The best things about this place is affordability. I was a solo female backpacker and TripOn was a convenient, affordable base for me with everything I needed. The breakfasts were tasty (so much fresh fruit) and the coffee, the wifi exceeded my expectations, there's a lot of comfortable chill out spaces and the curtains around each bed in the bunks which gives a decent amount of privacy.
I got in not long after Breakfast (after 30 hours of air ports/ planes) and the staff had me booked in and in my bed within like 10 mins of me arriving. And the cooking facilities were decent enough that I could cook lunches/dinners for the week and make my trip that much more affordable (Costa Rica restaurants are expensive). Would definitely stay here again.

I stayed here on my way to Panama and again on my way back to the states. The area...I did walk to the grocery and the bank without any trouble. The hostel itself...the staff are nice and helpful, they have a shuttle which is very convenient. I like how each of the beds have a curtain(s) around them so you have plenty of privacy, the beds also have a electrical outlets, a small security box with a lock on it, and a good light so you can close yourself up in there for days and read books or watch netflix while recharging your inner battery like I did and never have to come out! The kitchen is very good for a hostel although the trash should be tended to more regularly and there was always a sink over filled with dishes which was pretty gross. Plenty of refrigerator and cabinet storage, plenty of pans, dishes, etc. When I first entered the hostel, I was a bit concerned because it looked rather dingy but after the tour of the back part, I was very happy, everything is super clean!! Lockers are very very big. What else? Oh sound...sound is tricky, you can hear everything, however, it did not bother me, maybe because I was in my little cubby hole with the curtains closed all the time, it was like my own little world in there. I am quite older than the average hostel go'er and not a partier at all. I was at no point disturbed by any activities in this hostel. I slept very well and would suggest this place to anyone who travels in this type of manner. The first mornings breakfast was simple bread with jelly and peanut butter, but when I returned for the last 2 days of my trip, they really stepped it up and had a very nice selection of fruits, cereals, eggs, juice....better than many budget hotels offer and much more than the hostel should be expected to offer considering the super low price they charge for a night in the hostel. I stayed in room number 2 and suggest you do too if there is a bed available there.

Truly superb hostel, at a fantastic price. £6 gets you a dorm room, really comfortable bed with private curtains and a warm shower in the morning.

You also get all you can eat breakfast included which is brilliant. Who said Costa Rica was expensive ey?

I arrived here as the only guest in the hostel, so that did impact my experience/view of the place. My bed was comfortable and clean which is what i needed after a 13hr flight. The staff were friendly and helpful. However clearly during less busy times, the services take a break here. the kitchen and bathrooms looked like they hadnt been cleaned in weeks, there was no breakfast on offer as suggested. and im a dog lover, but not sure of the merits of having a dog that's terrified of people free roaming the building. fine for a night, maybe better during busier times.

I stayed here for two nights (on my way in and out of San Jose/ Costa Rica) and was very impressed with this hostel!

It is nestled away in a quiet and seemingly safe neighborhood, which is surprisingly just a few blocks away from a vibrant area of yummy restaurants and shops.

Pros:
Location- neighborhood, quiet and safe
Very clean
Two outlets inside each bunk
Private room options
Multiple bathrooms, some rooms have private bathrooms for the room
Large lockers for each bunk
Reading nook area with book exchange
Small outdoor area
Decent lounge and kitchen areas- couches and large fridges
May rent towels- $2.00 additional charge
Pool table
Shuttle to or from airport is available- Fredrick the driver is amazing!
Very yummy and full breakfast with fruit, cereal, toast, coffee

Cons: (really more FYIs, this place is great)
Everything additional that is offered is very expensive; water $2.00, laundry $10.00

Room 6 is very loud- if you are staying up late, this a great room! If you have an early flight, this is not.

Suggestions:
Choose rooms 1 or 2 for quiet at night
Enjoy!

Context: male solo backpacker 20-30y/o

Staff 5/5
My favorite staff for sure! Everyone is extremely helpful and cheerful, from the maids to the receptionists!

Cleanliness 5/5
Zero complaints, super clean bathrooms and beds, zero bugs whatsoever, and the maids are always keeping the kitchen clean all day!

Amenities 4/5
Hot water and big bathrooms! Nice free breakfast 730-930! Great fully equipped kitchen with many spices, and a pool table to boot!
There are ~4 bathrooms with showers, but the hostel hosts up to ~40 people when full (often full during summer) and this can leave you running around to find a vacant bathroom.
Rooms lack AC/Fan, but the weather was good in san jose when I was there in june so I couldnt complain (~23C at night)

Location 5/5
Excellent. Safest neighborhood in the city I believe, but still do be careful if you wander too far from the neighborhood at night. "AutoMercado" supermarket is just a 5 min walk towards to the main road and has everything a traveller may need (meds to shampoo, razors, food, contact lens solution, etc.).

Overall 4.5/5
Would definitely recommend. The few bathrooms mean you need to plan your showers better but everything else is top notch in this hostel, definitely a go!

I arrived late at night and was hungry. An employee asked if I wanted an egg sandwich for $5. $5 for an egg and toast! Keep in mind that this is about half the price of a nights stay and what they give away free for breakfast. I said that is too much and he asked how much it was worth to me. I said $3 and he agreed then said you can make it yourself. I said if I am paying for it, he could make it and he did.

Amazing was my first, second, and third reaction when I was led into TripOn Open House for the first time.
Having come from a not-so-great hostel the day before, I was immediately excited and comforted with the Brand New surroundings. I told Delroy, the host and owner, that I was questioning whether I had reserved the place for $5 a night or $50 a night. He assured me it was $5 a night and I smiled even wider.
I'm sure the $5 is an introductory price, because they are still working on a few things in the house. But even at $50 a night, it's a great deal.
It's located on the northeast edge of San Jose.
Slept great on the firm yet soft new dorm room bunk beds, and it was quiet all night long.
A train does run nearby during the day on weekdays, so you can hear the horn sometimes.
The two opulent showers are as hot as you want, and with towels provided, you can wash away the day's hiking grime, and tingle through the night.
When you wake up at TripOn, you are greeted with a full breakfast of succulent fruit of all kinds, toast, cereal, coffee, and eggs any way you want to make them.
The extra large kitchen and brand new refrigerator and stove, makes it a joy to prepare your own meals any time of the day.
The outdoor courtyard with its hammock and swinging chair is the perfect place to read or check emails under the stars.
Play pool on the professional pool table, or pretend you are Billy Joel at the Electronic Keyboard or the Karaoke Machine.
Lots of private, comfortable couches in various Nooks and Crannies around the house to decompress.
Lots of outlets, and more to come, for charging all your Electronics.
Right across the street from TripOn is a fun little park for throwing a frisbee or just rrolling in the grass.
Because the President of Costa Rica's house is right next door, the regular walking security guards and Police cars passing by will put your heart at ease.
An Auto Mercado large grocery store is a short eight minute walk away, and an AmPm store is even closer.
San Pedro Mall, the largest in Costa Rica, is a fifteen minute walk away.
Thanks Delroy, for putting this great TripOn experience together for us.
Fate brought me to TripOn Open House, and only fate can make me leave.

The hostel was great value. Excellent buffet breakfast with a great choice. Considering how expensive Costa Rica is this is great place to stay when you arrive in San Jose. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Helping with the details of where to get the buses for destinations. Also it is situated in a good safe area in San Jose.
I liked the communal areas where you could meet other backpackers which is the essence of a good hostel. The kitchen area was spacious and well equipped.
The dorm rooms were spacious and clean
I felt the bathroom/shower could have been much cleaner. The shower rooms near the 6 bed dorm and the 10 bed dorm were in need of repair as the other shower rooms were in better quality.
Just because you chose cheaper rooms to sleep in shouldn't mean that there is poorer quality shower/bathroom to use.

My husband and I, arrived late at night and the staff were great - they showed us to our room (mixed dorm) and when i explained that we needed an upper and lower bunk .... they asked us to wait and managed to shuffle a big group around / clean and remake a couple of bunks to accommodate our needs .....
I am not that experienced at hostel life ... but we felt that their helpfulness and willingness made our stay !!!
The breakfast the next morning had something for everyone - bread (toaster too), jam, peanut butter, fresh fruit (3 types every morning), ham, cheese, tea, coffee, milk, cereal, yogurt and pancake mix if anyone could be bothered after all the above !!!
The beds were super sturdy so felt very steady climbing the ladders / great sized lockable lockers / staff available 24 hrs (Valeria and Matteo were super friendly and Valeria even recommended some things to see / visit when we left San Jose. The kitchen is clean and well stocked with utensils and has a fridge / microwave/ cooker.
This hostel has very cool paintings on the walls in the communal areas / the friendly cleaning staff are always milling around sweeping / wiping and generally keeping everything in order .... and as there are literally 20 - 30 people arriving / leaving every couple of days we felt the place was very well kept.
So if you want value for money (the breakfast alone was worth £4 - £5) and you want to feel part of something cool and friendly ..... then we recommend this hostel with a 5 star rating - if you struggle with sharing and don't like anyone using the same bathroom / kitchen / bedroom area ..... there are plenty of more expensive options available - Pura Vida

Yes, they both can help you with tours. Just a correction, TripOn 2 is close to the airport. Its a bigger hostel with a big bar area and has a few cheaper restaurant options.

You can also contact the hostel they do offer pickup service but it's not a cheap option.. depends on your finances and if you have anyone to share the cost with.. I just didn't want to bother finding a ride to the airport on my way home.
Answer from Kayla K

The hostel offers a shuttle service to the international airport .. I believe it was around $15 US - this would definitely be the easiest option... it may be a few dollars cheaper for another shuttle or to share a cab with a group, however in my experience I would use the service that trip on organized you for ease and safety! Hope this helps.
