Stopped here for lunch on the way from Seward to Homer as the restaurant we had planned to eat at in Seward had a massive line up and it was pouring the rain so we couldn't have a picnic. Checked the reviews and saw this was the #1 place to eat in Cooper Landing. The place is small and we ended up eating at the bar which was also quite small, but had a certain charm. One the specials that day was Halibut tacos. Sounded great to me. At first, I was surprised that the halibut was battered and fried, not grilled, as most fish tacos are. However, it was extremely delicious, and I highly recommend it. The halibut was moist and flavorful and the slaw on the tacos was delicious. All the staff were very friendly. Well worth stopping here. It was quite busy though. We arrived a little after noon and by the time we left all the tables and bar were full and some people were sitting outside in the covered seating area.…
We stopped here by chance passing through Cooper, and we had a good meal in a true Alaska roadhouse. Burgers, halibut tacos and salmon chowder were all very good. Beer was cold. Prices are typical of the area. Portions were good. Friendly waitstaff.
The cabin was filthy. Stains and food in the sink, bathroom not clean. The front desk person was rude but the wait staff in the restaurant were very nice. I would not recommend this place particularly for the price.
The cabin was cute in appearance but it was filthy. For some reason they have teenage boys cleaning the cabins. Anyone who has teenagers know that boys do not know how to clean (at least most of them). For as much as you have to pay per night i expect a clean place at least. There was cobwebs in both rooms, mold in the bathroom and the floor looks like it hadn't been swept in months. There was left over coffee in the coffee pot, a small fridge but it was not plugged up, you had to unplug the lamp in order to plug it up. For some reason there was dish soap but no dishes. The cabins are only like 5 feet apart and closer to the road than I thought it would be. There was a bar/restaurant on the premises but the food was just OK.
Clean comfortable room friendly service good food. What more could you ask for? We just stayed here one night, and we were actually on our way to a wedding in Homer. We took a taxi here from Seward and someone came to pick us up. It was everything that we wanted and more. We took a hike up to the Russian River Falls, Which were not that impressive. It was a beautiful trail, and easy hike. We saw grannies and little kids on the trail. The lower Russian River was cool. We saw lots of fisherfolk.
Crazy good hamburger, ..thank you Asher for the great service, ...ambiance for days, originally built in 1952, Gwin's still retains that feeling of a true roadhouse .. definitely worth the stop, only about an hour from Seward .. you won't be disappointed
We spent 12 days in Alaska, and my plan was to be carted onto the plane ride home in some sort of "fish coma." With the exception of one night when my family wanted to eat something that wasn't fish, all the other days I ate after breakfast, it was some version of halibut or sockeye. After a guided float trip down the Kenai, we swung on into Gwin's, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of their halibut. It was very, very good. Service was also great. If you are going by this place any time during lunch or dinner and like well prepared fish, do yourself a favor and stop in. You won't be disappointed.
Do not miss dinner at Gwins, the halibut tacos are awesome!!! The service is outstanding, thank you Janice for an outstanding experience, we had a great time and the Alaskan beer is great!! This is a must for your visit to Cooper Landing, Alaska.
Great food after the Russian River Falls hike. Family friendly and great service. Burgers, fish, and carrot cake were great. I will add this to our drive from Anchorage to Kenai. The dining room got busy at dinner time, but cycled tables fast.
We stopped here for a late lunch/early dinner after a long day of fishing. The outside was charming and only expected bar food, but we were pleasantly surprised with the menu. We had a fantastic waiter who made recommendations and answered our questions and provided excellent service. The food was exceptional with salads, burgers, and desserts. We truly enjoyed our meal and would recommend this restaurant to everyone! There is also a souvenir/supply store and a liquor store, both next to the restaurant.
