Just returned from Costa Rica found Don Carlos a real nice place to stay for the money. They are remodeling right now but its no big deal.We took a taxi there then rented a car the next day from Thriffy that is three blocks away. After spending two weeks on a road trip around the country we came back and spend the...

This hotel was a true dump. The room reminded me a dingy motel room in the US. It smelled bad and was dark and depressing. The entire hotel was dark and depressing, to be honest. The staff was less than friendly, not particularly helpful either. If you have to stay in San Jose, spend the extra hundred bucks to stay...

This hotel is currently under renovations! We arrived in the afternoon to the sounds of broken glass and walls being torn down. I would not recommend staying here until the renovations have been completed. The restaurant was shut down. The gift shop wasn't open either. I would feel comfortable staying here again as long as the renovations have been completed...

Stayed here for a night before going to Arenal. There were 6 of us (3 to a room). My triple was a corner and nicer than the other room, but both were big enough. The staff is good (Mauricio was our kind host) with a complementary drink when we got there and breakfast in the morning. It is right near...

We stayed at the Hotel Don Carlos twice while in Costa Rica: our first night, then our last two nights. Our first night we had a room overlooking the foyer and it was small and lacked airflow. On our return we were in a much larger room overlooking the patio and street and it was very comfortable with the typically...

The Don Carlos is a decent option for staying a night in downtown San Jose. It's conveniently located very close to most of the highlights of the city - we did a 2-hour walking tour on our own and saw everything we were interested in seeing (the Jade Museum is right across the street, and we walked to the National...

We stayed at The Hotel Don Carlos on two separate nights. Once in the middle of our Costa Rica road trip, once at the very end. For us, it was great. This isn’t the Bellagio, but, it was not one bit a disappointment. Hotel Don Carlos is a friendly unique character hotel with a huge gift shop frequented by tour...

We stayed 1 night at Don Carlos and it was fine. Clean rooms with good furniture, and nice communal area and restaurant. Not flash but does the job if you are just looking for a place to stopover in SJ

We visit Costa Rica quite often. Always hearing how wonderful Hotel Don Carlos was. We decided to stay at the hotel. Much to our sadness we did. We have always had a wonderful time in Costa Rica...until our stay here. We used the in room safe which used your room key for locking. We also made the mistake of taking...

After many recommendations on TripAdvisor and Fodor , we chose this place because of it's true Costa Rican qualities. Older, in downtown with character it was.....comfort and best of service it was not. The front desk was helpful, but we waited 2 hrs. for a small meal at dinner time (only one person waiting 6 tables and perhaps doing some...
