this hotel is really beautiful. It looks like something out of a 1930s movie...very rich and ornate. The location is safe and really central. The rooms are nice, there are flat screen TVs and small fridges and the beds are comfortable, but there isn't any a/c and the rooms are quite small. I did not eat at the hotel, so... More

This is a 1930s hotel in a downtown location near a theater, an old cathedral, and a plaza where many street performers entertain the crowd. They had a nice lobby bar, and a game room for the teens. We also liked the coffee bar and churro place that was in the building. On the other hand, the room was very... More

This place doesnt look like much but the room we stayed in was modern, had aircon and nice beds and even though the inconsiderate teenagers next door made a huge noise we could hardly hear it in the room. The breakfast was good and served in a dining room that is from a different era. All in all a good... More

The place has good location, nice look from outside but nasty inside. No A/C, tiny rooms, view at the indoor elevator.

Hotel lobby and building was stunning! Great Historical details and very Grand! Great Breakfast presentation on their top floor. Very exact on details. Only downfalls were the beds were a bit springy but the bedding was good quality. If you like large space make sure to request a larger room. Overall great hotel and charm!

Location is great, right in center of town, next to Gold Museum. Dining on Veranda lets you see the world go by. This is a grand old hotel and staying there is a great retro experience, back to the 30 or 40's. No air conditioning but had ceiling fan and was comfortable. Shower on 2nd day was invigorating since hot... More

Overpriced yes, in the middle of the city, yes. They have different kinds of rooms - from suites to small rooms with 2 tiny beds (I could not even fit on that bed and I am 6'1). So when booking make sure you know what kind of a room you are getting. If the windows of your room look to... More

Please keep in mind that I have not visited Costa Rica for almost ten years, (spending all my vacation time in Guatemala). The wife and I love Costa Rica and may be going back this year. Our... We booked two nights for our last days in Costa Rica before flying back home. I'm sure I could have gotten a nicer place for less money. The room was small and dark and hot. In order to cool off you had to open the window, but that made the loud noises of the courtyard disturbing us from getting good... More

Carlos is a homophobe! I will explain that later. Checking in I saw the rate wasn't the same as I reserved online, but didn't say anything because it wasn't much more and it seemed nice enough. That should been the first warning. I get to my room and there is no power. They say they will have it fixed soon.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the absence of a major first-class hotel in the country, the Constitutional Congress of the Republic of Costa Rica enacted the law number 34 on November 22, 1928, which was actually a contract subscribed on October 3, 1928, by and between the first owner of the hotel, Dr. Luis Paulino Jimenez Ortiz, and Cleto Gonzalez Viquez, President of the Republic. It granted a series of fiscal benefits to the contractor, in exchange for the construction of the hotel. There was also a provision according to which the Government was granted for twenty years the right to have at their disposal for free two apartments at the hotel for lodging foreign diplomatic representatives of extraordinary nature. Grand Hotel Costa Rica is today operated by the Elite Hotels and Resorts Costa Rica hotel chain. It is the only hotel in Costa Rica that was declared a historical and architectural monument by the government of Costa Rica. Located in the heart of the San Jose between national monuments, squares, museums and pedestrian streets, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is just a few steps away from the cultural landmarks and entertainment venues. ... more   less
