I knew travel into Yap was still complicated owing to United Airline schedule adjustments. The Inn staff explained the option for -and helped me purchase and confirm- a flight from PALAU, through a quaint and earnest missionary airline called "PMA" when flights from Guam were irregular.
Really beautiful setting, with wonderful memorabilia and knowledgeable staff.
Staff service is excellent, as taxi is limited on saturday afternoon, we were driven. I was also driven to my series of meeting.
As the place is quiet, one can hold a meeting in the patio near the bay. The bed is comfortable, I slept well
1. Location. O'Keefe's is right next door to Manta Ray Bay. MRB has a great dive shop, but the hotel is loud. There is a big, unattractive three-storey ship that sits right in front of the hotel (I presume blocking all the room's views) and this boat houses two floors for dining and a third floor for the bar. The bar is outside and is loud. They do have a very nice pool area (O'Keefe's does not have a pool) but if you dive with them, you are allowed to use their pool. O'Keefe's gives you next-door access to MRB, but without the loud party atmosphere and ugly boat. If you like a party atmosphere, you will probably prefer MRB. It's not like a college drunk fest - most divers are in their 30's and above, but the bar plays loud music and has a HUGE movie screen on the top floor of the boat. I personally prefer a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.
2. Don Evans. The owner, Don Evans, is the epitome of congenial host, and the most interesting person you'll meet on the island. Don went to Yap in the 70's, working for the US Dept of the Interior. He found paradise and stayed. He has lived in the traditional Yap Men's Houses and can tell you about that, survived his first 18 years when Yap had no electricity (they only got their first ATM two years ago!) and can tell you all the fascinating facts about the island and the culture. He is intimately aware of the Yapese culture, how the caste system there works, etc. All the Yapese people know him and love him, and you will too.
3. Decor. O'Keefes is a colonial-style hotel - much like a Bed & Breakfast style - with great decor. Dark wood floors, balconies that literally hang OVER the water, so you can hear the water lapping underneath your deck, and wall decor about General O'Keefe (a major figure in Yap history) and such. It's very cozy and makes you want to pull out a book, put your feet up and read. The rooms are small, but do have enough room for your things. We didn't notice this until our last day, but every deck has a little closet that has a warm-air dryer going to dry your scuba gear! They also have a long fresh-water hose for scuba cleaning. If you dive with MRB next door, you will leave all your gear over there every night, though, so this is most useful on your last day when you need to pack your gear up for the plane. NOTE: We chose a corner room (Rooms are in a row on the water, and rooms #1 and #5 are on the ends.) The window still only looked directly out, but the deck looked both out and to the side. However, Colonia has some warehouses on their waterfront, which you can see from either corner room. I think (but am not 100% sure) that if you pick rooms 2-4, you can avoid looking at the warehouses.
4. Tumog. Don knows Tumog, who will give you an amazing land-tour. DON'T leave Yap without Tumog showing you his village's Men's House. Since you can't dive for 24 hours before your flight, and flights don't leave until the middle of the morning, this is the perfect activity for your last day. It's a half day tour, and he can show you everything from Yapese cultural locations, WWII downed planes (he got a medal for finding the most planes!) and the most scenic spots on the island.
5. Oasis. Oasis is, hands down, the best restaurant on the island. Not that others are bad, but Oasis is soooo good. It's either owned by O'Keefe's or affiliated with them, so you can charge your meals to your room. The service is slooooowwwww, but just go with the intent to enjoy your new dive friends' company, and you'll probably want to eat all your meals at O'Keefes.
Finally, on a personal note, there are a lot of dogs there who are not well-taken care of. If you meet "Oreo," a little dark brown dog with a white ring around his neck, please feed him for me! He likes spam or vienna sausages from the food co-op down the road! :) And if you are a vet, please bring something to help his skin condition!
