A few days before our arrival I saw a really bad review here. I didn’t think of it much because normally when you have lots of great reviews and one bad review it only means someone is too picky. Turned out, they were right. So I’m going to write a lengthy review so that travellers can make an informed decision when booking this hotel. The rooms. I was utterly disappointed when I was shown to my sea view room. The double bed was 2 beds that we were supposed to move next to each other (they weren’t upon our arrival) and for some unknown reason (we never said 3 people were coming!) an ugly smaller wooden bed with chipped sides was placed next to the window taking whatever was left of the room space. The pillows felt like they were filled with straw. Fortunately, the friendly stuff agreed to give us another room with a sea front view which had a nice king size bad, nicer pillows but still an ugly side bed that was removed upon request. We were told at the reception that they do have renovated rooms that also have bathrobes and slippers (as advertised in pictures) but they only give those rooms to guests that pay directly to the hotel and not to those who book with agencies. Same applies to bathroom toiletries - no shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, cotton makeup pads or shower cap. We had to buy those in the hotel pharmacy. Just a soap dispenser in the bathroom. To be fair, room cleaning was diligent, didn’t see any mould. The food. We were ok to settle with 3* rooms and had high hopes for a 5* dinner. I’ll just say that one might expect to gain some weight with all-inclusive meals but that was not the case with this hotel. Having tried a few dishes I prepared to survive the week on watermelon and bread. However, they didn’t serve watermelon every day so I had to get creative. Lunch and dinner at the main restaurant (I will call it a canteen for lack of a better word) usually had 2 hot meat dishes and one hot fish dish, pasta and noodles and 1 grill option. Sides options were rice and potatoes. And then you could choose from 3-5 versions of cucumber-tomato-green leaf-coriander/dill salads and sandwiches, lots of different breads and desserts. I would fill my plate with salads and some meat if I was lucky. All meat and fish dished were overcooked, over salted or under salted. I really cannot comprehend all the praise for food you find in this hotel reviews. Seeing Italian families emptying their plates with over salted lasagna was beyond me. I don’t know how anyone who ever went out for a meal in an average cafe could appreciate the meals we were served daily. We ended up having lunch at the beach canteen which they say serves ‘fast food’. It was indeed fast - they put an overcooked cofta or chicken in a bun and that’s it. Get some cucumbers and tomatoes, french fries and ketchup, your lunch is served. Some days I was lucky with soup when it wasn’t under or over seasoned. Bottom line, the food is disastrous. The lunch we had in Luxor that was included in the price of the day trip was a million times better than any of the ‘chef specials’ in the hotel canteen. Make sure you go to Marsa Alam to get the real taste of Egyptian food. A few words about the La Luna ‘restaurant’ - don’t go. It’s same food as in main canteen but with even more limited options. To conclude, the food that was edible: grilled cofta/chicken on rare occasions, mashed potato, cucumbers and tomatoes, feta, olives, french fries, soups if you’re lucky, breads, apples, grapes, melon, watermelon, desserts. I skipped breakfasts to be very hungry for lunch to be able to eat the food. The Reef. That would be the only explanation for 5* awarded to this hotel. You can access 3 different reefs, one closer to Hilton (public beach where groups of snorkelers come from different areas), one accessed from the hotel sand beach and 1 reef you access from the hotel walkway. Follow the snorkelling groups in the morning to see the turtles, try different reefs at different times of the day to see all the fishes. 3 stingrays, 4 fire fishes and 2 murena are every day visitors to the reef. The biggest reef I’ve ever seen that basically is all that matters. The Activities. I guess they’re good for those with kids or those who get bored in the sea. I couldn’t care for any of them. Especially annoying was kids disco after dinner with very loud music and songs that repeat every single day. Baby shark and Macarena will be stuck with me for a few more weeks I’m sure. There’s daily show at 9:30 pm but they never start on time and you feel like you’re losing time waiting while you could have been having a gin&tonic and smoking shisha prepared by lovely Mohammed. The Fakir show was worth the wait though, that man is insane!! Quad riding was an experience, make sure to pop up by Mido and ask for Ahmed to be your guide. Diving is offered for those with 0 experience for 20 or 45 min. No prep needed, the less you know the better, Haitham took such a great care of us, basically holding your hand if you needed it. What they don’t tell you when you book is that you are not supposed to fly in the next 48 hours. The people who sell you this don’t seem to care much if you die on the plane but luckily the instructors are more caring and understand that this is a risk. So unfortunately we had to cancel our second diving session 24h before the flight. If we were warned earlier we would have booked it for an earlier date but it it what it is. Day trips. We booked a Luxor trip in the hotel and it was such an amazing experience. Even at +41. Definitely recommend. We got 3 drivers (it’s a 6 hour journey), one guide in Luxor and a meal. Staff. I only had positive experience with local staff. Learn a few basic phrases from them, show respect and you will have the Egyptian hospitality in return. Hotel staff is definitely overworked so I would encourage you to tip the cleaners, canteen and bar workers, they’re doing a great job and they do mostly earn from tips (which may seem surprising for europeans but in many many countries hospitality workers have very low hourly rate and make a living off tips). You can rent snorkelling gear from the diving centre but I had to change my mask/fins twice, they do not properly check if they’re in good condition and unless you’re in the sea you wouldn’t know. They have good prices for masks in the hotel shop if you have space in your luggage. The pharmacy staff is also incredible. Don’t just buy what you think you need, ask for advice. I thought I needed aloe vera for my sunburn - no way, they gave me a medicine and my sunburn was gone overnight, with aloe vera I know it’d take a week. Conclusion. This is a mediocre 3* hotel with terrible, terrible food. If you’re not planning to spend most of your day in the sea enjoying the magic of the coral reef or trying new outside of the hotel activities, look for some other place to stay. If you’ve chosen Marsa Alam for the reef and proximity to Luxor, that would be a good value for money and you will enjoy it. As for pictures, a lot of them should be removed as they do not represent the state of the hotel and food as of now. PS, They actually do have a nice looking modern restaurant building that was closed and they do have a 5* looking pool, only they ask 10 euros per person to access it, no wonder it was empty.…
