We had a short stay of 4 nights at the hotel, in a 3 person room. We've had a good global experience as the personel was very nice. Ideally located nearby the city center though if you like walking take a pair of good shoes. 🙂 The tenants of the place are really charming and professional.

I wish that I had found this hotel first! I stayed here for 3 days with my mother at the end of a 2 week dental tourism vacation in Costa Rica. She had some work done in San Jose, and we wanted a change of scenery for our last 3 days, and chose Out of Bounds based on reviews. It was gorgeous! So clean and very much a boutique hotel. The staff was amazing (Fernando is the manager, and he always has a kind smile, and good advice:) The room that we had was on the second level, it had vaulted ceilings and AMAZING VIEWS Of San Jose, and surrounding volcanoes. I sat for hours just gazing at the view. I was so sad that we had not stayed here for our entire trip!!! I will most definitely be returning here!! I took a zillion pictures of the view:) I am a designer, and very picky about comfort and aesthetics, and this room was perfect. The beds were SO COMFORTABLE, with the fluffiest pillows:) The breakfast was good also, and the staff were very accommodating. I will be recommending this hotel to anyone traveling to Costa Rica, especially for an extended stay in the San Jose area. The wifi was more solid than anywhere else I've stayed in Costa Rica! I was able to watch movies and do work etc. etc. without any interruption. A word of advice, be sure to call ahead and ask for the specific address to share with your taxi driver, as it is a secure location, and can be hard to find if you don't know what you are looking for:)

We stayed for 5 nights during the rainy season (but missed the rain). We practically had the place to ourselves. Matteo picked us up from the airport and the breakfast was always on time and delicious. The tours were amazing. We booked two of them before we got there and for about 100/each, they were worth it.
Tour 1: Zip lining, white water rafting, and lunch- amazing price! The zip line alone is worth the money. The white water rafting is not the best, but it is good enough.
Tour 2: Arenal Volcano and Toscani spa waterfall- We weren't able to see the volcano, but the hot springs spa was the most amazing thing... The water was heated and there were many places to get lost in the rainforest. Monkeys were everywhere.
Tour 3- Catamaran boat ride to Turtle island- The boat was sooo nice... and we ended up playing soccer with the locals on the beach. The beach isn't huge, but it is secluded and beautiful. Lunch under the palm trees with steel drums was awesome. We saw a wild pig, parrot, etc.
The only negatives are that there really wasn't too many local options for food and it's hard to get around to see the nightlife... You mainly are too tired from getting up early for tours anyway. San Jose was interesting, but not my favorite day. Ricardo was awesome haha! The taxis are cheap and wayyy cleaner than US taxis. One day we did get up early for a tour and could get the gate open. No one was there and we had to wake the family up to open the gate... It was stressful because we didn't want to miss our tour, nor did we want to wake up a sleeping family.

The parking is limited and pretty steep.
The hotel is okay and the staff is nice. The view is beautiful!
The rooms in the hotel are simple but fine, the beds are comfortable.
The breakfast was okay, the juice wasn’t fresh.

I've been coming to Out of Bounds Boutique Hotel for YEARS. More times than I have actually reviewed it in fact. This was my first time visiting the hotel since Meranda and Matteo sold their hotel and business. And gotta be honest... the experience here is not the same.. The hotel is basically the same...rooms are the same, amenities are basically the same, but the warmth and charm isn't there anymore.
The breakfast area has been moved to what used to be the living room in M&M's on-site house. This is nice because it provides more space, however I miss the views from the 2nd floor seating area. They have also done away with the glass of juice in the morning...If you want a cold drink in the morning, all they have available is water.
The website has not been updated AT ALL since M&M sold the business. Its been around 2 years...time to update that! The room costs are about the same, and the rooms look about the same too. There is definitely some updating/remodeling that needs to happen though...the rooms are starting to look a bit shabby. There was mold on the ceiling of my bathroom, the shower controls were broken which made taking a shower a bit dicey, and mosquitoes were getting in through the cracks in the door (not great if you are worried about ZIKA). In our room, what I call the "mini-kitchen room", which has utensils, bowls, glasses and a mini-cooktop...they replaced the decent size mini-fridge with a much tinier mini-fridge. It rather ruins the point of having a room you can cook your own food in,if the fridge is so small that you can't store more than a little bit of food at a time. Beds are still comfy. Breakfast is still good. But the hotel looks a bit faded, and a bit more run-down than it did in previous years. The signs outside the hotel are completely faded....our taxi driver had a rather hard time finding the hotel...if we hadn't told him where exactly it was or if it had been nighttime, he wouldn't have seen it.
I think the biggest thing lacking though was the lack of warmth from the owners/front desk people. The front desk person who checked us in was cold and perfunctory. No "Hello, welcome to our hotel", just "fill out these forms". He helped us to our room and then we didn't see him until it was time to check out. Also, office hours appear to be very limited, despite what is posted. Twice we went looking for an on-site manager, and never saw a soul. Rang the doorbell twice, and no one answered. So not sure if there is an on-site manager at all times or not. I also sent them an email requesting availability on rooms, and never received a response back. I ended up booking through Expedia, I think, just to guarantee I'd get a room.
So overall the experience was just ok. I think I'll be looking for a different place to stay on my next visit, which saddens me because Out of Bounds was my home away from home when I was in San Jose/Escazu. I think this has definitely slipped from a "boutique hotel" B&B experience, to just a small hotel that provides a breakfast in the morning. Its still an ok hotel, but its not as fantastic as it used to be in years past.

Arranged through the hotel to have a taxi waiting at the airport. Seems the taxi had an "accident" and was advised to grab a cab at the airport.
Arrived at the hotel. Opened the door and slammed with a real nasty musty smell. The air conditioner was leaking onto a bed. Do they sell Scrubbing Bubbles in Costa Rica? If not I'm gonna make a mint! Bathroom was pretty grungy. The "kitchen" was nasty...good thing am/pm is down the street and sells plastic utensils.
WiFi.....sometimes.
Here's the real reason for my scathing review:
Went out for dinner left a room light and balcony lights on. Came back to total darkness. Someone entered my room shut off the lights, shut off the a/c ... WAIT ON THIS...took a wizz in the toilet and didn't even flush!

Response from Hotel-Out-of-Bounds, Front Office Manager at Out of Bounds Hotel
Responded Aug 14, 2015
Good afternoon, Regarding the shuttle pickup at the airport: We regret the fact that the requested transport service was delayed, as we of course regret the fact that our driver was involved in a potentially very dangerous accident, and therefore, was unable to make it to you at the appointed time. Luckily, there is are taxis available at the airport with comparable pricing that were able to get you to our hotel without delay. Regarding the Wifi: We have established the Wi-fi of 5 Megabytes because strong winds in these mountains have deactivated the lines of internet in the past. But thanks to our company, luckily we have managed to stabilize our internet connection, thus continuously providing the internet stability that our clients deserve to the best of our ability considering the elements. Regarding the lights being turned off in your room: The lights and air conditioners in our hotel have an automatic shutdown system with motion sensors for customers who have forgotten to turn off air their air conditioners and lights while they are not actually inside their room. The reason that we do this is because of our commitment to preserve resources and protect our environment. Therefore, you will realize that no one entered your room while you were away to turn off your lights. Regarding the air conditioning, musty smell, and general cleanliness of your room: At the hotel, we strive to maintain your comfort. We have never had complaints of this nature regarding our air conditioning or cleanliness. We are wondering if perhaps this review is directed at another hotel, and was directed at Boutique Hotel Out of Bounds accidentally? If you did experience any discomfort for any reason, as per our policy, we encourage guests to report any kind of issues regarding cleanliness, maintenance, or discomfort immediately to the management. The management is on call virtually 24 hours a day to assist our guests, and to ensure a beautiful and comfortable stay. We do not understand why you failed to come to our management and address these issues when you initially encountered them, instead of continuing to extend your stay for three nights without addressing them. During your stay, our staff continuously checked with you to ensure that your stay with us was enjoyable. In response, you only had positive things to stay while you were staying with us. We have come under new ownership in the last seven months, and since then, we have had virtually all extremely positive reviews. This review is so strikingly out of line from the rest of our clients' experiences that it almost seems diferent. It has also been noted that all of the other reviews that you have written on this site are extremely negative, as though you are purposefully slandering hotels. So regarding the comments that you have left about your experience at our hotel, my responsibility is to assess your comments, and respond to your issues. It is also my responsibility to make sure that our future clients have all of the facts, and can see the truth about the wonderful experience that our hotel will offer them. We regret that you appear to have had some misunderstandings at our hotel concerning the lights, etc. We also regret that you did not find your stay at our hotel entirely enjoyable, as the rest of our clients have (As proven by our excellent record and stellar reviews.) We also regret that you have not had good experiences at other hotels in Costa Rica. We read every review on this site. Our clients are our priority. The cleanliness of our hotel and the comfort of our guests are of utmost importance to us. We would like to thank you for your three nights stay with us at Out of Bounds Hotel. We also hope that in the future, you find hotel experiences that you may find cause to write positive reviews for, instead of very negative ones. Kind regards, Fernando

1. Sweeping, panoramic view of the valley.
2. Only has 5 rooms and are usually boked long term. I myself booked for 4 nights but had to spend my first 2 nights in another hotel due to overbooking. Nevertheless, they facilitated everything and I had a wonderful stay at the other hotel.
3. This is a bed and breakfast place, and not a big hotel, as far as I'm concerned the attention and service they provide ranks high among other BnB that I had stayed.
4. The place has limited breakfast choices though, but they have a wide selection of tea and unlimited coffee.
5. Close to restaurants, bust stops (just outside the property). centro commercial La Paco and Distrito Cuatro is just 2 minutes drive.
6. Secure. Although they don't have a safe (at least in the room that I'm in). The property is secure.
7. Again, sweeping panoramic view of the valley.
All in all I enjoyed my stay.

I spent 10 enjoyable days at Out Of Bounds Hotel. The View from my room, which had a kitchinette, was awesome. I loved the cool mountain breeze which made the AC unnecessary. Fernando was not just a manager, but came across as a really great host and friend. As a non- spanish speaker, the staff was very accomodating, and the included breakfast was enjoyable.
The convenience to local transportation should not be overlooked, the bus stop is literally outside the entrance, about 350 to 500 colones, and you are good to travel around the San Jose area. 500 colones is roughly equivalent to 1 us dollar. Overall, I had a great experience. Thanks again, to Fernando and staff.

Fernando and his staff were absolutely charming, profess iona and down to earth. They took care of us like we were family & had lots of patience, as we don't speak Spanish that well.
I was in Escazu for dental implant surgery and the hotel staff was great about cooking soft meals for my breakfasts and bringing me ice packs to keep down my swollen cheeks.
We are 100% happy with our decision to stay at Hotel Out of Bounds.

I found the owners Matteo and Meranda exceptional in their hospitality, they made me feel like i was family and not request was too much. It was a relaxing worry free stay with one of the best sleeps i have ever had in the area. I found the Hotel clean and comfy and will definately return over and over again. A family emergency back home necessitated an early return on my trip but Matte and Meranda went out of their way to help with the arrangements and transportation requirements. Something you won't get from another resort.
Matte and Mer thanks so much and see you when i come back you can count on me coming back.

Hi there,
Hoping you are fine.
The shuttle service cost $25 usd and it has 12 km of distance.
Regards,
I would contact the inn and make arrangements with them. I don't know what time your ferry leaves, but it is a ways to the coast and you better make more time to catch your ferry. I would arrive at least 2 days before. we had complimentary shuttle service from the Dental Clinic. But one thing for sure is there are about 100 taxi drivers at the exit. I would expect it to cost around $20 US.
Hi there, the rate for these dates is %75 per night breakfast included and sales taxes,we are at 800 mts to Multicomplex Escazu, and 1 block to Denta Vac Clinic san Rafael Escazu.
Regards,
Yes, we have this service!
