Volker and Claudia have done a great job on this farm, building basic rooms in pleasant gardens. The decor is very eco-friendly, including using truckloads of bottles (they used to run a restaurant) to make stained glass windows and other windows including in the rooms and communal bathrooms. There is a small kitchen with basic equipment which is good for... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our farm and country venue is on top of a small hill in the beautiful Manley Flats valley just 20 km from Grahamstown, the cultural Mecca of South Africa. We have lived here for more than 10 years and eco-art, using glass bottles and various other materials, and the priapic garden have become the characteristic features of our garden and venue. The Phall s art exhibition premiered at the National Arts Festival 2012 and is now a permanent gallery at Burg Lengeling. We are surrounded by a game farm and other agricultural lands and on our farm we keep a group of zebras and some buck. The grassland with acacia, aloe, euphorbia, trees, shrubs and herbs slopes down to dense riverside thickets. Wild animals living in this area, besides the ones that we keep, are small buck, bush pigs, jackals, caracals, genet cats, porcupines, baboons, small monkeys, huge land tortoises, iguanas and other reptiles, and a vast variety of birds ranging from the African fish eagle to minute sun birds, not to forget the arthropods – the quiet observer might just be lucky to spot several species of them. The area around Grahamstown is one of the most diverse ecological regions in South Africa. Four different climate zones meet here and it is not unusual to have ‘four climates in a day’: the Karoo desert, the sub tropical coastal belt, the Western Cape winter rainfall and the inland summer rainfall zones. Many nature reserves and game parks are nearby and offer game watching, hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities. Driving on the small secondary roads which very often border the many game reserves is locally known as ‘the poor man’s game drive’ and often even giraffes, rhinos and other big wild animals can be seen from the road. Grahamstown is an extraordinary charming small university town and Africa’s festival capital. History, culture and art distinguish Grahamstown with its many historic buildings, museums and the National Arts Festival.Half-way between Cape Town and Burg Lengeling is just right to stop over or to stay on for a few days and conveniently explore the nature, wildlife and culture of Frontier Country, Addo Area and Sunshine Coast. Our buildings are on top of a small hill allowing stunning views of nature and sky in all directions. The down-to-earth cottages are each furnished in different themes: romantic, afro-kitsch or colonial and set within the priapic garden. The 'Out-in-Africa' cottage is a family room – however please consider that we are not particularly suitable for kids. ... more   less
