I have booked the Presidential suite for 280 US a day, thinking that it was the best in San Jose Wrong! A lobby, decorated with fake paintings ( Renoir, Marie Laurencin.....) If you are lucky, you might get a hot shower. Twice in five days,it was no water at all. The bathroom has a small neon light. The hotel needs to...

This review is tricky. The location, lobby, patio and service are all 5 star. Gorgeous, historic hotel. However, when you get to the rooms, the disappointment sets in. They were probably considered luxurious in 1920 when the hotel was built. I'm sure it's been updated since then, but everything is VERY dated and pretty cramped. None of the modern amenities...

Our stay here came at the conclusion of a wonderful vacation to La Fortuna and Monteverde. The rooms are horrible - the mildew smell kept me awake all night long - I did not sleep for one minute and would have fared better at a hostel or in the rental car! There was a pile of dust on the ceiling...

Very Friendly staff in the bar and restaurant, my room overlooked the main square and was very noisy late evening and early morning when people go off to work very early! Very good location for exploring the city. Rooms need updating and plumbing was rather erratic

Great central location. We had a comfortable stay in a small double room, looking out towards the front square, but the decor was a little dated and it felt as though the hotel was living in the glory of days gone by - when JF Kennedy stayed. The tourist office desk in the front lobby was very helpful but they...

The Hotel Costa Rica, now named el Gran Hotel Costa Rica is a mutli-story cesspool that should be avoided at all costs- I recently spent 18 days in Costa Rica, a country that I love to visit, and the worst of Costa Rica can be found at the GRANCID...dumpy rooms, cold or scalding water depending on the plumbing, noisy hallways...

The hotel is one of the oldest in the city center and is a historical building. The rooms are a bit tired but for the price its a good value. Breakfast was included in my rate and it's served on the top floor. The buffet room is not decorated nicely but the view of the city from here is nice....

The desk clerks were cranky and reluctant, especially the Front Desk Manager. The halls smelled strongly of cleaning chemicals and the room was hot and stuffy. Hot water was sporadic and one night, no water at all from the bathtub. On a Saturday 9:a.m. they loudly power sprayed the front patio, The waiters in the restaurant and at breakfast were...

We stayed there three times in July and made different experiences. Rooms were always clear and nice with having the old colonial flavour. First booking was via opodo and they could not find our reservation. So we were lucky there was vacancy. Our taxi to the airport was confirmed by the hotel, but did not show up. This brought us...

I have been to Costa Rica several times and finally spent a night in the Gran Hotel Costa Rica. This one-time jewel of San Jose hotels is feeling its age. The room price was reasonable, and the staff was friendly, but the room was just fair. It was dark and musty. A sign in the bathroom said to wait for...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the absence of a major first-class hotel in the country, the Constitutional Congress of the Republic of Costa Rica enacted the law number 34 on November 22, 1928, which was actually a contract subscribed on October 3, 1928, by and between the first owner of the hotel, Dr. Luis Paulino Jimenez Ortiz, and Cleto Gonzalez Viquez, President of the Republic. It granted a series of fiscal benefits to the contractor, in exchange for the construction of the hotel. There was also a provision according to which the Government was granted for twenty years the right to have at their disposal for free two apartments at the hotel for lodging foreign diplomatic representatives of extraordinary nature. Grand Hotel Costa Rica is today operated by the Elite Hotels and Resorts Costa Rica hotel chain. It is the only hotel in Costa Rica that was declared a historical and architectural monument by the government of Costa Rica. Located in the heart of the San Jose between national monuments, squares, museums and pedestrian streets, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is just a few steps away from the cultural landmarks and entertainment venues. ... more   less
