Stayed here for 2 night. Very warm welcome by Thabani who assisted us inside with bags and took them to our room for us once we were checked in. Then when we went to reception to ask for directions to the shopping mall, he came and personally escorted us on the 3 minute walk walk (short cut). Suite was extremely spacious with lovely, period style decor. Bathroom with power jet shower, free standing bath tub, enclosed toilet, large sink. Lovely shower gel, handwash and lotions. Bedroom - kingsize bed, bedside stands, vanity table, television wardrobe with inside lights, safe etc. Then there was a large living area with another TV, dining table, mini bar area, sofa and separate chair. And then another toilet and sink. Beautiful, heavy drape curtains in both bedroom and living area. Much more space than we needed.Complimentary fruit both days. Mostly seemed clean but the doors and skirting boards were either very dirty around the trimings or very dated. Not a lot of rooms in the hotel and very quiet. Breakfast was served in a lovely room, very grand style with us being waited on for hot meal and a beautifully laid out continental section. The food itself though wasn’t great. Orange juice was a juice drink as to opposed to proper juice. Bacon in hot breakfast was very tough, sausage was very bland and hash brown oily. On 2nd morning breakfast was served in a private room set out with a long table. As there was only us and 1 other couple it had an intimate feel. I ordered an omelette which was better than the breakfast the day before. Thulani, Michael and Thomas who waited on us at breakfast were great. Friendly, welcoming and doing their best to ensure we had what was needed. There is a shopping mall with lots of shops, restaurants etc. and the African market a 3 min walk from hotel. The red bus (if you’re using it for site seeing) is a 3 min walk around the corner.

We stayed 3 nights at the Monarch Hotel as our base to tour Johannesburg and environs. The hotel was 5 star. The rooms were luxurious, spacious and comfortable, and the service was outstanding. The Rosebank Mall is just steps away for shopping and dining. Did I mention the great service?

We stayed for two nights at this extraordinary lodging, and though I try to avoid “perfect” when describing a property, it would be a disservice to not use that adjective here. That’s because we experienced perfection in our gorgeous Royal Suite and the service provided throughout the hotel. Its location by the Rosebank Mall and a Gautrain stop, with easy and fairly quick access to OR Tambo International Airport, offers additional pluses. Our massive suite featured an impeccably decorated living room in an earlier-era style with dining area. The decor matches the design theme throughout the heritage landmark. Much seating beckoned to us to sit or to sprawl beneath the high ceiling. Modern amenities included superb lighting; fast, reliable Wi-Fi; a big flatscreen TV; and an excellent heating/cooling system. A big separate bedroom included a large, extremely comfortable bed with fine linens; an entire wall devoted to storage; and a flatscreen TV. I loved going barefoot in the adjacent stylish bathroom (there is also a powder room just inside the suite entrance) because of the underfloor heating. An unusual curved tub and a large walk-in shower with many sprayers flank the room with a separate closet provided for the toilet. A lovely high-walled private terrace stretches by the suite with trees and seating. After we checked out, we received a feedback form online from the Monarch. One of the areas requested the names of those, who provided exemplary service. It likely looked liked a cop out when I responded “everyone,” but that is how we feel. A few examples include the man, who walked with us to the Rosebank Mall to give us an overview of the massive complex; a woman from Housekeeping, who discovered a vest hanging in the shower to dry and with our permission put it in the hotel’s dryer at no charge; and all, who make up the incredible staff in the gorgeous dining room and serve at the Reception desk. Everyone is extremely customer focused. We especially appreciated the kindness of staff toward my husband, who had mobility difficulties after taking a fall shortly before we left the United States for Africa. That fall meant we could not do our usual independent travel with public transport. The hotel arranged a transfer from and to the international airport for us and a car and driver to take us to places we wanted to visit in the area. The prices were competitive with costs I found online. Though the mall offers a variety of good restaurants, we ate two breakfasts and a dinner at the Monarch. The food proved to be good (not always the case at hotels) and the service, faultless. For those who like modern, sterile accommodations, the Monarch would likely not appeal. But we could not have been happier with the intimacy of this 12-suite hotel, which offers a traditional atmosphere and truly amazing service.

The hotel is nice and quiet. The stay was comfortable and relaxing. The hotel organized us a private Soweto tour which was really great. The staff gave us good tips for everything. They were extraordinary helpful and friendly. So far it would have been 5 stars. Minus was that we had to wait for our airport shuttle 25 minutes from our appointed time. Besides that the hotel would have received 5 stars.

This hotel is a real gem and I can see why this is one of the top rated hotels in JHB and I’m so glad we chose to stay here. Everything was superb. Can’t fault one thing. The breakfast was to die for, the service was first class and the room was so big and bed was super comfy.
