I stayed in one of the sweet cabins at JoeJo's for two nights in April 2022. Loved every minute of it. Great staff, great location, wonderful little cabins, very much like staying in a village on a private island. The locals were mostly fishermen who live there and were private but friendly when spoken to. Two small bars serve drinks and some food but Joejo's is all inclusive and the food is very good. Carmen handles the cooling and will cater to special diets if necessary. She is a sweetheart. Dave handles the administraive end of thins when Louis isn't there and Darren is everywhere... in the office, greeting guests and taking care of your every need! He's a happy, charming, respectful guy who only wants your stay to be great. another wonderful thing about Joejo's is... use of kayaks, SUP boards, masks and snorkel fins is... FREE!! I am an older woman, traveling solo, and when I expressed a desire to go out with someone in a double kayak and snorkel farther out... Darren instantly said, "I'll take you!" He did and we had a great paddle. when I sent overboard to snorkel, I found that I couldn't get back in the kayak! My arm muscles weren't strong enough anymore! Darren got me back in and we laughed about it. He was so kind. He couldn't have treated his mother any better!! JoeJo's is wonderful and a hidden gem, far from the insanity of the tourist crush in other island areas..Don't expect a luxury resort. JoeJo's is much better than those!! It's real, it's sweet... and it's the real Belize.

Posting an edited review - added some of my thoughts about snorkeling. Booked through Airbnb, wanted to post the review (also) there, but was too late. We were not completely satisfied with our stay at Tobacco Caye respectively Joe Jo's By The Reef. But the good things first. No major complaints about our cabin, it was quite nice and clean and more or less as depicted on the pictures (it was big enough for 2, it would be to small for 3, even if there are 3 beds - for us one of them served as a closet). Well, there was no hot water in the shower, although the website of Joe Jo's states it. Also, our cabin was behind a large mangrove tree and therefore without any view and direct sun (as many cabins were empty, maybe they could have given us another one). WiFi worked well (at least in the dining room, in the cabin it worked only in the part (bathroom) that was closest to the main building) and there was free sunscreen provided at the main building. Electricity was available 24 hours a day (not a sure thing for such a small island). And Darren, one of the employees, opened and gave us coconuts, when we asked (as the they were provided for free, it would be even nicer, if he would have given them to us without asking). Transport to the island. General information from the host was, we should be in Dangriga between 9am and noon - the earlier the better. To not miss the boat, we arrived in Dangriga on the day before. As there was no clear information from the host, who would take us (at the very end he even wrote to us, we can take any boat bound for Tobacco Caye), we asked around and organised the transfer ourselves with captain Buck. As we were right about to leave, suddenly a guy Darren from Joe Jo's shows up and tells us, we should go with him and that we just have to wait a little bit. In the end we waited around 3 hours for the departure. Turned out we were waiting for another couple to arrive. Besides the waiting this was even more painful for us, because would we have known that it is possible to arrange the transfer so late (at 12:30pm), we could have arrived directly from Belize City and didn't have to spend the night at a costly acommodation in Dangriga (not many to choose from here), which also cost us one day of our vacation. Just to be clear - would there have been clear communication at least one day before, that we are going with Darren and that we will leave around 12:30pm, we could not complain that much and at least we could have slept longer and waited in our room in Dangrigra instead on the dock. And even more - by the time Darren arrived we already had the transfer organised and could have left at that time (instead of us then another couple took captain Buck's boat) and be on the island earlier instead of waiting in Dangriga and these people (Darren and his boss Dave, the manager of Joe Jo's) knew that, but they told us to go with their boat and left us waiting just so they could take the money for the ride also from us and not just from the other couple (the price is per person and not per boat). It seemed to us that also the other people / captains were stunned, when they saw what happened to us. Also, there was no apology, either from Darren nor from Dave, when we arrived at the island. On the other hand - for the way back Dave told us, that boats normally leave the island around 9am, and of course at 9am he was already looking for us asking why we are not ready, because this time he was in a hurry to get to Dangriga as soon as possible (BUT at our arrival he said around and never confirmed, that the departure will really be at 9am sharp). At the island. When we arrived, the manager, Dave, greeted us and at first he made a nice impression. I was kind of expecting that, because I read in some reviews, how nice and friendly the staff at Joe Jo's is and that was one of the reasons we booked here and not the a little bit cheaper option at Windward Lodge. But that was it, just the first nice impression, almost no information given to us after that, everything had to be asked, for example at what time the meals are (they are included in the price and are at specified times), where are the best places for snorkeling and how far out it is safe to snorkel, where it is good to go swimming,... I saw that for example guests from another accomodation were taken on a short tour around the island and had everything explained to them (the island is tiny, so not much time is needed for this). Especially as there were not many other guests at Joe Jo's (on the last day we were even the only ones), I think that it shouldn't be that hard for Dave to take a couple of minutes for us...or at least come to us from time to time and ask, if everything is OK, if we need anything or have any questions...but instead he was even hard to find, when we were ourselves looking for him. In the end it turned out that te cook was maybe the nicest of the staff, even if at first she seemed a little reserved. As for her cooking (also one of the reasons for us to book here, the reviews praised it), it was very much adapted to the US tourists, which is not that good, if you are looking for fresh and locally influenced food, and good, if you are from the US and want to eat similar as at home. But there were a few delicious fresh seafood meals (fish, conch). The meals were quite small and therefore it was good to have 3 meals a day (and I have to say, that normally I don't eat much). I also understand that everything has to be brought to the island by boat and that because of that they have to stick to ingredients that don't take too much space and have a long expiration period (and that on a different Caye in a much more expensive resort this might have been different). Another thing that was very annoying was getting something to drink (remember, it is hot there). Yes, they provided water or juice during the meals and there was drinking water available in the dining room, but the dining room was locked during the night. We had to ask for glasses and a plastic bottle to take water to our room. Guest should have been warned that they should bring some sodas or at least an empty bottle with them from the mainland. It would be good (I was certain that it would be the case), if Joe Jo's had a fridge and would be at least selling some sodas (Coke,...) and maybe also beer. Of course, there is no market on the island. Yes, there is a bar (not at Joe Jo's, but on the other side of the island), but it is not open all day (and night :)) and it only sells drinks that are suitable to be consumed right away (they don't have sodas in larger plastic bottles to be taken to the room for the time the bar is closed). Location. Joe Jo's is on the windier and not so nice side of the island. No real beach, access to the water is blocked by mangrove trees and also the water on this side is not nice (a shalow channel between the reef and the island with seagrass on the bottom). I was sad that we didn't book at Windward Lodge, as it is the only place on the island with something similar to a beach - a large sandy place (with sunchairs, hammocks) in the middle of the island, a small beach (sand and access to the water not blocked by trees) on the not so nice eastern side and a sundeck and an usable (for jumping) dock on the nicer side (they are both private to guests of Windward Lodge and their bar). Because of that I would disagree with one of the reviews I read, stating that Joe Jo's is the (best) place to stay on Tobacco Caye (yes, on the pictures Joe Jo's cabins look nicer and that was another reason we booked here, but in reality there is not much difference, just different color). I read that there is no real beach on Tobacco Caye, but I wasn't expecting that the options to go into the water will be that bad (there is one public dock for the fishermen on the other side of the island, which is the best place for that). Also in some places the access to the water is "blocked" by conch shells that are being (after the meat is cleaned out) thrown at the shore by the locals (maybe also as a barrier to prevent erosion?) and this is probably another reason that there is no nice sandy beach. And even on the nicer and less windier western side the water is not superbly nice - some sandy bottom parts, but also a lot of parts with seagrass on the bottom. Another thing to add is, that there is quite a lot of garbage on the island (not critical, but nevertheless) and the locals are also burning it. I know that we are guests on the island and that we can not dictate the locals, how to live, but on the other hand the island is a Marine Reserve, for which you normally also have to pay a quite expensive entrance fee (5 USD per person per day; just this time the rangers didn't show up to collect it, supposedly because of Covid), so one would expect that the island is better taken care of. Another nuisance at the time of our visit was, that the water was quite cold. Looking for the water temperature online I was expecting it to be warmer. I don't know, if this is normal or if it was a special occurence at the time of our visit only, maybe because of the wheater the currents changed and brought cold water or something like this; but after that we were in Placencia and the water temperature was like expected, much warmer than on Tobacco Caye (and that was on the same day we left Tobacco Caye). Snorkeling (I ADDED this part to my first review). Unfortunately for me snorkeling around Tobacco Caye wasn't much of a highlight. Yes, there were many stingrays and spotted eagle rays to see (also directly from the shore / dock), but not so many fish and to see higher numbers of fish and corals you also had to snorkel some distance out (not very far, but anyway not so pleasant, especially if the water is not really warm). For me snorkeling on a day tour from Caye Caulker to Shark Ray Alley and Hol Chan was much better (a lot more to see, even though I didn't expect much as it is super touristy as everyone is offering this tour). So, although the idea to be on an island at the reef with the possibility to snorkel directly from the shore anytime you want, without any time restrictions and without the crowds of other snorkelers seems appealing (it seemed appealing to me and was one of the reasons we chose to come to Tobacco Caye), I now thnik that it is maybe better to stay at a cheaper place (Placencia, Caye Caulker) and invest the price difference in dedicated snorkeling tours (or to invest more money and choose a different, nicer Caye). I REALLY have to stress that I know that the things described in the latter part of my review (lack of beach, garbage, water temperature, not so good snorkeling) are not under control of the management of Joe Jo's (maybe they could just encourage some changes regarding some of them (this, of course, doesn't apply to the water temperature :))). WE ourselves decided to come to this island, nobody forced us. These things that apply to the island of Tobacco Caye as such really aren't the fault of Joe Jo's, but I am nevertheless stating them to help the readers make an informed decision. As for the other things that are under Joe Jo's control, I have to say, that I would also be happy to express some of our concerns to the management personally when we were there (and not just write them here), but sadly (as described above) they just didn't seem interested, how we feel.

Hi Luks ,we are so sorry that you were disappointed ,especially where your complaints could have been remedied at once, had the hot water situation been brought to Daves attention at the appropriate time.Your experience as written will certainly be addressed to avoid a repetition of this nature. We are well aware that many, many guests are so facinated with our Little Slice Of Paradice and satisfied with our services that they do not require the special attention that a few others might be looking for.The majority of our excellent reviews attest to this and we will not be complacent , but rather thank you for your personal insight which we take objectively. In regards to the water taxi issue we need to point out that the option with Airbnb does not provide for transportation and you were entitled to take any water taxi that was available.Nevertheless,as a courtesy,we communicate by email in this regard and try to coordinate with our guests upon arrival to avoid delays.Something went wrong that morning ,and whatever it was, we feel your frustration. My Friend and Guest we are a tiny resort making every effort for our guests to have a wonderful experience.Let us know when you are coming back to our beautiful country again and we will do it the way you wish and deserve. Please always feel free to keep in touch.

Joe Jo's was the best stay on the tiny island of Tobacco Caye. We had an ocean view cabana with en suite bathroom and fantastic porch with a view. Snorkeling gear, paddle boards and kayaks are included and you can go Snorkeling right off the island. Carmen and family cook the excellent and plentiful meals for you each day (which is included), so you can relax some more in the hammock or on the porch, or go Snorkeling some more, or paddle. The island is so tiny that everyone knows everyone and you can ask around for guided tours if that's your thing or hang out at one of the two bars, but stay at Joe Jo's for the best food/accommodation.

We spent a week at Joe Jos for my 50th birthday. David and Carmen are wonderful hosts. We had the "honeymoon" cabin, which includes it's own deck for easy access into the lagoon. Three meals a day from Carmen, she's so accommodating and just wants you to eat! If you are looking to unplug, unwind and relax, Tobacco Caye and Joe Jos are the perfect place for just that. Beautiful little island with friendly people. Don't miss it!

My son(12) and I had an amazing stay for a few nights at Joe Jo’s on Tobacco Caye. I highly recommend it. Dave and Carmen, the managers, make you feel right at home and Louis from the mainland is very responsive as well. Go here! Be prepared to relax and unwind. There is SCUBA, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, and friendly people. You can do a night dive with the marine biologist on TC as well.

Wonderful get-away. The suite was the perfect accommodation for the three of us and even included a complimentary pussycat! The island and Joejo's delivered everything we hoped for--good weather, good water, good snorkeling, wifi, spacious porch for yoga and very nice staff. Carmen is a sweetheart and Dave is a very good fisherman. I returned home waterlogged, destressed, and happy. Thank you for all your help

We booked a fairly last-minute trip to Belize during the busiest travel time of the year (the holidays) and felt so lucky to have randomly found our way to Jo Joe's. The owner Luis was super helpful in advance about trying to fit us in despite the full status -- we happily agreed to move rooms during our stay just for the chance to be able to come at all. As a result, we had the chance to stay in the "honeymoon" cabin as well as one of the normal rooms in the main house. While the room was fine, we highly recommend the cabin! The cabins are lovely -- perched right on the water with amazing views of sunrise and the reef. The space is simple but comfortable and clean. The food at Jo Joe's (3 meals included in your stay) was delicious and we enjoyed the family-like atmosphere this small resort creates. It is family run (David the manager is great and his wife is an excellent cook! And we loved playing with his young grandsons who were visiting for the holiday) and since it is a small community it feels like family with the other guests as well. Jo Joe's offers free snorkel gear, kayaks, paddleboards and some games as well. Our only regret is that we weren't able to stay longer! We will definitely be back!

Joe Jo's, like every place on Tobacco Caye, is very low key. We happened to meet one of the managers (David) as we were getting on the water taxi out to the island- but we were primarily greeted and shown around by his grandson (9 year's old). Mind you- I'm not complaining. Unlike some of the places on the island, they have snorkling gear, kayaks and even some nice stand-up paddleboards... all included. The rooms- are nice, clean, simple. hot water only if the sun is shining (which is mostly wasn't for us). Joe Jo's is in the lee of the wind- so, it was a little calmer and quieter on that side of the island. The lagoon between the island and the reef is only a foot or three deep, so you cannot really swim out in front of your rooms. But it's a short walk down to Reef's end for some truly spectacular snorkeling. Our room (the honeymoon suite)- is the same size as the other cottages, but the back porch was over-water. While it doesn't seem like much of a big deal, it's semi-private between the mangrove bushes and if you watch carefully, there is an abundance of life to view just below the porch. Baby reef fish galore- sargent majors, trumpet fish, damsels, grunts, many other small varieties, crabs, a few small lobster, a big porcupine fish. And- at night, the glow worms lit up the shoal like fireflies. quite an experience. The sandy area around Joe Jo's was well raked and cleaned, and Carmen provided us three meals a day in the dining room. Food was pretty good too.
