This was our third year booking with Island Point Lodge and we have already booked for next year. If you are more of the independent adventurer than this is your place. The lodge is located on Kupreanof Island in Alsaka. Don't let the thought of being on an island discourage you as the lodge has power, water, cell service and WIFI. When you land at the Petersburg Airport, the staff meets you and loads your gear into a van and takes you into town to get your fishing license and any other items you may want to bring to the lodge. Then it's a short drive to the landing and a five minute boat ride to the lodge and their massive floating dock which must be the envy of all the neighbors. I can't speak for all the cabins but ours was quaint and comfortable with a large double bunk, fridge, heater and full bathroom complete with shower! The lodge is what you'd expect - a large open dining room with plenty of seating as well as a living room with TV. Food was very good with the first day being a mountain of fresh crab to feast on. Other dinner items included freshly caught clams, halibut, grilled burgers etc. Breakfast is also available starting at 5 AM and lunch is a DIY sandwich station so you can take it out on the boat with you. You are issued your own boat and motor to use during the week and rods and reels are also provided. If you don't bring your own tackle they will sell you for instance a halibut kit and at the end of the week you return the kit and they will refund your money. You are responsible for your success or failure on the water. This is an unguided affair but in our experience the other guests are frequently repeat customers and are usually very willing to share some of their spots with a newcomer. As an example, toward the end of the trip someone had discovered a great spot close to the lodge where the fish were plentiful. Nearly every boat from the lodge was there and nearly every boat got their limit that day. It was great fun watching the other boats hook up and land their fish. Once you have your fish back at the dock the staff will bring them up to the fish cleaning station where the fish are cleaned and cut up to your specifications. After that the fish are marked, double wrapped and placed in the freezer. I forgot to mention the scenery - amazing. Whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea otters, and seals are typically seen and provide lots of photo opportunities and amusement for the fishing crowd. Prior to your departure at the end of the trip they box up your catch in airline approved fish boxes and portion it out so each box is less than 50 lbs. There is a small fee for each box but it's well worth it. From here you simply take your box to the airport and it's checked baggage - it couldn't be any easier. The beauty of this trip is the freedom it offers the angler. You leave the dock when you want and you come back when you want. If you want to take a day off and relax in the lodge or go and explore the town you can do that, if you want to get up at 3 AM and head out fishing you can do that - you completely control your schedule. We had a fantastic time and bringing home a few fish was icing on the cake. As I said at the beginning, we will definitely be going back!

My wife and I just had our 2nd visit to Island Point Lodge and I have to say, we had just as much fun and excitement as our first visit (Which btw was great!). We are proof that you don't have to be great fishermen to bring home a boatload of halibut, salmon, and Dungeness crab. Oh, and did I mention, you get to meet a lot of great people from all over the place. What we really enjoyed is the fact that Frank and his crew take such good care of us and we really can do what we want to do - fish? ok; go to town to sight see? ok; take a picnic out in our boat to enjoy some of the world's most beautiful scenery? every day. Thanks Frank and team!

The trip and fishing exceeded my expectations, just as described or better. The fishing was great, the equipment was well kept considering the abuse it gets. The staff tripped over themselves making sure you were satisfied The meals were good and if you go hungry its your own fault, not 5 star dining, but damn good. Rebooked for next year before departing for home. We took home about 250 lbs of Halibut, and about 50 lb of Chinook and assorted bottom fish. Most of our Halibut spots required a 30- 45 minute run from the lodge and some of the spots were located in big water, being an avid Great Lakes fisherman this was not a deterrent, although a few guests we pointed in that direction were not comfortable fishing open water. There were a lot of big fish landed in more protected waters, so you should be able to find fish in waters matching your comfort level. Our big fish for the week included a 163 and a 109, plus all the smaller Halibut you cared to catch. REMEMBER this is "on your own " fishing and sometimes you do well and other times you need to work hard for the fish. No one to hold your hand, everyone at camp helped anyone who asked for locations and techniques, just remember DONT ARGUE WITH THE FISH, they will tell you what they want to eat,

Expectations were high when I signed up for Island Point. Bottom line is they have the worst equipment I have ever seen and am surprised they haven't been sued or shutdown for safety violations. Boats were very poor, no fire extinguisher, props were all chewed up, the life jackets probably wouldn't float although I didn't try one. The lodge is old, sleeping quarters in the lodge were ridiculously poor with no where to store your clothes or equipment. Food was adequate to good although you would expect something more than tacos and burgers for the price paid. Don't believe what they write in their orientation package, its an exaggeration at best or applies to a previous owner perhaps. The fishing rods and reels were very poor and appear to not be maintained at all. They charge you for most everything other fishing lodges provide as part of the package. I wouldn't go back if they provided everything free including airfare! You would do just as well renting a room and boat in Petersburg and going on your own. This is clearly an operation for maximum profit with minimum to no investment! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! (Watch for more reviews-most all of the 33 people there felt the same way!)

Ask for a deposit back due to COVID-What do you think?? Island point lodge, Petersburg Alaska
We booked a trip to Alaska for a fishing trip. We called to cancel our trip on March 30,2020 due to the Covid19. So I called and emailed the owner numerous of times to get our deposit back. He told us we couldn’t get our deposit back. We can book it for next year. I told him we don’t know what’s gonna happen next year we have been closed due to the Coronavirus. That we are at a stay at home order.,He told me that in order to get our deposit back we should’ve canceled by March 15 2020. I told him this was not normal circumstances. We fill out our information paper work for our deposit. No where on that paper work said anything about a cancellation date. We found the cancellation date timeline in a booklet he sent us. So basically he told me that good luck on getting our deposit back. Going to the bank and filling out paper work. What else can be done to get our deposit back? Oh my husband is a high risk. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Just returned from a trip with this outfit. If you are thinking about going on an Alaskan salmon trip think twice before booking with these guys!

They completely misrepresented themselves at the sports show were we booked our trip. We were told that there was numeros rivers to fish for salmon. Wrong...in fact their was only 2 or 3 rivers and the majority of the salmon that where in the area were hatchery fish, and would only bite eggs under a bobber (not my expectation when going to Alaska).

Also the halibut fishing was subpar. You will have to travel well over an hour by boat to get to the fishing grounds (at the show we were told fishing is done 10 to 15 min from camp).

Lastly don't expect any fishing advise from the owner or staff!

We had a group of 5 that just got back from Island Point Lodge (IPL). The lodge has comfortable capacity to handle a couple dozen clients. When we arrived we found that 40 people had been booked!! With August being “prime time”, it was concerning that Frank, the owner, was gone the entire week. His staff was very short handed but tried to do their best to accommodate the over-booking. As one might imagine, all of the better equipment (rods, reels, boat nets, boats) were snatched up quickly. We ended up with a boat motor that broke down and several rods/reels that were quite simply junk. Unfortunately, with the large number of clients, everything from room assignments to eating meals was a complete zoo. Pure greed in booking too many clients made for some real disappointments in this trip.

Stay overnight in Seatle you will need a good nights sleep before you start your fishing trip. If you go before the commercial crab season starts you can catch the Dungeness crabs but if you try when the commercial season is open you will loose your crabs at least if not the whole crab pot.

Very short but as he said, check your crab pots and get plenty of sleep. For new fisherman there is a learning curb and we suggest that each new fisherman or group get to know the repeat guests and ask them for advise. Don't be afraid to ask us also. We will help you with each of your requests. You have to remember this a self guided trip and we do have restrictions placed on us by the Alaska Fish and Game department.

While the location and fishing was good, our overall experience was not good due to very poor boat and fishing equipment, customer service and a diet lacking fruit and green vegetables. Our outboard motor failed three times, once leaving us stranded eight miles from camp. The trolling motor would not lower without having to disassemble the locking mechanism. This was never corrected the entire week, nor were we provided a replacement boat. Orientation to the region and fishing strategy was minimal; not a good place for first time Alaska fisherman to go.
