One of the first guesthouses to open in the Rosebank Region some 19 years ago, Liz at Lancaster has built a strong reputation based on excellent personal service, great comfort, convenient location, seclusion and privacy. Given recognition for this in 2011 with an AA Accommodation Award for ‘People who go the extra mile’, an AA Accommodation in 2012 for 'Traveller's best value', Liz at Lancaster was also voted a finalist three years in a row in the AA 2010, 2011 & 2012 Accommodation Awards. We are included in Greenwood Guides Handpicked Accommodation. But perhaps most telling of all are our guest comments: ‘We loved the peace and privacy – we didn’t even know there were other guests here.’ ‘Craighall Park is such a central location – under 10 minutes from Rosebank and Melrose Arch and less than 15 minutes to Sandton Central. Even Parktown and Joburg Central are easily accessible – it took us 12 minutes to Wits.’ ‘Superb service and such comfortable spacious rooms’. ‘The on-site transport was a real added bonus.’ ‘Your Joburg information booklet in our room was amazingly helpful and useful.’ It is a mere 12 minute ride from O.R Tambio International Airport to the Rosebank Gautrain Station which is only 3.5 km from Liz at Lancaster. You can either pick up your rental car when you arrive at the station, or phone us for a transfer – a real added convenience. With 7 very private individual units all with separate entrances and kitchenettes offering self-catering options, Liz at Lancaster is ideal for long stays whether for business travelers or for those relocating. Rates drop for weekly and monthly stays. There are 2 standard spacious double rooms (25 & 30 m²), 3 studio flatlets (55 m²), and 2 one-bedroom cottages (80 m²) each with separate living/dining room and open plan kitchen. All lead onto their own enclosed courtyards where you can enjoy your privacy on a warm Highveld summer evening while sipping at a sundowner from your mini-bar. During our chilly Jozi winter months you will be warmly snug with under-carpet heating and electric blankets. All units have shower and bath, ample well-lit work areas/dining tables, separate sitting area, broadband WiFi connection, flat screen TVs and DSTV with own decoders (25 channels), overhead fans, convenient luxuries like hairdryers, toweling gowns, radio clock alarms, luxurious cotton percale linen, a house branded range of natural toiletries and on-the-house E-spring filtered water. Delicious breakfasts are served to order on the breakfast patio which opens out onto the garden in summer and is warmed by a roaring log fire in winter. There is ample secure off-street undercover parking. We offer a same day laundry service and on-site transport at very reasonable rates. All credit cards including Diners and American Express are accepted. Liz and two staff live on site and are always at the other end of the internal intercoms. As Liz taught Art History and Heritage at Wits University for 25 years, she keeps abreast with cultural events and has quite an extensive library. A further bonus of staying at Liz at Lancaster is the convenience of the neighbourhood shops at the end of the block: a 7-7 grocery store, a chemist, restaurant, etc.

Thank you EugenieDrakes2016 for your wonderful feedback. It means a lot to us to know that your friends and colleagues have been so impressed with their stays here. And yes the garden is a little oasis, particularly at the moment with lush green lawn and flowerbeds after the wonderful rain. Also lots of birds at the bird tray. And of course having convenience stores and an excellent restaurant within walking distance at the end of the block makes it so easy for guests to wander down for a meal or to bring something "home" to have in their private courtyard outside their room. We look forward to hosting many more of your colleagues and friends and giving them an insider's view of Jozi From us all at Liz at Lancaster: Liz. Mr. T, Catherine and Thandie

Thank you so much Nybergeva. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that you found it comfortable, convenient with good service. We love it when people enjoy Johannesburg and make the most of all it has to offer - good restaurants, a melting pot of cultures and a fascinating if not fraught history. Although I know you tend to spend time in the Cape, we hope that you will come back our way again. All the best and thank you again from us all at Liz at Lancaster: Liz, Mr T, Catherine and Thandie

Dear Marion-Trutru, I am so sorry there has been such a delay in replying to your review. In my head I had responded but have just seen that it was only "in my head"! It was very good to meet you all and I am just so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and made the most of your private courtyards and the garden. It is indeed a little oasis in the fast-paced city of Joburg. And best of all that we managed to get the Ipad to you in time before you left South Africa. IT all worked out. All the best and thank you again from us all at Liz at Lancaster: Liz. MR T, Catherine and Thandie

I stayed here for three nights after a long flight from the U.S. This self-catering accommodation, with breakfast included, was perfect for me for numerous reasons. The walls, gates, gardens, landscaping and bird feeders created a virtual and secure forest retreat not far from

Thank you Drfunhog for your detailed review of your stay here. I am just pleased that it all worked out so well and that we got it together to give you such a good birding experience. I really enjoyed meeting you and am delighted that we exceeded expectations. I am always a little worried about managing expectations but we seem to do so fairly successfully! How did the rest of your trip go? I hope you saw lots of birds and of course other wild life. I hope too you might return to South Africa and that you will come back and stay. All the best from us all at Liz at Lancaster: Liz, Mr T, Catherine and Thandie

We so loved welcoming you back again aroundtheworldin2013. Over the decades we have built up such wonderful connections and you are one of these special connections. And we're so please that the central location works so well for you and yes, there is loads of information and personal recommendations in the information booklet! We really enjoyed meeting your colleagues, albeit that their visits were very brief. So thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write such a detailed review and also for coming to stay again. I really hope it's not too long before you come back again. Hi Carrie, Unfortunately I only have one room left from 31st to 3rd April - the blue room (R800 single and R950 double). The best would be to go to my TripAdvisor listing and see my email and web address ( I pay for a business listing so there is no reason why you cannot contact me directly). From the 5th April I have plenty of space but that is probably no good for you? Best Liz Liz

Dear Terry, Good to hear from you again. No don't go through a travel website -the best is to contact me directly. Google Liz at Lancaster Guesthouse Johannesburg and my website comes up and you can contact me through this. Best Liz

Dear Terry, Thanks so much for your enquiry. We are between 26 and 39 km from the airport (depending on which route you go). We are in the northwest 'parks' area of the city whereas the airport is on the east of the city in a light industrial area. If you go onto our website and check the map and directions tab you can see more on the layout of the city and our location. Zac who works at Liz at Lancaster is a registered transport provider and does airport collections (R420 for the trip). If by any chance he cannot do I have other regular drivers who stand in for him. I look forward to hearing from you and hope you will come and stay. Best Liz
