We absolutely loved our 6 days stay over Chrismas at the family run Joe Jo’s By The Reef. It is paradise! The small size of it its perfect to make you feel super relaxed and comfortable. Everyone working there is super helpful and friendly. Tobacco Caye is a very small island which was exactly what we were looking for. You can get fresh coconuts right from the tree. The snorkeling is great and very easily accessible and close to the shore. You can use snorkeling gear, SUP and kayaks for free. We saw many big stingrays and lots of colorful fish. My boyfriend even saw a sea cow. The food is very good and the three meals give you a very nice rhythm for the day. You can buy lobster from a fishermen next door and the kitchen will prepare if for you dinner. The sunset bar is great…
To begin with we had to wait four hours for the boat to show up to take us to the island. There wasn't anything to do but sit in a cafe with questionable amenities. Not a great start. When we got to the cabin there was a lot of garbage and stinky seaweed in front of our cabin. My husband actually cleaned it up so we could enjoy the view. Not a great welcoming. The meals were at scheduled times. When I'm on vacation I don't want to have to get up early to eat or stop what I'm doing to be somewhere to eat at a specific time. And I didn't want to miss a meal because the food was good but not plentiful. And I agree with another person I'm not sure the owner is very honest. On the plus side the cabin was nice, the food was good, and the water was beautiful.
We had a wonderful stay at Joe Jo's! Very clean and cozy cabins on the leeward side of the island. Miss Carmen is a very good cook (we ate fresh and varied food every day) and both she and Dave are very friendly and helpful. If you want to refridgerate items you bring from the mainland they have a refridgerator that you can use. And while your on the island, don't miss out Pär's (swedish owner) bar at Reef's End! Sofie and Jonatan from Sweden
This was a return visit for us, and we very much enjoyed Jo-Jo’s by the Reef in a cabin directly in front of the reef, a few days ago. We stayed there for 3 days and had nothing less than a wonderful time. We rarely leave comments, or reviews on any hotel, but Carmen and Dave always made us feel special and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. The cabin was clean and comfortable, environment refreshing and beautiful people. Our friends wanted to know how we seemed so happy and relaxed when we came back home.
We, a family with two kids (10 + 12y) spend this summer four nights on Tabacco Caye. We very much enjoyed Joe Jo’s By the reef in a waterfront cabin. Watching the pelicans fishing and reading books in one of the hammocks. For two days we were the only people. Overall there maybe 10 on tourists on the island. It w as low season. There was only one bar open which was great for sunset. David, the manager of Joe Joe’s and his wife Carmen, the chef, were looking after us very well. Although we found it quite strange to have always set breakfast, lunch and dinner times. It felt a little bit back in being in a youth hostel. Overall we enjoyed it very much and we already recommended the place to several people. A very relaxing little paradise.
