After spending a night in busy Sapa town, we retreated deeper into the mountains for peace and quiet at Topas Ecolodge in Hoang Lien National Park…far, far away from the hustle and bustle. The property practices sustainable tourism and hires 98% of their staff from local minority hill tribes. It’s really an amazing place, and I’ve never seen so many stars in the night sky!! We woke up in the morning to crisp mountain air, chirping birds and chorusing cicadas, not exhaust fumes and honking cars. You may not get many food options at Topas Ecolodge, but what was available was pretty good, and the overall service for our stay had been exquisite and reflective of their roots…right balance of Scandinavian attention to details and functionality, married with warm Vietnamese hospitality 👍🏼 To truly enjoy Topas Ecolodge, you must identify with the sustainable eco-tourism ethos that they operate on, because you won’t get some of the common amenities you’re used to. No in-room TV, no in-room wifi, no mini-bar, no single use plastics (so no bottled water, etc). You can get free hotel wifi at the lobby, pool and restaurant, otherwise use your own mobile data if it’s that important. Many of the things they do have a sustainable objective and benefit the minority communities, even if it means guests have to pay a little more for the experience. It’s kind of like paying more for organic foods…it’s only worth it if you believe in the benefits vs regular foods that you can get for a fraction of the cost. I’d planned the itinerary without telling my wife the details. When we checked into Topas and she found out all the incredible things that they do, she said I should’ve booked more nights 😂 I’d mentioned in my booking that my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the staff thoughtfully put a cake and a bottle of champagne in our room! We loved the place and are already talking about going back on our next holiday.

Easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed. There is not a single bad view from anywhere on the property. We spent most of our time at the pool sat in awe of being up in the mountains and never actually went into Sa Pa town! The food was great and plentiful, and the restaurant has a really nice wine list. Highlight recommend doing the bbq dinner! Anna is incredible and so helpful. The entire team is so friendly, too. Apparently most of the staff come from the villages in the surrounding areas, which is in line with their mission of supporting the local area. Topas will help to arrange excursions, so if you’re up for a day of culture and learning I recommend doing the Nam Cang village tour: simply incredible, and you get a chance to see the Topas Riverside Lodge as well. Definitely a place to spend at least two nights. Can’t wait to come back!

I asked to change my booking by 48 hours (for a booking 4 months from now) and they wanted more money. This was ONE MONTH AGO and I still do not have my $1000 cad refund after cancelling my reservation due to their crappy customer service. My instincts that this place is another victim of its former success is being proven right every day that goes by. BOOOOOO.

My 2nd visit. This time I spend 3 nights in the resort, enjoying the beautiful and stunning view, along with foods with touch of fresh and season ingredients. Rice field excursion, day trip to local village, and waterfall BBQ are highly recommend. Love this place and will definitely come back again.

This lodge is the worst at responding to emails. I need to cancel my August 13 booking due to Taiwan's flight ban and have sent 5 emails since May with no response. Avoid as this is unacceptable! For such an expensive lodge, your customer service leaves a great deal to be desired

We stayed here at the end of May and did the three days, two nights package with two hiking tours included. They let us switch one of the tours for a different hike than was originally included in the package, which was very nice. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The lodges are set on top of a hillside in the middle of gorgeous mountains and rice paddies, and the whole resort is blanketed in flowers and greenery. The heated pool was great after hiking, and you can get meals delivered straight to your cabin in the evening if you wish. The hikes were my favorite part. We went with a local guide from a Black Hmong village who was incredibly knowledgeable, nice, and funny, and really enjoyed getting to see more of the scenery as well as local village life. I'd definitely come back!

Dear Meganm, Warmest greetings from our Mountain paradise. Thank you so much for your beautiful description of the lodge and taking your time to tell us about your recent experience at Topas Ecolodge. I am elated to hear that we was capable of providing you a memorable holiday. It is only made possible by our local minority tribe staff that is so hard working, but always with energy to smile and laugh. Topas Ecolodge really do have so much to offer and we are pleased that you highlighted this in your review, from adventures trek to the jungle or authentic villages to soaking in the outdoor infinity pools and comfortable in-room dining. The Topas team and I are sincerely looking forward to welcoming you back once again. Until then, my best, Christian Milling Nielsen

We wish we could offer a higher rating, but Topas is extremely disappointing. First, we will tell you the best things about it. Then we will discuss all the ways that it needs to improve: WHAT'S GOOD The location is indeed beautiful. The service is excellent. The food is very good. The rooms are comfortable and very nice. So why did we have such a terrible stay? There are many ways this place could be improved: WHAT NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED 1. There needs to be more peace and quiet. We came here because we thought it was a true retreat in nature. (That's how it is advertised on their website.) Instead there were many very loud families with screaming children and babies who constantly disturbed the peace. The common areas (the restaurant; the lounge; the pool) are often crowded and noisy, not peaceful at all. (Here's a recommendation: In the restaurant, there are two dining rooms. One should be reserved for loud families; the other should be reserved for quiet couples.) There was also extremely loud construction taking place when we were there. We could not escape the noise unless we just stayed in our room the entire time. We could not enjoy the serenity of nature outside or go to the pool without being subjected to the constant cacophony of hammering, drilling, and buzzsaws. We never would have stayed at Topas if we had known how loud it would be. This is especially true because this place is extremely expensive, Topas is 10 times as expensive as excellent hotels in Hanoi (and 5 times as expensive as many of the best hotels in Sapa.) The food is also about 3 to 4 times as expensive as food in other places, but you have no other options to eat because you are so far away. 2. There needs to be a separate place for smokers, far away from people who want to breathe fresh air. Again, we chose Topas because the website says it's one of "the best places to stay if you care about the Earth." Instead, we were choking constantly from the cigarette smoke of so many guests. For example, countless guests just smoked right outside the restaurant and lounge, where the smoke came right in the open windows and doors. As a result, we could not enjoy our meals without sucking in so much smoke pollution. Again, this is not what we expected by going to an eco-retreat with the promise of nature's fresh air! To be honest, we were relieved to leave Topas. We joked that we needed to go back to Hanoi to enjoy peace and quiet and relatively clean air! If you really like to enjoy nature, we do not recommend you come to Topas. It is not the refuge you seek. It is just a place you will spend a ton of money.

Dear Alisco, Greetings from our Mountain Home. Thank you for taking the time to write a review on TA, I am happy to read that you got to enjoy many aspects of Topas, but also deeply sad to read about the areas you feel we fell short on the expectations. We do believe our location in Hoang Lien National Park on our private mountain is offering a very unique dramatic nature experience whilst being surrounded by mountain peaks and lush valleys filled with rice, corn, and wheat. Regarding the noise, - The installment of the roof on our new 360 degrees restaurant been more noisy than anticipated, and I can understand the frustration this must have caused. - I have raised your concern about the restaurant seating to my Restaurant Manager, and he will be more proactive in separating families with smaller kids in the Stilt House Restaurant. - Our outdoor pools is indeed popular, also among the younger crowd. We do offer a "Adult Only" section with pool and warm jacuzzi Regarding concern about the price, Topas is based on sustainable hotel operations, we commit to leaving a minimal impact on the surrounding nature and support the local life. Our bungalows and lodge is mainly built in hand carved white granite, similar to what you find at the Notre Dame in Sapa that's stand its test of time being over 100 years old. But these initiatives often comes with a cost, but we believe sustainable tourism is the future, and our guest can accept the extra cost it may have. We are one of two resorts in Vietnam that have a Waste Water treatment system on-site so dirty/soap water doesn't run into the rice fields. Our staff from nearby villages makes up for 95% of our total team, what they don't have in experience do they have in personality, but we invest in them providing accommodation, daily English lessons and intense training according to their department. Solar power runs our lights, whilst the hydro dam is generating the rest. A zero plastic policy, organic gardens, glass crusher turns your wine into sand for concrete and our incinerator makes sure no trash leaves the lodge. I am happy that you were pleased with your private bungalow and its minimal Scandinavian design to allow for the complete escape from everyday life and immerse themselves into pure nature. I have also shared your very kind words about the service and foods to my Head Chef and Restaurant Manager on yesterdays meeting. I do hope that you in the future would give us another try so we can show you how idyllic our lodge can be. Many new things is launching in a month or two, such as Private Pool Villas, and the new 360 degrees restaurant will be open. Please contact me directly if there's anything I can do for you at GM@TopasEcolodge.com The Topas family and I look forward to hopefully welcoming you back sometime. Until then, my best, Christian Milling Nielsen

Wow! This place is stunning! And so much to see and do. It was quiet and felt private, although Vietnam had only just opened to foreign tourists. I still think at capacity, it would not feel too crowded. . Rooms: We stayed in Bungalow 211. The view of the mountains and valley below were spectacular. We sat on our private balcony, drank the complimentary tea and just enjoyed the view! The rooms are simple but really comfortable. The bed is very comfortable and there is plenty of room to put your stuff. There are 2 chairs and a table both in the room and on the patio, as well as a chair with desk in the room. The windows are huge so you can lay on the bed and look out at the mountains but there are blackout curtains so you're not woken up too early when the sun comes out. Re-fillable, glass water bottles are provided, along with a kettle and teas. They provide a turn-down service and leave some very tasty homemade sweet treats. There is a safe in the room. NOTE: There is reliable wi-fi throughout the resort but not in the bungalows themselves so if this is important you, it could be an issue. We did not miss this at all. Bathroom: Shampoo and conditioner are provided in reusable containers. There is a rain shower and a hand held one. The water is hot, which was really nice given the long hikes we did. 1 sink and there are toothpaste/toothbrush kits, shaving kits etc. Towels are replaced if you ask. Pools: We used the warmer pool (salt water) as the temperature didn't get much above 20. It's an infinity pool and you can swim laps. There are loungers around the pool with umbrellas and towels on each chair. There are also a few tables with chairs around them. There is a bar to serve drinks. I can't express enough how special it was to be in the pool and just look out into the mountains. Beautiful! The cooler infinity pool is directly below the warmer one with a jacuzzi. Both pools are crystal clear. Spa: We did not use the spa services so can't comment. Restaurant: The menu at the Stilt House was varied and the food excellent. The breakfast buffet had a good range of Vietnamese as well as European choices. Great quality. There is a firepit/barbecue in the evening where you can add a fresh piece of corn or sweet potato to your meal. There is also a "happy hour" and you can have free hot chocolate/coffee/tea as well as some mulled wine (which was delicious). Tip: If you sit outside, you'll have better views at the back of the restaurant but the front on the balcony also has a great view, just not as vast. Service/Staff: Outstanding! Everyone who works here is friendly, helpful, welcoming and well-trained. We were allowed a late check-out so we could shower and change before our flight home. The reception staff arranged walking tours and the restaurant staff were gracious and hard working. The lodge employs locals which is a great positive. While many don't speak English, this is not Connecticut! So please don't expect fluent English. There are staff on site who do speak English so if you do need this "service", it is available. Hiking: We arranged 2 hiking trips both through the Ecolodge and both were excellent. The first was the Nam Pa Jungle BBQ hike. Our guide was Tinh and she was outstanding. We'd highly recommend her! Our 2nd hike was with Tinh and the Red Dzao women. They walk with you (whether invited or not) which can be disconcerting for some people like the couple behind us who asked them to leave (they did). However, I found them really kind and particularly helpful when we were crossing some of the more wet and rocky areas (nothing terribly challenging, just wear good shoes!). Yes - they want you to buy their bags etc at the end of the hike but their wares are beautifully handcrafted and like everyone else, they're just trying to make a living. Be patient and trust that after their initial introductions and questions, they will just walk peacefully alongside you for the rest of the walk. NOTE: The drive to and from the lodge is up and down some pretty steep and narrow roads with km drops just inches away. If you've been to Machu Picchu, it's very similar. We booked the Topas Ecolodge's shuttle service and the driver was excellent. He drove very slowly and carefully - even through some very dense fog at one point on the way up. While the views are stunning, it can be a little unnerving. However, the professionalism and attention of the driver more than mitigated these fears. We took the shuttle from Hanoi's French Quarter and then to the airport. Both times the driver was on time and very professional. Tip #1: Bungalows/Rooms are spaced out over the grounds and the walk is up and down hills (short inclines and declines). The 100s & 200s are a few minutes walk to the main reception area and 1-2 min to the restaurant and the outdoor pools. The 500s are closer to the main reception and pools but further from the restaurant. Tip #2: If you're debating whether to stay here or the Riverside Lodge -- stay here! We visited the Riverside on one of our walks and while ok, it is not in the same league imo. Spend the extra as you'll be glad you did! Tip #3: Don't feel you need to visit Sa pa town, especially if you don't have much time. It's a 45 min shuttle ride one way and while we didn't go, the people staying next to us and the people we spoke to at the pool regretted going into town instead of doing a hike. They said it was just hotels, restaurants and markets (many of the hotels and restaurants were closed). They didn't stay long and felt they could have better spent their time at the Lodge or on a hike. If you can't already tell from this review, we had an amazing time here and of all the wonderful places we stayed on our 3 week tour of Vietnam, this was a highlight - a place we would definitely come back to!

Dear annal335, Happy spring greetings from the mountains Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful in-depth Topas Ecolodge experience. Wow what a wonderful review to start the week with, you put a big smile on everyone's face this morning. I feel very proud and happy to read that you enjoyed every aspect of Topas Ecolodge, from our sustainable initiatives, our well trained mountain drivers, the food & beverage, your private bungalow and our breath taking outdoor pools. I do also really appreciate you sharing you're travel tips, I'm sure it will benefit other visitors of our lodge. Regarding the tip for 500s (Deluxe) bungalows, can I add to that, that in July will we open 9 private pool villas nearby, and in August will a brand new 360 degrees restaurant cater breakfast to the 500s + 600s ( Pool) Bungalows. The 360 Restaurant will then again open for dinner service, offering an exclusive 360 degrees sunset view over the mountains. Sa Pa town, is unfortunately not what it used to, but luckily do the great nature and local life remain the same outside of the town. I always recommend guest who got a couple of nights to spend in Sapa, to do a combination of our sister lodge, Topas Riverside lodge to experience the local village life, in a comfortable "homestay" style and then end your holiday at Topas Ecolodge with amazing views, I believe that package is the best way to experience the true Sapa. Again, we thank you so much for giving us a chance to serve you, and your amazing in-depth review of our little lodge in the North of Vietnam. I hope we will be lucky to have the opportunity to welcome you back again one day. Until then, my best, Christian Milling Nielsen.

My friend and I’ve just had a wonderful getaway trip at this stunning resort. Every single detail was just perfect: comfort shuttle bus, beautiful suite with spectacular views, amazing local food, and helpful, generous and service-minded staff, especially we would give a big credit to Mr. Thang-Restaurant Manager. The atmosphere and moments that Mr.Thang and his team curated for us was memorable. Attention to details, genuine and thoughful service like rarely seen at the other hotels. We could not ask for more than that. We will definitely look forward to coming back to Topas Ecolodge.
