I recently spent two nights at the Totem with my two kids. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The only problems I had was with the lady running the breakfast buffet. She was rude and talked down to me and my kids. She told my daughter she was too young to drink coffee and that the coffee was saved for the adults. She scolded multiple people for not using the hand sanitizer, even though I saw her coughing and hacking without washing or sanitizing. When you are paying almost $300 a night, you do not want to be harassed during breakfast.

Pro: easy parking, ice machines, good location, nice rooms. Daughter liked the pool although small.

Cons: breakfast buffet to include the cooked food was not good (eggs either over/undercooked and lacking flavor, sausage was meh) and the service was lacking. They had a hard time keeping the buffet stocked and staff didn’t seem to really care. You have to ask them to fill up the very empty buffet if you want to get something. Oh and they do not know how to make coffee! It was so bad we had to get coffee elsewhere this from someone who just drinks simple coffee from home. This coffee was not prepared correctly on either day we were there (same with the food).

Also not sure why rooms weren’t cleaned on a daily basis. There wasn’t even a notice that there wasn’t daily room cleaning which is odd. I don’t mind a room not being cleaned but a sign shouldn’t be posted so one knows. When you expect the towels to be taken care of and coffee to be replaced and it isn’t, it’s kind of a strange thing for a hotel at $300 a night if you ask me.

Thank you for the review. I have spoken with the kitchen staff and made some adjustments. Currently, we are only doing service for longer-term stays but for any guests that request service we do provide it.

Talking to various people and reading reviews, if you ever find yourself in Valdez, this is definitely THE best place to stay by far. It is expensive but don’t expect whistles and bells! It is just a normal hotel. The guy on reception was quite cold and unwelcoming and not very helpful when we checked in, don’t know wether he was having a bad day, later he actually did help us with something, maybe he had had a coffee by then! There was an older lady on reception in the evening and she was lovely, Alaskan friendly, very helpful and lovely to chat to. Our room was extremely large with the most wonderful, comfortable king size bed and pillows, bathroom was equally large and had a decent shower, all nice, modern furnishings, the only thing that was utter rubbish was the wardrobe, I actually could not find it at first which shows you just how small it was, I have never seen such a tiny wardrobe in such a huge room, and only 4 plastic hangers inside! No ironing board or iron although you can ask at reception (obviously could not fit these into the tiny wardrobe). Breakfast room in the morning felt a bit cold and the variety of food for the price of the hotel was not brilliant although they had everything you could want. Good for an overnight stay, unfortunately we had 2 nights in Valdez which was one night too much in an extortionately expensive town with terrible restaurants.

For the price, totaling about $275 a night, the room was not clean and the staff was rude. It was very obvious that the toilet in the first room they gave me had not been cleaned even through the rest of the room was clean. The second room seemed clean but once we were in there for awhile, we noticed little things - little pieces of tissue or toilet paper on the floor in the bathroom and countertop was only superficially wiped off. What was more bothersome than that was the staff. I mentioned all this in the nicest way I could but the attitude I received implied that I was the problem. It would have been easy to be friendly about it but that didn’t happen. I cannot recommend this hotel.

The Totem is fairly new. It seems to have most amenities. Mostly comfortable. They should really start the breakfast early enough so passengers on the Alaska Ferry can take advantage of something obviously incorporated into the room rate. This isn't a very good value - somewhat overpriced.

If you are visiting Valdez for recreation, pleasure, or business I don't think there's a better place to stay than the Totem. I stayed in one of the cabins. Nicely furnished, good quality television and a very functional kitchen. One of my co- Travelers suffered a minor injury during the day. He was quickly stitched up at the Providence Hospital in Valdez and sent on his way) despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked that night the staff accommodated him in a wheelchair accessible room. The swimming pool and workout room we're also very nice, well-maintained and clean.

We prefer to travel staying at VRBOs, so we can have a kitchen and laundry facilities; that isn't always possible, but we were very pleased to find the Chugach Suites at Totem Inn for this purpose. It was just what we needed.

Couple this with the great breakfast in the morning, the closeness of the harbor and yummy eateries, and the many ways the staff went above and beyond for us (extra bedding for when our tween didn't want to bunk with her sibling, working with us when we needed to extend our stay unexpectedly, etc), and we just couldn't be happier. Valdez was one of our very favorites on our trip, and Totem Inn was a big part of that. Many thanks!

My understanding is that this hotel has been rebuilt in the past couple of years. I really like what they did but acknowledge that some of that is the "newness" of the hotel. We had a standard room with a king size bed. The bed was really comfortable and everything was clean and well maintained.

A breakfast if also included and its pretty hardy. There were scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon/sausage, potatoes (this was a roasted blend of onions & regular/sweet potatoes...very good). There was also orange juice and apple juice.

The Totem hotel is a modern boxy multistory hotel about two blocks from the waterfront- so easy walking to multiple restaurants and activities. Keys were available to everyone on the tour, except us, when we arrived. That situation was eventually resolved. The large attractive lobby had the front desk. seating, gift shop and a breakfast area. The house has a small pool, unlike everywhere else we stay during our tour. Our eventual room was large with a double queen and medium sized bathroom. Everything was clean and operational. The decor was monochrome, with contemporary furnishings, no art, a refer, microwave, no safe, and acceptable in-room coffee ( three in a row). Very good printed guest information. The complementary internet worked well. The medium sized flatscreen tv had lots of channels and a useful guide. Good bed, linens and pillows. Good towels and toiletries. Good lighting and lots of outlets. The complementary breakfast does not start serving until 6:00 am, stacking up multiple tours creating substantial lines. The breakfast was average quality and variety, at best. An average 3 star house, in value and delivery- ok for one night.

This hotel looks new, and has a very striking and attractive interior. The lobby, breakfast room, and hotel rooms are pretty, and our room was very comfortable. The blackout drapes had some gap, but not a big deal. The daily hot breakfast was varied, and staff worked to keep it supplied. The hotel is not located immediately in the Valdez harbor but only one or two streets away. Although we drove there due to rain, you could easily walk going out the back of the property as well. The front desk staff probably could work on being more consistently friendly and helpful. Some were good; others..... We'd stay again when we're in the area.

Hello, As far as I know there are no hotels that have a pool here in Valdez. As far as Jacuzzis, I know the Totem Inn does not. If you are looking to get more questions answered the front desk number is (907835-4443. There is a friendly front desk attendant wait to answer any questions you might have. Hope this helps, Jerid

Hi Cheryl, Thank you for your inquiry. Because of our full service restaurant with a "legendary breakfast" we do not package inclusive rates. We would love to have you join us both for a great nights rest and possibly one of our famous crab omelets.

Our cancellation policy is 24 hours or 1 day and I apologize for the confusion. I need to update this on the Trip Advisor site, thank you for the reminder and hope to see you this summer. Mark Spring, GM
