After reading previous reviews I had an idea of what to expect. Smaller rooms, no AC in a European style - old but newly renovated, hotel. The room was small, but well appointed. Clean and the bath was nice and big - we had zero hot water issues as other shad said was a problem. We had a lovely view...

After travelling from Australia to Costa Rica via Vegas and LA we weren´t to sure what to expect when arriving at the Gran Hotel. Lets just say looks can be deceiving and indeed the hotel is quite run down compared to the photos on the website, even to pull off the shabby chic image it portrays! The location of the...

The Gran Hotel is ideally located, right in the center of San José, which makes this hotel an ideal place to stay. It's close to several nice bars & restaurants, and right next to the National Theater. Unofrtunaltey, this hotel has probably got a glorious past, but it has lost most of its glory ! Room was dark, no A/C,...

We stayed one night at the Gran Hotel in San Jose as part of our honeymoon. We arranged transportation from and to the airport through the hotel, and was greeted by a very friendly, knowledgeable and English-speaking representative, and taken to the hotel in a clean, newer, air-conditioned van. When we arrived we were introduced to the concierge, and had...

Just as many people have said, it was noisy with the famous fans. Door could'nt be locked, bathroom and towels were not really dirty but definitely not clean. Breakfast was a troubling experience: a few toasts, some butter and honey and a glass of orange juice. From the reviews I read, I guess they've become better but I suppose they...

If your kind of hotel is an anonymous, bright, modern, state-of-the-art, 'could be anywhere' chain, then this is not the hotel for you. If like me on the other hand, you prefer a unique experience in the spectacular setting of a grand old building, then the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is perfect for you. You know the deal, some people...

Looks nice from the outside, but once you enter, you realize the rooms are tiny, beds are like rocks, there's no A/C, and the worst is the ceiling fans, which run smoothly for a few minutes, and then proceed to make loud clicking noises intermittently throughout the night. Sounds like the whole thing is going to fall on you. I...

I was very impressed with this hotel. My second floor room had an impressive view of the courtyard (although it was currently under construction, I can imagine that it's normally very pretty) and the National Theater across the street. The breakfast buffet was delicious and served in a lovely, sunny dining room on the top floor of the hotel. I...

A group of 8 of us stayed here (4 guys, 4 girls) and I really enjoyed this particular property. The location was fantastic and you could see the Teatro Nacional right from our room window. We slept with the windows open and it was a bit noisy in the morning, but that was just a part of the experience. If...

We paid more than $100 a night for a mildewy room. The room has no AC and the fan is spinning like a helicopter. If you open the windows, you could hear street vendors screaming every 30 secs. That's not it! The bed comes with tick and the restroom comes with cockroaches! Yep! You read it right! Oh yeah, the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the absence of a major first-class hotel in the country, the Constitutional Congress of the Republic of Costa Rica enacted the law number 34 on November 22, 1928, which was actually a contract subscribed on October 3, 1928, by and between the first owner of the hotel, Dr. Luis Paulino Jimenez Ortiz, and Cleto Gonzalez Viquez, President of the Republic. It granted a series of fiscal benefits to the contractor, in exchange for the construction of the hotel. There was also a provision according to which the Government was granted for twenty years the right to have at their disposal for free two apartments at the hotel for lodging foreign diplomatic representatives of extraordinary nature. Grand Hotel Costa Rica is today operated by the Elite Hotels and Resorts Costa Rica hotel chain. It is the only hotel in Costa Rica that was declared a historical and architectural monument by the government of Costa Rica. Located in the heart of the San Jose between national monuments, squares, museums and pedestrian streets, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is just a few steps away from the cultural landmarks and entertainment venues. ... more   less
