Nestled in a scenic location, the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge receives acclaim for its rustic appeal, particularly the cozy ambiance of its lobby with a grand fireplace. Guests have called out the establishment's cleanliness, though some feel that the lodge's value doesn't align with the pricing, especially in terms of room quality and dining options.
While the service can be a hit or miss, with reports of both friendliness and disorganization, many travelers are captivated by the stunning views and find the shuttle service convenient for exploring the surroundings. The rooms, however, garner mixed feedback due to dated decor and occasional cleanliness issues.

Arrived at this lovely place as part of our driving Alaska tour. Bit shocked when walked in as thought it was an old age home! Mind you we are probably the same age as most of the people there! Every available seat was taken with most people asleep and one sprawled on the sofa. They were waiting for train pick ups etc and as we were early we had to wait for our room so struggled to find a place to sit. Room was ready as soon as possible and we loved it here. Rocking chairs facing large windows. Talkeetna was a delight and great fun. Bit of a Wild West town. Hotel was comfortable with friendly staff and would highly recommend if you can avoid the cruise ship crowds.

The exterior is lovely; it reminded me of Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park. We had a large, well appointed room with a view of the mountains. Even though the weather was somewhat rainy, we enjoyed watching the small planes and the mountains outside that window. The rug was tasteful, and the metal “moose” wall hanging suited the rustic setting. There was a small “loveseat” sized couch and another lounge chair to sit in, as well as a desk with a small chair and mirror which also served as a vanity. No microwave, but the small refrigerator was very cold. Each side of the bed had a night table with outlets and lamps. We appreciated that there were both a luggage stand and a bench suitable for placing our suitcases on. The dresser with three drawers was good for storage. The front desk staff were friendly and responsive when we had to request a few items.
We had one dinner at the Foraker Restaurant which we enjoyed. The food was good and the service was prompt and friendly.
At this price point, a few things should be improved: housekeeping should be daily. If not, at least a couple of rolls of toilet paper and more than two tiny bottles of toiletries should be provided. These are easy fixes that would improve the guest‘s experience. Longer term, the sink area needs to be enlarged to add a counter/vanity with some storage. As it is now, there is no place in the sink area to hang wet wash cloths, place toothbrushes, etc. Also, the television was too small for the size of the room.
In summary, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property if you can swing the steep room rates. It’s only a few touches from perfection!

The lodge sits on an unbeatable location and is mere minutes from the two main flight seeing companies in Talkeetna, which was our primary reason for staying here. We have been on a road trip in Alaska and wanted a night out from the RV to stretch a bit. The lobby and deck are definitely the visual highlights of the lodge, although the iconic view of the mountain range was occluded by smoke/haze from wildfires during our visit. Our room (king Mountain View) was spacious with a comfortable bed. The furniture was a bit dated, but still I fair condition. The room aesthetic is pretty minimalistic. The breakfast buffet in the dining room was comparable to a mid range hotel, I wouldn’t say it’s worth the $26. But dinner at the Base Camp Bistro was the star of the show. Of note, the kitchen was a bit backed up the night we dined, but we enjoyed our drinks on the deck while waiting for our food. The reindeer bolognese and the halibut were both excellent. Staff was very friendly throughout.

Thank you for the review! I agree, the fires have made things a bit smoky, but fortunately it didn't linger too long this time. So happy to hear that you got to take advantage of our great viewing decks, wonderful drinks from the Base Camp Bar, good food and good company!

We are currently staying at the Lodge for 3 nights. Our room requests weren’t honored, and we were only given one key per room (with two members of our family staying in each room) but that wasn’t a big deal. This review is primarily for the restaurant, which boasts a beautiful view, but where we waited an hour and a half for our food, which, when it arrived, was described as “inedible halibut”, “nothing to write home about steak”, and “tasteless winter melon”. Upon receiving the check for the overpriced meal, we noticed a “remote fee”. We were told this was akin to a delivery fee. Why, might you ask, would we be charged a delivery fee for eating in a restaurant? Our server was unable to explain the charge and all I could find on a remote tax, which would seem to be inapplicable to our situation (ordering local fare, including halibut and scallops, in a location restaurant for local consumption was the following: “Roughly 50 Alaskan communities tax remote sales through the Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax.” Commission (ARSSTC).” It appears as though we were simply charged a bogus fee for subpar food after an incomprehensible wait. Even a beautiful view doesn’t compensate for that. We will not be returning.

Nice facility, great views, landscaping, trails, but the seasonal staff lacks motivation and the skills to go from good to great. For the price it should be closer to great. Some of the rooms are undesirable as they are prone to exposure from noisy guests and vehicles. No AC so your windows are open and the night crew cranks the tunes and when the bars close the drunks roll in. The deliveries are in nice and early so a full night's sleep is hard to come by. The desk staff is apathetic/unwelcoming and the wait staff is disorganized. Messed up our order several times. Typical Alaska summer pricing which is similar to Disneyworld. There are many options in the area so look around and if you choose the lodge definitely don't let them stick you above the front desk.

For a $400 a night room would have expected the room’s amenities to be of a higher quality. Items like hand soap were tiny. No shower caps. Toilet paper roll was almost out when arriving with new roll on back of toilet bowl for guest to change out. No writing materials or guides which assume were all on line. Cleaning cart outside my room at 9:00 having to navigate around it before 11:00 check out time. Washer and dryer were pay only. The overall experience seemed tacky since new management arrived. Don’t mind paying the price but except better accommodations.

First thing I noticed upon entering the room was a funky smell. Kind of like a sour stale smell. Luckily I always travel with a small can of air freshener which helped quite a bit but the smell was there every time we re-entered the room. Luckily, the floors were done in a wood laminate so no carpet was a plus. No a/c but there was a table fan provided. Bed was comfy. I went to shower the evening we arrived and no soap, no shampoo, nothing. I called housekeeping and got voice mail saying to call the front desk. So I called the front desk and asked if this was provided. About 20 minutes later someone did show up with a bag of soap and shampoo and conditioner and lotion. The actual Lodge might be nicer to stay in but we were assigned to some buildings across the parking lot and down a hill which made a soggy walk in the morning to get coffee at the coffee shop. They do have a nice viewing area off the back of the hotel. Hotel choices are limited in this area but if I were in this area again I would look for a different hotel.

Thank you for the review. I am sorry to hear about the funky smell. I hope that someone was called to come and fix the problem if it was something within our control. Sorry about the amenities. That is something that should have been checked prior to your arrival, but am happy to hear that one of our team members was able to bring you what you needed!

We enjoyed relaxing in front of the fabulous stone floor-to-high ceiling fireplace. The view of the Alaska Range was great to admire from the comfy rockers in the reception area. Remember to take your slippers as ice bugs or any other anti slip shoe is not allowed anyplace in the lodge. Wine pairing was memorable and a great end of the day treat! Outstanding wines were paired with delicious food.

Lets talk about the good first. The location is Gorgeous with spectacular views of the Alaskan Range. The outside patio and also central lounges in all buildings face the mountains so (weather permitting of course) you can get a great view no matter where you are. Grounds were well kept and for the most part the staff was competent if not overly efficient. The food (when you can get it, more on that later) was good but not really memorable.
Now lets talk about some things to be aware of. It's fairly a big property (no issue there) that clearly caters to the cruise traffic on land tours (this could be an issue). The big buses come and go all the time dropping of lots of people, Thus, depending on the day, it can get pretty crowded. Which of course impacts a lot of things, especially the 2 restaurants on property. We tried to go to the more "upscale" one and even though it was half empty with many tables available were told they were full that night and we couldn't eat there. So went to the other more casual one and was able to eat there. Service was harried and the workers seemed a bit frustrated. Must be understaffed is all we could figure out. Food was decent and the view nice. If you don't have a car, it will be hard to go to town at night and you'd be kinda stuck. Lastly the rooms are not of the quality you would expect. They're not bad, just rather small and of basically the equivalent of a Holiday Inn Express. No air conditioning either. This isn't an issue for 10 months of the year, but if you're here the other 2 months it's hard to sleep in the hot and if you open the window and are facing the parking lot, you get to hear the buses all the time. I guess they really can't do anything about the size of the rooms, but there are a number of other things that could be done to make the stay better.

Thank you for the review! I am pleased to hear that there were some highlights! In regards to the things that were not so perfect; We do offer a complimentary shuttle from 10am -6pm. While the Foraker restaurant may not have been full when you saw it, we do have large groups that book it in advance. We welcome independent reservations up to two weeks in advance. There is very little air conditioning in hotels, homes and business between Wasilla and Fairbanks. With over 3000 hotel rooms in that stretch, just over 200 rooms have air conditioning. Sadly, it is something we never used to need therefore, hotels were not build that way. We have begun a remodel process in our guest lodge rooms and our Bistro restaurant. We hope to continue with that momentum, but covid has put a halt to much of the forward progress we have been able to make. After a few years of financial hardship, we hope to continue. Thank you again for the honest review.

One of the better places we stayed on our 14 day trip but still overpriced. Although we had booked and paid a mountainview room - view over the Denali mountain range -we were given a room at the bottom end with view over the trees. It took us at least a 30 minute discussion with the reception staff before we were shown into a room with the view we paid for. Acceptable food in the restaurant and at breakfast, somewhat better than elsewhere but still no pleasure at all but at least your stomach gets filled.

We were told there was no other transportation available. No taxis, ubers or lyfts. So when we accidentally missed our shuttle, we had to call the hotel and they came back and picked us up.
Hello, we typically do not allow any animals however in an attempt to help Alaskan get out and travel this year we have altered our pet policy. Guests may bring up to 2 small pets for a cleaning fee of $35 dollars per pet per night.
There are more places to choose from in the Talkeetna area.
