We were looking forward to a rustic fishing cabin type bnb experience. There was zero warmth in terms of hospitality. The breakfast was as weak as it could be. I don’t know the alternatives but definitely look elsewhere.
We stayed at The Hutch mid June, 2022 upon the recommendation of a friend and previous reviews. Unfortunately it is very evident that George and Shirley were the stars of The Hutch and that the new owners could care less about its clients. When we got there late afternoon there wasn't anyone around to check us in and we had to go across the highway to a general store to get someone to come back across and check us in. Then, the rooms were not very clean with popcorn under the furniture and leaves on the old carpets. We also noticed a broken glass spotlight cover along the way to the back staircase - we reported this as there was glass on the sidewalk - when we left three days later it was still there. First day of "continental breakfast" there wasn't any milk in the refrigerator for the cereal. The attendant young man was asleep in the office with his feet up and when we woke him up and asked about more milk his reply was "It will be coming". Day two - still no milk in the refrigerator and again we woke up the attendant young man and his reply was the same. Once again, he didn't even get up out of the chairs. Day three - still no milk and still the same sleeping attendant in the office. Another guest woke him up and politely told him that the lack of milk on the third consecutive day was not acceptable. The young man told her he couldn't do anything about it and she asked to speak to the owners. Immediately the young man called across the street and milk was delivered promptly. Then the young man told us The Hutch was going to be turned into a "dorm" for the seasonal workers for the new owners who were building a resort across the street. If the new owners don't care about current clients, then what sort of service will the new place have? There was also no one in the office or even on the grounds during the day to direct us to the guest laundry or to change out damp towels. Think twice about this place before you stay!…
The Hutch turned out to be my best experience in Alaska. Not only was the location perfect, but George and Shirley were also the best hosts ever. I shared my experience with close friends who were going up a month later and they too loved it. I flew up to meet them and stayed there again. When I go back, I will make this my home base. George and Shirley made our stay feel like a family reunion! Breakfasts were delicious and we had everything we needed. I can't wait to go back and I would recommend this place to everyone looking for a solid, clean, safe, and comfortable place to stay! I can't wait to see George and Shirley again!!!
We all enjoyed The Hutch! Our group ranged in age from 4 to 84 and everyone was comfortable and had a great time. Shirley is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We fished the Russian River, hiked Cecil Mountain, did a family raft trip down the Kenai, paddle boarded, etc. Great location - highly recommend.
We spent two very comfortable nights here, and the owners were very accommodating in letting us decide last minute. They provide a nice assortment of breakfast foods during extended hours, comfy common areas on all floors, and well furnished rooms. The views from the porch are great of the Kenai river and the mountains. And all for a bargain price!
This was my husband and my first time to Alaska. After spending much time planning and looking for the best location I choose The Hutch B&B in the tiny town of Cooper Landing about 100 south of Anchorage. I picked right! The Hutch, run by Shirley and George was perfect, they are wonderful hosts, warm and welcoming. A light continental breakfast to start the day, beautiful mountain scenery out your door, nightly fires/visits, wrap around deck to sit and enjoy, clean, comfortable rooms supplied with toiletries, the use of laundry facility, commons areas to relax in, frige, microwave. We were there for 4 nights in late May 2021, very quiet time just before salmon fishing season. Shirley and George are very knowlegable of the Kenai Peninsula area. We would recommend staying here and if we ever get to that area again we will stay there. Thank you so much Shirley and George for your hospitality …
We love staying at The Hutch. We have been staying here for 10 years. They are very friendly, clean, very nice beds and the property is beautiful. You can cook out on the grills and sit by the fire pit at night. We always meet some very nice people. Also they have a very nice breakfast.
My wife and I stayed at The Hutch for a couple days before going on a cruise. The owners are very hospitable and the evening camp fire is a great way to end the day, regardless of the weather. The rooms are cozy and the common areas are a nice addition. We even liked the stairs to the top, but that could be a challenge for some, so be aware that there are no elevators.
Bring your coolers of food and grill your dinner or your Salmon from the Russian River. George and Shirley are the best host and hostess. We have been coming here for years every August. Very affordable. They have made improvement to the property since we first started coming. The fire pit at night for socializing is the best. Have a smore or a beer and a cigar. I/We look forward to or stay and visit every year. Plan early because they do sell out in the summer early. Continental Breakfast which is sufficient before going on the river to fish. There are small refrigerators on every floor to store your lunch items for the river and dinner for the barbeque for later. You are here on vacation so no TV in the rooms, but you can watch a video in the common areas.
I have my guests stay at the Hutch every year. It has great price point. I place to connect with other travelers and wonderful owners. The have an outdoor grilling area that is nice to cook your catch on.
