Detailed Reviews
I am a returning guest of Chignik Bay Adventure Lodge that just returned home from our trip in mid July 2021. This is bar none the best Alaskan fishing experience you could ever hope for. The Rantz family and their guides welcome you with open arms and treat you like family from the moment they pick you up at the local airport. Until the end of a great week.
The fishing, scenery, and local experiences are simply awesome.
I am shocked that Rod C could make the accusations he/she made. I can tell you that I have witnessed the way the community loves John, Mary and the whole crew. They are a respected and welcomed part of this wonderful small community. Shame on you Rod C!
Trust me that your time here will be a memorable life experience.
Thank you Chignik Bay Adventures for another great Alaskan adventure!
I hope to be fortunate enough to see you again next year.
Now I am off to smoke a beautiful King Salmon filet for my family!

If you love the sea, the wilderness, wildlife, enjoy photography and do not mind catching a few fish along the way, then take a plane ride to Chignik Bay, a small seacoast community located near the end of the Alaskan Peninsula, and plan to spend a few days with John and Mary Ann Rantz, owners of Chignik Bay Adventures. They will offer you a most unique, one-of-a-kind experience as you settle in to enjoy their hospitality set in a beautifuly wild landscape. Get ready for adventure and excitement...and be sure to bring your appetite!
We have been guests at their lodge for three consecutive years during the month of September. The lodge can accommodate small groups, individuals or couples looking for a quiet getaway. A shared common living and kitchen area, bathrooms and four very comfortable bedrooms are situated adjacent to the main house. Meals are served family style. Mary Ann's epicurean skills are varied, plentiful and rich - scratch cakes, homemade pies and cobblers from freshly-picked wild berries, will likely round out a meal of freshly caught halibut or salmon, prime rib, surf and turf and other seasonal fare. Plan to gain a pound or two.
You will have the opportunity to sleep well before you awake to start your day. Depending, in part, on the weather you may head out to Castle Bay, toward the famed Castle Cape for halibut and salmon fishing, or go up river for the seasonal salmon runs. Along the way, you will be in birdwatchers' paradise: eagles, puffins, murres, cormorants and gulls abound.Sea otters dot the sea surface in protective kelp beds, and on occasion, you can spot the blow of a whale or two close by. Along the coastline and beaches uprivers, you will likely encounter bears foraging for food. You will not go hungry, either. Mary Ann will pack a delicious lunch, complete with homemade cookies.
Every day is a good day on the water. The guides are very professional and extremely knowledgeable naturalists. They work very hard to give you the most lasting, colorful impressions to carry home. They will clean, fillet and freeze your fish, and leave you with bragging rights on the ones you choose to leave behind.
The flights to and from Chignik Bay offer spectacular flight seeing opportunities - a mix of coast, wetlands, majestic mountain ranges and snow-capped peaks, and small communities dot the landscape. For all these reasons, and so many more, Chignik Bay Adventures has become a top destination favorite on our Alaskan itinerary each year. We will return for more!

My brothers and I visited Chignik Bay Adventures the first week in sept 2016. I have sportfished in Alaska for fifty years and have visited eight different fly in remote fishing lodges. In all my years of fishing,i have seldom enjoyed a fishing trip as much as I enjoyed this trip with John Rantz at Chignik Bay Adventures. This place has two major advantages compared to other lodges I have visited.Chignik bay, although very remote, still has access to commercial air service--this reduces the transportation cost by about a thousand dollars per person compared to a private charter.Second, the specially designed jet powered, shallow draft boat used by John allows easy access to both the excellent fly/spin fishing in the Chignik river and the salt water fishing in the bay.We successfully targeted both silvers(and dollies) in the river and kings in the bay. In short, the fishing was great, the lodge accomodations were great, the food was great(I gained four pounds unfortunately!!), the scenery and wildlife viewing was great(saw many bears) and most importantly, the people(John,Mary,Mal) were great. If you want to have a first class Alaska fishing adventure, for a reasonable cost, in a remote and beautiful location with quality people, I strongly recommend a trip to Chignik Bay Adventures.

This lodge was never supporting by the locals. The owners have never given back and have tried to claim land from native locals.
The fishing economy is in a state of emergency, the owners were recently fined by Alaska dept. Of fish and game for taking fish when native locals could not even substance fish.
They also bring back alcohol to distribute, which hurts the community.

Response from John R, Owner at Chignik Bay Adventures Lodge
Responded Dec 20, 2019
Rod C must have our lodge confused with a different business. He has never been a guest nor been to our lodge. His statements are all false. We have a great relationship with the community and consider it home. Sharing in local activities and enjoying the warmth of the fantastic local people in Chignik Bay, Lagoon, Lake and Perryville. Categorically: We have always had support, help and encouragement from the locals and our community. We could not have built the lodge and business without them. We have never had any violations of any kind from any State or Federal agency. We enjoy a great relationship with ADF&G while practicing responsible harvest, timely logbook submitting , and in season communication directly with Chignik Weir, providing scale samples and data that help Fish and Game manage both commercial and sport fishing. We have never sold or distributed alcohol in the community. We have never fished out of season or illegally. We bought our land from a local man, Herbert Anderson, that was moving to Anchorage and appreciated the opportunity to sell. We have hired local and Native people to work for the lodge over the years and will continue to do so. Sad to see such unfounded accusations by a person that has never been to our lodge and knows nothing of our business and practice. We have enjoyed sharing the village of Chignik, the remarkable beauty of the area, the fishing and great people with our guests for over 19 years. We'll continue to cherish our local friendships and authenticity of true Alaska, remote and spectacular.

John and Mary Ann Rantz are absolutely fantastic. If you are looking for a great fishing experience, then this is the place to go. If you don't mind a long trip, then it won't get much better Chignik. We caught upwards of 30 kings per day and the majority were 20+ lbs. I got one at 33lbs. The fishing is only part of the experience as well. In addition to stunning scenery, when we got back to the lodge, Mary Ann was preparing one of her amazing dinners for us. This is truly all inclusive. Be prepared to gain some weight if you go! LOL! I sure did.

John and Mary Rantz, and young Mallory, provided the best salmon fishing experience I've had in my life!! I enjoy catching salmon, large king salmon, and this is the place to do it!! John led us out each morning to catch chrome chinook after chrome chinook in the Chignik River. My arms were tired each day from fighting fish. Mary spoiled us with absolutely amazing food, unsurpassed by anything I've had in 5 star restaurants. What a treat! I look forward to returning for another trip!

Fantastic, incredible, unbelievable are only a few words to describe our trip to John and Mary Rantz's - Chignik Bay Adventure Lodge. Mary's home cooking is out of this world and the six pounds I gained is proof. The lodge and rooms are wonderful with all the amenities to relax after a long day of fishing. The fishing is hard to describe and make it sound believable. Numerous double and even triple King Salmon hookups and no worries about catching your limits and big fish. A day of Silver fishing was exciting and never a dull moment and learning how to fly fish from John and Mal was a great experience. We caught and released over 85 trout in less than 4 hours, no exaggeration. This was the fastest week I can remember time just flew bye. Can't wait to do it again. Thanks Rantz Team
