We enjoyed our recent stay at Kopeka lodge. The room is fantastic for families, the property is huge and the owner was kind enough to meet us at the airport in Rarotonga with a bag of food. The host on the island went out of her way to help with anything we needed. However, the property was just a little bit too run down to be enjoyable for e.g. bathroom tap didn't work at all, no hot water, large holes in fly screens etc.

This is a rural area and one can't arrive here with high expectations for luxury or amenities. The cabin we had was well-equipped for the most part and there are two decks looking out at the forest. It is in a lovely setting, which we enjoyed, but the cabin was in need of maintenance (holes in window screening, water faucets faulty, hot water never worked and for the last 20 hours we had no water until the proprietor sent a water truck in to refill the tank right before we departed. We appreciated the initial shopping that the manager paid for on our way from the airport--she provided breakfast supplies and bottled water and stopped by occasionally to check on us. We cooked one night and the kitchen was fine for that, though supplies are limited and expensive at the local store. It is about a 10-minute walk to the store, which also serves as a good BlueZone for BlueSky wifi. The other nights we went to the Villas for dinner and they were happy to provide free transportation to their off-site dinner guests.

This could be a good place, because the rooms are actually big and quite nice. In reality though it's quite neglected and obvious that there's only infrequently people staying there and because of that also not very clean. The owner lives in rarotonga, an older lady "takes care" of the place for him. That means she picks you up at the airport, drops you at the place and collects the money and then leaves. There is no reception, no contact number, nothing. And you are in the middle of nowhere. At the same time it's quite expensive (135 NZ not includ. Airport pick-up and drop-off) even compared to other hotels in the cook-Islands. So in summary the problem is the value. For half the price we would have been quite happy. But for the price we paid, we would have had much better options. During our stay I got to see all accomodation options for different reasons, so I want to add my ipressions on accomodation: - atiu guesthouse (Marshalls place) seems to have the best value and Marshall is a great host. - Atiu villas has the best quality, is the only resort-style accomodation, respectively but you nned ro be willing/able to afford it. -Tampere lodge is the only budget place (65 Nz), value is good

We spent two days at Kopeka Lodge and were the only guests that time. The units are spacious and provide everything for self catering. The garden is beautiful and you will see lots of birds like the Chattering Kingfisher there. The owner lives on Rarotonga and you have to make arrangements to pay him before you go. On the island a local caretaker (and I mean this literally) will pick you up from the airport and will help you book tours and provide you lots of tips what to do on the island. I recommend renting a scooter from Super Brown in town which makes getting around absolutely easy. If you are lazy as us and don't want to cook, this is also the place to get take away. Atiu is a magical island and this place is the perfect place to stay.

This lodge is a series of beautiful little two-bedroom cabins (with polished wooden floors and handmade wooden furniture) in a large garden. There are comfortable outdoor tables and chairs under huge mango trees out the front. You are a long way from the centre of Atiu (around 3km), which means it is extremely peaceful. Not even any chicken or dog noise, unlike just about everywhere else in the Cook Islands! The owner lives in Rarotonga, but he engages a local woman to take care of the place, and as I was the only guest during my stay, she and her family stayed on site in the neighbouring cabin at night. This wasn't really necessary, but it was nice that the owner was concerned about my comfort to that degree. He also met me at the airport in Rarotonga before I left and gave me a bag of groceries as I was to arrive on a Sunday when most shops are shut. The caretaker also kindly brought me food most days (coconuts, fruit and vegetables, and one day a whole plate of food from her family's umu!) It was a lovely place to stay. It would be especially nice for a couple on a honeymoon, or a writing retreat or similar.
