We prefer to travel staying at VRBOs, so we can have a kitchen and laundry facilities; that isn't always possible, but we were very pleased to find the Chugach Suites at Totem Inn for this purpose. It was just what we needed. Couple this with the great breakfast in the morning, the closeness of the harbor and yummy eateries, and the many ways the staff went above and beyond for us (extra bedding for when our tween didn't want to bunk with her sibling, working with us when we needed to extend our stay unexpectedly, etc), and we just couldn't be happier. Valdez was one of our very favorites on our trip, and Totem Inn was a big part of that. Many thanks!

Clean friendly hotel, with good sized hotel rooms located right next to the harbor. Easy walking distances to shops and restaurants. There are not a lot of choices for hotels in Valdez and this is the best for sure. I would book well in advance as rooms sell out, especially in the summer

We stayed here for two nights on our recent visit to Valdez. The rooms were clean and wifi worked reasonably well. The included breakfast was okay but nothing special. The hotel was well-located making it to easy to walk to restaurants and things in Valdez. There was also ample parking.

We stayed for 4 nights. The room was large, with an armchair, a desk, a TV, and plenty of space to move around. There was also a microwave, which we found very useful. The staff were friendly and helpful. There’s free tea/coffee in the lobby (self service) open all day, which is great. Would be better if the cups and spoons weren’t disposable though. Breakfast wasn’t very good - the only downside in our opinion.

The hotel is comfortable and in a good location for walking to the harbor. The room was a nice size with a good shower. Be sure to ask for a room away from dogs. There were dogs in the room next to us that barked late at night and again early in the morning. Talking to the front desk, they could have cared less.

This hotel looks new, and has a very striking and attractive interior. The lobby, breakfast room, and hotel rooms are pretty, and our room was very comfortable. The blackout drapes had some gap, but not a big deal. The daily hot breakfast was varied, and staff worked to keep it supplied. The hotel is not located immediately in the Valdez harbor but only one or two streets away. Although we drove there due to rain, you could easily walk going out the back of the property as well. The front desk staff probably could work on being more consistently friendly and helpful. Some were good; others..... We'd stay again when we're in the area.

This hotel is renovated and has a great location, walking distance from food and activity. Rooms are big , showers are clean and has a lot of room. Breakfast is included and you have 24/7 front desk attendant. We even saw a bear just wondering around across the street from the hotel.

The Totem has a lot going for it. It’s new and in a great location. The rooms are very generous in size and were clean and comfortable. The biggest negative came from staff interactions. The woman at check in and the young man working the desk at night were helpful and friendly. However, the one gentleman working breakfast and another working the front desk in the evening both got a bit snippy and short. Neither seemed very interested in their job. It’s probably the nicest place in Valdez, but our interactions with staff somewhat diluted our positive experience.

The Totem is fairly new. It seems to have most amenities. Mostly comfortable. They should really start the breakfast early enough so passengers on the Alaska Ferry can take advantage of something obviously incorporated into the room rate. This isn't a very good value - somewhat overpriced.

This hotel was selected for us through the package we booked. The hotel itself was new, clean, and basic, absolutely no bells and whistles other than it's probably the nicest hotel in town and a great location. While the front desk staff was efficient, I felt they lacked empathy which you really need in customer service especially now. I get you're understaffed and I get guests are probably at times quite hostile. That would and has worn me down too. However I had an issue that I politely addressed. The answer I was given was no, why it was no, and a lot of I'm sorrys as they saw I was ready to burst into tears. I then gave them an example of why the situation concerned me and I received a very snarky comment from one of the employees. If he had just met my comment with empathy and toned his comment differently it would have ended much better and I wouldn't have been upset for the next 2 hours. I don't ask much. Just show empathy. The next evening I tried to make nice with one of the front desk staff and my husband said she clearly wanted nothing to do with me. I'm not sure how true that was but if he noticed that then there's some reality to it. I have worked in customer facing jobs for a lot of my career and little empathy goes a long way even with some of the nastiest of customers.
