This hotel is decidedly tired but it does have character, infinitely preferable to these modern soulless could be anywhere in the world hotels. I found it to be comfortable and clean. I did not find it noisy, smelly or claustrophobic. Maybe I was lucky with the rooms that I stayed in on my two visits to this hotel. The staff... More

Stayed twice at this hotel the oldest hotel in San Jose and it shows found the foyer dark and drab, corridors smelly and the whole place antiquated. First time for two nights,, our room on the fourth floor above the entrance was dingy, claustrophobic, hot and noisy but a not unpleasant view. No aircon, just a ceiling fan, so had... More

I can not give 1 star only because i had a good deal with kayak.com. I payed only $60 a night but i can not understand how they think to charge $100 per night or more for this kind of rooms...old, smelling bad, noisy all day long...my room was on the 4th floor and the view was .. the elevator....up... I stayed here with my girlfriend for one night on 1st night in San Jose and 1 night was enough. We walked into a room that someone had clearly smoked in (the hotel is non smoking and the room had been cleaned but apparently the staff didn't air out the room as it STUNK of smoke). The staff was nice... More

Experience old Costa Rica in a hotel here at the Gran Hotel in downtown San Jose. Very centrally located with in a few yards of the Avenida Central, this Hotel will serve you well in San Jose. As a reflection of it's age, our room was small but the bed was large and comfortable. As with much of Costa Rica... More

1. bait and switch advertizing. offered a package with transportation to the airport but refused to honor it. 2. No hot water and no explanation. 3. very expensive coffee shop ($60 for soup and sandwich for 2 plus very poor service. 4. badly in need of renovation and new management but good location.

We ordered a martini, a bottle of wine and dinner. When the check came we paid it and thought it seemed high. The price of the martini was $33.00 dollars. When we complained and asked for an explination the waiter said it took 3 shots to fill the martini glass so we were being charged $11.00 per shot. We said,... More

Hotel is right in the middle of everything in San Jose. Restaurant was OK, it was difficult to find another option in the evenings as we had a large party in tow. Staff was very helpful and the tour operator in the lobby did a great job making arrangements and assuring that we saw as much of the surrounding countryside... More

We did not sleep here, but just had dinner and I recommend to try another restaurant and just eat here if you are desperate to find an open restaurant. The setting was nice, the historical building that hosts the hotel, but the food is not what I say eatable. We tried several items from the menu and were very disapointed... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the absence of a major first-class hotel in the country, the Constitutional Congress of the Republic of Costa Rica enacted the law number 34 on November 22, 1928, which was actually a contract subscribed on October 3, 1928, by and between the first owner of the hotel, Dr. Luis Paulino Jimenez Ortiz, and Cleto Gonzalez Viquez, President of the Republic. It granted a series of fiscal benefits to the contractor, in exchange for the construction of the hotel. There was also a provision according to which the Government was granted for twenty years the right to have at their disposal for free two apartments at the hotel for lodging foreign diplomatic representatives of extraordinary nature. Grand Hotel Costa Rica is today operated by the Elite Hotels and Resorts Costa Rica hotel chain. It is the only hotel in Costa Rica that was declared a historical and architectural monument by the government of Costa Rica. Located in the heart of the San Jose between national monuments, squares, museums and pedestrian streets, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is just a few steps away from the cultural landmarks and entertainment venues. ... more   less
