We believe in simplicity, in wholesome living, in balance. We are surfers & yogis who are inspired to live by these principles .The Pineapple House was born from this passion. We are not a full service yoga retreat or a cheap surf camp. We are quite small and personal but perfectly formed. Do as much as you want or nothing at all.

I knew I wanted to make my first solo trip to Bali worthwhile coming all the way from California, so I decided to stay at the Pineapple House for 21 days. Based on the reviews combined with the extremely welcoming vibe I got from Rachel leading up to my trip, deciding to stay at the Pineapple House was by far the best decision I ever made.

I didn't want a full fledged surf/yoga retreat that was extremely structured as I wanted to be able to go off and explore the rest of Bali. Whether it be an overnight or day trip to Ubud, Nusa Lembongan, a bike trip up the east coast to Lovina or just taking the scooter around and getting lost - the Pineapple House was the perfect place to make this happen!

With the house being tucked away from the jam packed roads of Bali, yet close enough to amazing eateries and the beach - the type of people the Pineapple House attracts absolutely makes the experience wonderful as there are only 3 rooms in the house. I made some amazing friends during my 3 weeks here and I am forever grateful for the people I have met.

Desa Seni Resort is next door where you will get vouchers for your yoga classes. This by far was the most beautiful setting I have ever practiced at - hearing the birds and animals chirp in the background with wonderful instructors, Angela and Bernd's classes were my favorite. Fly High Yoga is definitely a good time as well!

Above everything else though, the staff is incredible at the Pineapple House. This can absolutely make or break an experience. Rachel has done an amazing job hiring the best in the business and it shows. Rachel is a truly genuine individual and you can feel her positive energy as soon as you meet her. Having a dog myself, I loved Rachel's dogs greeting me upon arrival every day as well. Era who oversees the day to day operations is an absolute sweetheart (Chile and Emily, too :) - her massage treatments are hands down the best I have ever had. Putu is just lovely, she will make delicious breakfasts every morning and always has a smile on her face. Having spent 11 surf sessions with Sunni, it was a joy to venture out into the waves with him - he has such an infectious personality and I truly looked forward to getting up at 6am to surf bright and early as I know it'd make for a fun morning.

Having left the Pineapple House not even 24 hours ago, and the last words that Agus (the driver/rockstar who took me to the airport at 5am) said to me were, "don't forget me" - that to me, was precious. The Pineapple House has left a lasting impression on me that I will cherish forever, I look forward to coming back again in the future when I make it back to Bali.

Thank you Rachel and your team, you guys are incredible! <3 <3

My daughter and I just spent 3 lovely days at The Pineapple House Bali! We really enjoyed everything about the ambience, relaxed atmosphere, the massages and access to the Yoga classes right next door. The staff were very friendly and so helpful with anything. I highly recommend this place and would love to return!

I stayed here for a week in september. The pros are that it is small, very relaxed and the staff are super helpful. The breakfasts are also quite decent. I was sunburned one day and one of the staff drove to the chemist to get some painkillers.. it gives you an idea of how well they look after people. The only downsides are that it is a little bit far from the action so you're reliant on using taxis, but that's the only real downside. The place is a bit more expensive than other places in canggu, but it is worth it overall.

Hi, Thanks so much for your feedback. We're so pleased that you felt at home at the Pineapple House and that you were so well looked after. We love our team so much! I'm glad that you were able to explore the area while you're here. Though the beach is only a 12 minute walk away it's great to hear that you explored more of Canggu and the shops and restaurants here. We hope to see you back at The Pineapple House again! Stayed at Pineapple House for a six-day, five-night yoga and surfing package. Admittedly, PH is a very friendly place, run by Rachel and Era who are the salt of the earth—kind, thoughtful and very personable. Like most reviewers say, it is like staying at a friend’s place, and that perhaps is where the rub lies.

When you stay with a friend, it’s rather hard to criticize some points, but as a commercial endeavor, maybe there is room for improvement.

Canggu still has a bit of a quiet, simple village vibe. The location of Pineapple House is off a quiet street on a main road. And while a few good restaurants are a short walk (Savage Kitchen, Milk + Madu, Bungalow Living), the road is not meant for walking; it is treacherously narrow and busy at most times and can be quite dangerous for anyone walking, especially at night.

That said, a scooter seems to be the best mode of transport—and that requires bravery and guts along the streets of Bali. There is also a problem with the GoJek app which people might recommend—you can find a scooter ride out of Canggu, but have a difficult time finding your way back—because there are a lot of local zoning laws in the use of Grab, Uber or GoJek.

I stayed at Room 2, which unfortunately houses the Geckos and the Frog. It is a fairly simple room bedecked with a very comfortable bed. It is spacious with AC that works well. No one has yet to mention that there is no television at PH. That was fine for most of the time—except maybe when you want a bit of the news. The room is large but a bit dark in the daytime with only one window onto the kitchen, and except for a few sandy bits, generally clean and austerely furnished. Wifi worked well except for one power outage one night.

You can also hear a gong being struck from next-door yoga haven, Desa Senai. At first I thought it was to signal a yoga class. Turns out, it’s to welcome guests to their village. So yes, anytime someone new comes into Desa Senai, the gong goes off. And it can go off all day.

The bathroom while charming—has a stone floor and a grass roof. This means insects, bugs, lizards, geckos, frogs and the like CAN make their way in. I’m not particularly afraid of reptiles, but this caused quite some distress in another guest and understandably—the sight of a very healthy gecko on you wall can be distressing. Hearing the lizards sweep and creep around your floor in the middle of the night can also be, well, disconcerting. There are droppings from lizards on much of the counter space of the bathroom—but they’re so friendly, it’s hard to point it out! Also please, bring your own bath products. There is only a liquid hand soap so bring your own earbuds, body soap, shampoo and conditioner (they lent me bottles of the last two, when I asked). The ventilation in bathRoom 2 is rather poor so towels don’t really have a chance to dry off—you’ll have to hang them and your swimsuits outside.

Breakfasts are healthy, delicious and very simple: an omelette, fruit bowl, local pancakes—not all at the same time mind you. Just simple, home made fare that’s well, just fair. Lots of local fruit. Coffee is good; no juice. Except for eggs, not much protein.

Perhaps my biggest concern about Pineapple House is that they claim a bespoke experience as a yoga and surfing retreat. I mistakenly thought that yoga classes would be held in the place—but it turns out, they furnish you with yoga passes for the yoga center next door. Three passes for a six-day stay seems rather paltry, but you can pay for the extra classes if you want some more. A one-on-one yoga session with Rachel is available but can cost quite a pretty penny.

Surfing classes are given by Suni—a born and bred Canggu guy who really knows his stuff. I felt safe and totally enjoyed my three lessons with him. He would pick me up at a certain arranged time and we’d spend an hour or so on the beach, learning the basics.

All in all, PH is charming, simple and friendly. When I reconsider the value, essentially, I got airport transfers, three surfing lessons, three yoga passes, one massage and a simple breakfast for six days at the cost of around $885 USD. That’s practically $177 per night. Was it good value?

It was ok.

Truth be told, you can get a few better rooms and villas in places like Seminyak (example: Room and Vespa 1). And you can arrange your own surfing classes and yoga visits. Massages are a dime a dozen in Bali—and some are better than others.

For charm, quiet and friendliness—Pineapple House is way up there.
But for location, some cleanliness issues, and general value for money—I think there is room for improvement. That said, I wish them the best because they really are a friendly bunch.

Response from PIneappleHouseBali, Owner at The Pineapple House, Bali
Responded Sep 22, 2016
Hi, thank you for giving us your feedback on your experience with us, feedback is like gold to us and something we encourage to allow us to grow and deliver superior experiences. Era and I love sharing our love for Bali with all our guests and so any feedback helps us ensure that our passion is past on with top-notch services as well. Reading through your review I’m pleased to hear how impressed you were with our staff, the surf and the charm of our place! My response is quite long, but thought it was important to clarify and respond one by one We hate the thought that a guest’s expectations aren’t met, especially if they are things that can easily be fixed if they're brought to our attention during their stay. We’re keen foodies too, so the size and content of our breakfast, for instance, is something we could’ve easily rectified if we’d know you weren’t satisfied. We strive to meet our guests demands and requests, and go out of our way to ensure this is the case, so with your comments around cleanliness, this is also very easily resolved. We are sorry that, despite our warmth and friendliness you didn’t feel comfortable to approach us about these issues. Our quiet ‘hidden gem’ of a village, Canggu, has got a little busier as the more word gets out about how special it is! And yes this has affected the traffic around the local area. We strive to offer all options of transport to guests so they easily navigate themselves around Canggu, some guests are more than happy to walk around, others not so much, in which case there are many options of scooter, bicycle, taxi and private hire car, all of which are very inexpensive and comfortable options for getting around. We don’t put the TV’s in any of the rooms, nor do we have them in the communal space, simply because, well, we like to encourage people to shake up that routine and get out and explore beautiful Bali and the amazing connections here. That said, our wifi is good, as you mentioned, and most guests travel with a phone, laptop or tablet, which ensures they can stay connected to current affairs if required. Our villa is an old-style joglo, which is is a traditional indoor/outdoor home from Java, it has character for sure and isn’t a sterile modern Bali building, therein yes, we do find the odd gheko and bug in the rooms and the outdoor space. It truly is the nature of living this way in Bali. We chose not to spray the rooms regularly with nasty chemicals, as this simply doesn’t roll with our ethos of treating the environment well. In fact in Bali seeing ghekos in your home is a very auspicious sign, however we appreciate this may not seem so auspicious to some of our guests. We are sorry that you found the gentle gong sound coming from Desa Seni to be an irritation; I would like to point out that it isn’t constant noise but one that is occasional as guests enter the yoga village, and has even been described as peaceful by other guests. We will be adding toiletries as you mentioned, thank you for the recommendation, although most guests, in our experience, bring their own through personal preferences for particular brands. We also appreciate that particularly for weekend travellers who are perhaps travelling hand luggage this could be an inconvenience. We are sorry that you didn’t feel the experience with us to be bespoke. The group yoga classes are held at Desa Seni, the stunning, well established and world-renown yoga resort which is immediately next door to our property. This is mentioned on our website, and the number of classes offered is also clearly stated during the booking process but I will be looking into this to check it is clear enough to everyone booking with us. This is the first time we have had a guest expressing disappointment that the yoga classes are held at Desa Seni as, in our opinion, yoga experiences don’t get much better than the classes Desa Seni offer. We choose to offer Desa Seni as our yoga partner as we believe that this makes for a far more bespoke experience than having 1 set class at The Pineapple House in a day, at a set time, with 1 set style offering to a potentially very mixed level of students. When the classes are offered at Desa Seni, there are up to 6 classes to choose from daily, offering a wide range of styles with a large variety of teachers offering all different levels of classes, with the option to easily add more classes should you choose. You may not be aware, but the price of a 1:1 private class is actually below the standard for a 1:1 with an experienced teacher in Bali. We allow for a lot of flexibility for our guests schedules frequently accommodating shifts in timings of activities and offer a wide range of alternative experience here from different healing modalities, tarot, coaching, island tours, with the aim that each guests experience will be bespoke and unique to them, however we are sorry that you didn’t feel this was the case for you. Absolutely, you can create your own ‘experience’ cheaper by staying in a hotel and finding the activities yourself, however this dramatically takes away from the retreat feel where the activities are organised for you. Our experience has shown us that local knowledge on the best places to go, the best therapists to see, the best food to eat, let alone the connection to other likeminded, awesome guests is what makes the experience truly special! And we feel it is the connections and people that really make the experience what it is! We truly do appreciate all your feedback and endeavour to offer the best experience to our guests, in our nearly 2 years of operating this is our first ‘not so positive’ review, and hope it is our last.

Gorgeous villa, slightly off the beaten track in Canggu. Transport can be tricky to / fro the main part of Canggu if you don't ride a scooter. I was avid user of Grab (car / scooter taxi service) & had no issues but some may not be okay with this :)
For me, Pineapple House is all about the people that run it. Rachel, Era, Putu and Agus - you are each amazing and bring the villa to life. This was my first solo trip & I was apprehensive, but as soon as I arrived, I was made to feel right at home and totally at ease.
Yes the rates are steep for Bali, but if you want to travel and feel part of a family (there are only 5 rooms so it's an intimate group), you won't regret it. During my stay, I was lucky to share the villa with some awesome other guests and the memories will last forever. It was as if I'd known these people all my life, both the staff and the guests. Thank you all for making this trip a wonderful one.

I spent a week at The Pineapple House this summer and couldn't have asked for a better experience in Bali. The villa is located in Canggu, a small surf village on the west coast with a laid back vibe and tons of great cafes and restaurants. In between stuffing myself with chia seed pudding and coconut milk lattes, I managed to fit in some surf lessons at Batu Bolong and a ton of awesome yoga classes at Desa Seni and the Practice. The Pineapple House was the perfect base to come home to each day. It's intimate enough that you have a chance to get to know the other guests (a total bonus if you're travelling solo), but there's also more than enough peace and quiet to disconnect and have some alone time if you prefer (I recommend doing it poolside :). The staff was incredible - friendly, professional, attentive. They were ready to help with any request. I will definitely be returning to The Pineapple House on my next visit.

As soon as I walked in, I felt at home. The house manager Era is super sweet and immediately gave us a tour of the place.

The Pineapple House is centrally located to a lot of great restaurants and shops in Canggu, and near Old Man's Beach, where we went surfing. But every morning they make breakfast for you at whatever time works best for your schedule, and they were delicious! I really loved sitting in the dining area, overlooking the pool, and sipping on my coffee and eating breakfast each day.

Right across the street from the house is MyWarung Restaurant, and it's really delicious. A couple of other places are Savage Kitchen, and Milk & Madu.

Next door is Desa Sani, the yoga center. It's a really beautiful yoga center that is relaxing and picturesque. I recommend taking class there.

The surf instructor Suni picks you up from the house and takes you to Old Man's beach to his surf shop. They take care of all of the details - surf board, wax, rash guard. He takes you out to the beach, which is a little crowded, but that's expected for any beginner's surf spot. The surfing was really really fun. The waves are gentle and easy to have fun and the surf instructor Suni was really great.

They give you a local phone with all of their numbers, and they are reachable at anytime. This was a really great feeling, and I used it a few times when I had questions and they always answered - didn't matter what time of day. You can also use it to call a taxi.

The Pineapple House has a driver, Agus, and he's available to take you on day trips to anywhere you want to go. They charge a bit extra for this, but it's totally worth it. We did a full day trip to Ubud, and it was really fun! Agus is really knowledgeable about everything in Bali. It was definitely a highlight of my trip, so I highly recommend doing that!

I loved my stay at the Pineapple House. They really did a good job of thinking of everything to make your stay very comfortable. I hope to return again very soon!

My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights with the yoga + surf package. The Pineapple house is not a luxury hotel but a very, very nice B&B with having only 3 rooms. The rooms are nice and tidy and tastefully decorated. The general area is the same (the photos here do show how it looks like in reality).

Why I gave this place 5 stars is because they have the best staff I've ever interacted with. They truly make this place a gem, going always that extra mile to make you feel very welcomed (even before your trip has started). The breakfasts are super nice with simple but healthy and tasty dishes.

The yoga place is just next door at a nice outdoor yoga studio. The surf beach was a 10 min car ride which Pineapple House will arrange for you. You can also book private yoga lessons, tarot card reading, extra massages, anything you really wish for. A big plus is also the other guests. This place attracts certain types of people and it's very interesting to hear their life stories. The only minus is that you do need a scooter or a taxi for getting in and out of the Pineapple but it's not really an issue because you have easy access to both transportation methods. (Tip of the day: remember to ask how to deal with the taxi drivers; their fares/ having the meter on and what's the difference between the local taxi and the blue bird company. This was a bit confusing to us)

Hi Jacquie, thanks for getting in touch. And no worries at all for the question! It's our attention to detail, our flexibility and the care and attention of our staff that set us apart from the standard surf and yoga experience in Bali. We are more boutique than most and do not offer the typical 'cookie cutter' experience, we have the ability to give each guest truly what they are hoping for during their stay with us. I hope that helps! Rachel
