My wife and I stayed here for one night and were blown away by the friendliness of the staff, the luxurious accommodation, excellent food and unique atmosphere at this historic house - it felt like we briefly were swept into a Victorian story, treated to the splendour of fine dining and a luxurious lifestyle, while not lacking in any comforts... This establishment is a cut above the rest in Port Elizabeth. The room I was in was a bit noisy with the wine pairing that went on immediately below it until the guests left. Next time I would like to have a room at another end of the establishment please.

We stayed here for just one night as a stop over before our flight from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg. It was comfortable and peaceful - it was also like stepping back into time with a quaint garden and a very distinctive old English Victorian feel to the place. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. In our room (Lady Elizabeth)... More

We ordered room service and the good exceeded expectations - it was so good!! We had a beautiful breakfast the following morning and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We were sorry to leave. I always stay here when in Port Elizabeth. This establishment is beautiful. The gardens are well manicured, the dinning area is beautifully furnished and the rooms very spacious and comfortable. The staff are friendly and well groomed. The kitchen however, is a little slow and so one waits a little too long for food. That said, I highly recommend this... More

I loved it, I enjoyed the olde worldly feeling having spent time in hotels so modern and souless this felt like an old freind embracing you. My bedroom was huge I could fit my London flat into it we also had... More

Hacklewood is beautifully elegant. With large bedrooms and bathrooms exquisitely decorated. We always love to dine here when we're in town too...it's a must. Centrally located in the leafy suburb of Walmer, it's like staying with old family-just better!

A very quaint little place - nice to unwind and relax. Not very glamorous and possibly in need of a facelift - the decor is soothing and unobtrusive. Its like a home away from home. The bedrooms are lovely with bits and pieces which o found very interesting. The food is good and the service is fair

Recently stayed at the Hacklewood Hill House and really enjoyed our stay. It's a quaint house with large rooms and bathrooms, great location to explore the area. Very secure and amazing breakfast! Highly recommended the Healthy Choice breakfast. Amazing staff who bend over backwards to help. 15 minute drive to the airport, making it a great stay if leaving it... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1898, and nestled in a lush English garden setting in the leafy suburb of Walmer, Hacklewood Hill is one of the few remaining Victorian Manor Houses in the city, and as such retains much of the elegance and grace it would have boasted when its first inhabitants – a young doctor and his family – once lived here. Guests are greeted with intricately stained glass doors, gleaming wooden floors and the gentle sheen of wooden banisters lovingly buffed and polished for more than a century. Wandering around the house’s two reception rooms, your eye naturally gravitates from one fascinating period piece to another. A black and white checkerboard tiled veranda overlooks a sparkling swimming pool, perfect for leisurely dips on hot summer days – while the well-established garden beckons for a quiet stroll or perhaps even a civilised game of croquet on the lawn. The more energetic can opt for a gentlemanly game of tennis or just choose a secluded spot in the garden to enjoy the abundant birdlife which calls the grounds of Hacklewood home. The manor house’s eight luxury en suite rooms which are equally as enticing, especially as each so perfectly captures the essence of the Victorian Age. Each is individually decorated in palettes ranging from pastel blues and rose bedecked pinks to more masculine browns and reds. As a result, each room has its own unique character and returning guests will enjoy experiencing them all, and will, no doubt, be loath to pick a favourite at the end. In order to truly experience Hacklewood Hill at the height of its stately Victorian glory, guests need to make a point of opting for at least one dinner at the house’s five star restaurant. The dining room’s magnificent chandelier lights, to full perfection the cut glass, crystal goblets, starched linen and full silver service on the tables below, while superbly trained waiters serve a splendid array of cordon bleu dishes that emanate from the kitchen. Little wonder that the restaurant has garnered itself a slew of fine dining awards and has become a firm favourite on the Port Elizabeth dining scene – not only for its exquisite dinners, but also full English breakfasts, High Tea's and light lunches. For a thoroughly enjoyable trip back to a time when days were long and unhurried, furnishings were beautiful and handmade, and every meal was an occasion to use only the best china and silverware, guests need look no further than Hacklewood Hill Country House. ... more   less
