The owners are friendly and very happy to make any request filled. Highly recommend their accommodations!
This is one of those places I hate to tell folks about, but it's unlikely we'll be back this way for a while so I guess other people should enjoy it too.
Not greeted by anyone, never saw hosts.
There are no taxis at the Auke Bay ferry terminal and most are not happy to drive all the way out from downtown for a short ride. I was lucky to have been offered a ride by someone leaving the ferry at the same time and actually lived on Mendenhall Loop so it was not too much out of their way.
I could have tried to kayak, but took a hot shower instead. There was an invitation to use the laundry facilities so I did.
Directions to the breakfast part of the B&B are for drivers. It's over a mile to walk there and $15 did not cover food and coffee.
Waited 45 minutes for bus to get to downtown.
I was planning this trip and making reservations late in the season, you can probably find a better experience.
The place was dirty. The stuffed animals, skins and animal parts are just plain creepy.
I have stayed in many B&Bs and have never been so disappointed in the low level of service and total lack of hospitality. The location is quite lovely and a new owner could probably make this place delightful. But as it is, it stinks.
I guess the owners' friends and relatives must get better service because they wrote some nice reviews. What a shame there is no truth in them.
My wife and I stayed at Auke Lake from Monday to Friday of last week. It was a rainy week in Juneau but we had a great time. On Monday we arrived early and were welcomed warmly by Honeybee as well as Crystal and Jake. Dale and Honeybee are the owners and I had a chance to meet and talk with them during the week. It was fun to to Honeybee's picture at the airport (look for it right after security) and in the paper as she is also a local realtor. They were both welcoming and open. There are some rules in the house about use of the the downstairs after the morning but they are easy to live with. Other B&B's have common areas open 24x7 which is not the case here. However, they do have a large deck with hot tub and a closed in gazebo with grill. Crystal and Jake are a nice young couple. We interacted primarily with Crystal as she takes care of the operations. She tried to help us with whatever we needed. Everyone was a pleasure to work with.
The rooms were great. We were in Lakeside which had a full bath (shower), bedroom and sitting room with tv and frig. The frig was stocked with water and cokes upon our arrival. There were also snacks including popcorn. We had a few challenges, primarily user error, with the TV and blinds which received prompt attention. WIFI was excellent and included. THere is a washer and dryer which we were able to use. It came in handy during a week where clothes got wet and dirty.
Breakfast was basic and served buffet style. Breads, muffins, waffles, fruit, juice, yogurt, soft boiled eggs in the shell, instant oatmeal, granola bars, and coffee and tea. Not your made to order breakfast as at some B&B's but very flexible. This came in handy as we were leaving early on Friday so dale set up breakfast for us earlier then normal.
The location was great. Near Mendenhall Glacier and the marina which several of the Whale Watching trips go out from. We received a "local" rate with one of the companies as we didn't need a bus from town to bring us out. Once you find the location there is no problem. The first time however you want to come in during the day. If you come out the highway from Juneau make sure you turn right on the second occurrence of Mendenhall Loop road (called Back Bay Road or something close to that on the sign). The driveway back to the B&B will be on your right after crossing a stream. Make sure you have the address with you. Look for the mailbox with the flag.
We took advantage of the canoe to take a cruise of the lake, the hot tub to relax after a busy day, and the gazebo to cook up a salmon dinner with fresh corn on the cob.
We had one morning which was a bit hectic when a family with 6 small children chose to have breakfast at the same time as my wife and I. I was thinking that this isn't what I expect at a B&B, more like a Hampton Inn. However, I later learned that the hosts opened up their B&B to this family for one night as they couldn't find any other accommodations in Juneau. I felt bad about my impatience and it reinforced my opinion that the team owning and managing Auke Lake B&B are good people.
