The hotel is centrally located, and the rooms are sparse but clean. The staff was friendly, and we had no issues whatsoever. I would recommend reading the other reviews regarding which rooms to book; we followed that guidance, and it worked out for us.

Such friendly staff. They were very helpful in getting rid of our rental car, we no longer needed it and driving around San Jose to find the drop-off spot was harrowing! The hotel is adjacent to a pedestrian plaza, the Gold Museum and fabulous shopping and restaurants.

The hotel has a charm and is of another era. The rooms were clean and comfortable and not very expensive. It is situated in the centre of the city and is within walking distance to many of the tourist venues, shops and restaurants.

Stayed in this hotel one night before launching on a tour of the country. It was comfortable with the elegance of a historic hotel. Yes, it was old but the room was clean and the staff friendly. Great location near several landmarks and a bustling shopping area. Try to get a room on the outer part of the building though....

From the moment of arrival to way after departure, the experience of this hotel was appalling. Reception staff were rude & unhelpful, hotel was tired and worn with frayed carpets in the room corridors which are quite probably are a trip hazard, rooms are by far the worst of all those we stayed in during our trip to Costa Rica...

The hotel is very well located in downtown San Jose a ton of museums and restaurants are nearby. But the rooms are tiny with bathrooms that are horrible and dark. The property would be fantastic with an refurbishment (especially with the location and historical significance of the hotel) Service in the restaurant is very poor. Breakfast on the top floor...

You will either love this hotel or hate it. If you like chain hotels that are pristine but have no personality then this hotel is definitely not for you. I have stayed in this hotel twice, once with my 19 year old daughter and then on my own (I'm a 50 year old lady). The hotel was obviously exquisite in...

The Grand Hotel is in an ideal location, the centre of town. From the outside looks likes a beautiful building. It is classed as a 4 star hotel but as you enter the stars sadly fall away. The one saving grace is the dining room, it takes you back to the 1930's, back to it's heyday. This is the hotel...

I chose this hotel because of the location. It is super convenient to walk to many tourist attractions in San Jose; this made it a great choice of hotel for me. If you are looking for a hotel with any sort of luxury, this is not it. We had a place in the hotel bathroom for a blow dryer, but...

A Lovely tropical entrance hall and outside/Inside restaurant with piano right in heart of san José was what attracted us to this hotel. But thats where the fun ended. A dated and scruffy decor, tired and oncomfortable furnishings (bed and chair), dingy windows. No working fridge, WiFi or bath in what was supposed to be a superior room. The hotel...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In the absence of a major first-class hotel in the country, the Constitutional Congress of the Republic of Costa Rica enacted the law number 34 on November 22, 1928, which was actually a contract subscribed on October 3, 1928, by and between the first owner of the hotel, Dr. Luis Paulino Jimenez Ortiz, and Cleto Gonzalez Viquez, President of the Republic. It granted a series of fiscal benefits to the contractor, in exchange for the construction of the hotel. There was also a provision according to which the Government was granted for twenty years the right to have at their disposal for free two apartments at the hotel for lodging foreign diplomatic representatives of extraordinary nature. Grand Hotel Costa Rica is today operated by the Elite Hotels and Resorts Costa Rica hotel chain. It is the only hotel in Costa Rica that was declared a historical and architectural monument by the government of Costa Rica. Located in the heart of the San Jose between national monuments, squares, museums and pedestrian streets, the Gran Hotel Costa Rica is just a few steps away from the cultural landmarks and entertainment venues. ... more   less
