Our stay was booked for one night by separate sightseeing tour operator. A lovely choice. All wood architecture. Staff courteous. Room clean and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast both good. Just not enough outlets.

More a vast alpine chalet than a chateau, the Powederhorn, and its restaurant, the Powderkeg, offer quality, comfort and good service in a semi-rural setting. There is a beautiful bush walk within a few minutes walk as well as a charming walkway to Ohakune, two kilometers away, along a pleasant fast-running stream. There are glimpses of Mount Ruapehu above the...

The hotel is designed to look like an alpine chalet, and it doesn't hold back. Every wall, ceiling, even the floors seem to be clad in pine. However it is a comfortable stopover. The rooms are a good size, but like other reviewers we suffered from noise from an adjoining room. The walls are paper thin. Breakfast was disappointing and...

We stayed 2 nights and we were not disappointed! The Powder Keg restaurant was perfect and we had dinner and drinks there two nights. The room was perfect mountain ski lodge feel and comfortable. We (2 adults and 9 yr old daughter) hiked the alpine crossing and the hotel staff arranged a r/t transfer and 3 bagged lunches. The transfer...

This Hotel did not really meet our expectations. The room was rather dark and faced the parking area. We were told that no room has mountain view. As the walls are obviousely very thin, we could hear everything from next room. If one desires for silence, don't choose this place; because even during night, at least every three hours trains...

Excellent service from a lovely lady from Hastings, UK, lovely location (very speed ski) and very good pizzas. The reason for only 4 stars was that pizzas don't really test how good a restaurant is. That said the burgers at the next table looked good.

Huge selection of beers, great food, reasonably priced and a nice atmosphere. The staff are fantastic too, very friendly and efficient. We have been here for dinner and drinks twice this week, and will likely return again before we leave. Highly recommended.

We were here in the summer, but this hotel (and the whole town, in fact) is clearly more oriented towards skiing, although there are many summer walks nearby. The hotel has a ski lodge feel, with wooden walls, ceilings, etc. that make it feel pretty dark. Rooms are comfortable, but could use more storage space, hooks to hang clothes on,...

Plainly this hotel is geared for the winter season as I suspect it comes to life then . It was very quiet when we visited in January so it lacked a little character, but everyone proved very helpful and friendly. The bedrooms are very spacious but because the building is constructed entirely in wood it can initially come over as...

If you go to Ohakune, you have to stay here! This place has so much character and charm. I love chalets and this did not disappoint. Very spacious, balcony, office, massive bath (would fit two adults) and one of the best showers in NZ (we stayed in the room Sir Ian Mckellen stayed in when filming the LOTR). The little...
