Detailed Reviews
Me and my husband have been 5 times to Aitutaki and we know the island upside down and those villas are great value for money, clean and the staff are very friendly.. The owner is very nice to and always helpful.
Teina was our star :) she went the extra mile for us many times and thats not what we usually see when we travel.. Thank you for looking after us !

place was clean and very functional, but you go to the island for ocean and this place has too little of it for the price. Should be NZ$70 at most vs. 145. Boat Shed also terribly overpriced, small portion average food.

Although units are more garden view does not detract from the property at all with the close proximity of everything at that end of the island.
Onsite rentals and a great restaurant with a deck over looking the reef passage adds to its advantages.
After visting aitutaki a few years ago this end of the island has developed with 4 eateries within strolling distance, fishing and tours next door, sailing club, one wants for nothing if looking for a relaxing Aitutaki holiday.
An ocean view would be at least double the price of here and you are but metres away from it anyway

dont waste your time staying at this place as the owners do not know the meaning of hospitality or service.
The beds are shocking, the staff are never available to answer any questions.
What you see on the web site is not what you get!!!!!
I would recommend the place next door which is Rangiuru's or Samades - these places definitly know the meaning of the word service and treat their guests with respect, they also obviously pride themselves on repeat business - something Popoaras dont!!!!
It was just lucky that it was close to the wonderful Samade's where they have a wonderful bar and restaurant and also wonderful service. They also have the best swimming beach right in front of them.

We were picked up from the airport (complimentary) and shown to our villa. Aitutaki is pretty remote and and very quiet, and the villas are at the most remote end of the island, a good 7 km from the post office – effectively the villas are at the far end of the runway. Noise from the runway isn't a problem – there are only about 4 flights per day , all small planes & none after dark (some locals have a protest about flights on Sunday/ the Sabbath, when almost everything else is closed). However, it does mean you are another 2 km from anywhere else. You can rent a motor scooter or car on site but there was a Catch 22 – you need a Cook Islands licence for a car & we arrived on a Saturday & police station is open Mon-Fri. Apparently this is a long-standing problem which has never been resolved. Since there is no public transport or taxi on Aitutaki there was no alternative, so we decided to risk it and visit them on Monday – the locals we asked were all fairly certain there wouldn't be any problem and there wasn't.
The villas are self contained – they even have air conditioning which was essential in the muggy heat. It was very hot on the day we arrived. But the A/C was set at 24 degrees & couldn't be adjusted. The villa itself was about 3 star level (at a stretch) but given how far we were from the rest of the world it was pretty good for what we needed. A few things could have been improved - one of the chairs was broken, the mixer tap in the kitchen had the hot/cold connected the wrong way around, but that was it as far as issues went. We were in Villa 2 – a double bed and a single with a roll-away under the double. Basic bathroom (shower, wash basin & toilet). Kitchen with bar fridge, small cooktop, microwave, toaster & electric kettle, basic cooking utensils & crockery for 4. Very little storage space & nowhere to put stuff in the bathroom except on the floor.
Staff were very laid back, but also very helpful. On arrival we found that breakfast is not supplied – it used to be but they apparently changed several years ago. Our travel agent had on our documents that it was supplied, so the owner honoured it. Another time, OH accidentally locked her case with the key inside it – late in the evening when we discovered that, a staff member (the barman from the Boat Shed) came around and cut it off for her. They also scrounged around left-over equipment left behind by previous tenants and found us some flippers so we could go snorkelling by ourselves. They were also quite helpful on booking things for us.
Overall, a nice beach-style place to stay if you like it remote, quiet and hot.

We stayed here as a family for 4 days in December. Unfortunately the weather was at it's worst, so we were pretty much cabin bound. The rooms are rather small for a family when you are forced to spend so much time indoors. If we were to have got out more, I am sure they would have been fine. The "Boat Shed" restaurant on the property offers great meals throughout the day. We are hoping to get back there for a longer period, as we were unable to see any of the island.

Aitutaki is a fabulous desitnation but like any remote location, accommodation can be a bit hit and miss, especially when you are looking for value for money. There are some very nice high end resorts but the range of quality in the mid range is quite large.
Popoara Villas are a really nice, private property of 4 villas located in a secluded part of the island, very near the coast and a nice beach about 200m away. On site is the Boatshed Bar and Grill, and a significant rental company for cars and scooters operates on the site.
The Villas are well appointed, with a double bed and a single bed, air conditioning, kitchenette with toaster, pots, fry pan, elements and fridge. The villas are set up for 2 people but you can cater for 4 with what the kitchen has in it. The Villas are screened, which is necessary, as there are some mosquitoes around Aitutaki.
The rooms are service daily except on Sundays and the staff are helpful and friendly.
I highly recommend.

3rd visit to Aitutaki and first time at Popoara. We love this end of the island and Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas are well located and has the added bonus of The Boat Shed Bar & Grill (just remember to book!). Good facilities and we noted that they have upgraded one of the villas so presume others will follow. Clean and tidy and nice to have the cooking facilities. Great location with an easy walk to Ootu Beach and other bar/restaurant and cafe. The staff were friendly & we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. This is a quiet, relaxing place to stay & relatively private.

This was our second stay at Popoara , we stayed last year for few weeks and this year as well for 2 weeks and we enjoyed our stay as usual. The villas are clean, tidy, well equipped, good value for money and on a good location, on the breeze side of the island. Staff are very friendly and helpful and the owner is very friendly and helpful too.
Highly recommend this villas

Great spot, clean, affordable, easy access to the lagoon. Next to good restaurant with basic good food and cool reasonably priced drinks at the bar. Friendly staff, most hospitable, very safe. I would return in a heartbeat.
