A host can make or break any stay and Ian definitely makes it. Not only does he make your stay as comfortable and simple as possible you leave wanting to call the place home. Ian is a fab cook and you can participate in communal life as much ss you please.

Me and my girlfriend spended 3 nights at the birches backpackers. The rooms and the toilets are very clean and nice. There r alot of beautiful sitting areas inside and outside the house so u can choose if u want to sit with other travlers or just take some quiet time in a lonely spot. Ian, the owner is very... We stayed at the birches backpackers in June and were very happy throughout our stay. We stayed in a double room with communal bathroom which was clean and spacious. The hostel was easy to find and had secure parking. Breakfast was good- homemade bread each morning, jam, spreads, yogurts, filter coffee and fruit. 5 very friendly and cute cats! An... More

With one exception, this is without a doubt the single best backpacker's hostel in South Africa (and indeed, one of the best I've stayed in worldwide). Ian, the owner, is terrific. He goes way above and beyond to ensure his guests have a wonderful stay (he even cooked me a perfect medium rare steak that I bought from the supermarket).... More

Ian was more than helpful with any information needed. His place is really nice, calm neighborhood, and he goes the extra mile to make you feel at home! Would definately recommend this place to all travelers.

The place was nice and comfortable and the owners were very very friendly. The room was good although the wooden floor was a bit creaky which is normal. It is situated in a safe and serene environment.

This is probably one of the nicest hostels I've had the pleasure of staying at. Ian is very friendly and extremely helpful, and really pulls out all the stops to make sure that his guests have a safe and enjoyable trip to Johannesburg. The dorm room was clean and comfortable and the wifi was fast! I didn't get the chance... More

We enjoyed our stay here. Ian, the owner and manager, was very involved and accomodating. We couldn't use our Uber anymore due to creditcard problems but we could call him while he was asleep he assured and he got cabs for us. The hostel is quite proximate to Melville, which is a nice area to eat and drink, and the... More

Hi Carlo, I really enjoyed your stay at my hostel. I try to make everyone's stay here enjoyable and memorable of Joburg. My intention is that everyone walks into the hostel to friendliness and homeliness. Of course drugs don't fit into that at all. Wishing you well! Ian More

I needed to wait for three days in Johannesburg for my camping tour to start. I'm so glad I booked with Ian. This is more of a bed and breakfast than a hotel. Ian organized an Uber driver for me from the airport. His maid, Jeanette, also took me shopping twice when I was nervous about taking the shared taxis.... More
