Posada El Quijote is a Spanish colonial inn set against a backdrop of spectacular views of Costa Rica's central valley and the city of San Jose.Situated atop the first hill 3.5 miles from the city center, Posada El Quijote is far enough to be in a comfortable country setting, free from the congestion and noise of the capital, but close enough to enjoy easy access to the city and its facilities. The recently refurbished hotel, with a history dating back to 1994, offers an alternative to the large hotel chains that have recently established themselves in the area; Large enough to accommodate groups, but small enough to offer a very homely, relaxed and personal atmosphere. The staff (and onsite owners) are always prepared to provide their best to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Exceeded our expectations! Owner treats everyone like family and was helpful and very kind. The infinity pool overlooks gorgeous views of San Jose with plenty of outdoor seating. Common areas inside are comfy and well decorated with plenty of spots to sit and relax…same with breakfast area(and the included breakfast had multiple options and are booked to order and large portions). Our room was spotless and lovely with pretty views of the garden, pool, and of downtown San Jose off in the distance below (views of the city were especially pretty at night). My husband and I travel often and rate this stay as a 10-10! We will not hesitate to return again!!

Location / Security About 40 minutes from the airport with normal traffic, out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the city, feels like an oasis, gated property with amazing service by Alcides, stunning view of the city both day and night, clear or cloudy. Nothing within walking distance really but plenty of local places to go by taxi or by your own car
Amenities Rooms are comfortable and clean, amazing pool, grounds are beautiful with trees, flowers, birds, hummingbirds, etc... There are multiple cats on the grounds, somewhat friendly, we were ok with it but if you're not down with cats, maybe not a good choice, plenty of safe parking if you rented a car, Alcides the on site manager was incredible, super friendly, gave us great suggestions and tips and always greeted us with a smile, breakfast is simple but delicious and filling, the property itself is so comfortable, it really felt like home away from home. We stayed here at the beginning and end of our trip. I'd likely stay again if and when we return to Costa Rica.

After doing an "Intrepid Travel" tour in Costa Rica, with dodgy (inflated priced) substandard accommodation, this was a simply wonderful place to stay at for three days at the end!
It is just so lovely: like being in a person's private mansion, with delightful lounges and terraces etc! Great views over the city and lovely staff too. Lovely rooms and great beds! Extremely good value for money (actually the cheapest I had had in Costa Rica). Thoroughly recommendable!

We had a very good experience at this hotel! It was nice and with a very service minded staff! We had been trough a terrible fire accident where we lost all our clothes so they offered us to wash our clothes for free - the little we had gotten. We also lost our key and they handled that professionally and kindly! The time we had to check-out was in the middle of the night so no transportation available so they offered to get us to the airport for a reasonable payment. We are very happy about our time there and the service and help they offered made it all so much easier and nicer! I will definitely recommend this place ! Intimate and quiet as well with a small pool and some games and books available if you feel like it!

I really loved my stay at Posada el Quijote. It was my final night in Costa Rica before catching my flight back home and it was a brilliant place to relax and rest before the long journey. Fernando was really helpful and friendly, as was the other gentleman on reception in the evening.
The pool has a brilliant view of San José, and being that bit higher up, there was a lovely breeze so it was a nice temperature for sunbathing. It was a 12 minute walk to a Fresh Market when I wanted to pop out for lunch and get supplies. The breakfast included had a range of options including gluten-free pancakes!
There's a lovely dog called Perla on-site as well as seven cats. It felt like a nice homely place to stay.
The pool could do with a little bit of TLC, as it needed a bit of fixing and cleaning in places, but it did the job for me as a final place to stay in Costa Rica.

If you like cats this is the place for you. If on the other hand you are allergic to cats you might want to consider another place to stay. First of all, the other reviews are spot on. The staff is friendly and attentive and the view from of the city is beautiful. It is a cozy place and is well secured inside a gated walled area. Our room number 26 was large and clean. The bed was comfortable as well. All in all, it is good value for the hundred dollars a night. But again, while we don’t dislike cats in general, both my wife and I are allergic to them. The resident cat has the run of the house and rooms to include our room which smelled of cat dander. We had to keep escorting the cat out of our room whenever we came and went as it had access thru the broken screen on the door leading to the back deck. In any event, we both had itchy eyes and headaches during our two day stay. Regrettably because of the cat, we will not stay there again on future visits to the area. CWH

I recently stayed at Posada El Quijote, for ten days! It is heaven on earth and I hope to return next winter. This year was my third visit and it is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. Flights are cheap, and this year, It cost me about $700 for ten days, breakfasts, simple dinners, wifi, and a free washer and dryer. Couldn't do better than that! The city of San Jose isn't much but there are some great restaurants, my favorite is 11.47. if you want to shop there is a huge mall nearby. The Posada sits on a hill overlooking the city with palm trees swaying during the day and the city's lights sparkling at night. It has a great outdoor pool. The rooms are clean, comfy and serviceable, but the large living room has comfy chairs and sofas and that is where I like to sit. Trips to the jungle or beaches are easy to get, the owner Bjorn is very knowledgeable and witty and Alcides and Ivan who run the place with him are the sweetest most helpful people you could ever hope to meet.

...when we are welcomed by Iban and Al's smile as soon as they see that we are back, again, for the x-time. At our first San Jose visit, accidentially we found this small, cosy, old colonial style build hotel. From the minute we entered we felt at home, not only all we need is presented without additional costs or nerving staff. En contraire. Wlan, breakfast, spacious rooms with my own bathroom and so on..it is all a given.,,..Swiming in the pool after an exciting, hectic day at Big City Life San Jose, calming down, soothing, melting into the short but colourful picturesque sunset presented to us from wherever we stand swim or lay at the Posada. The 2 staff members Al and Iban are descrete, still, whatever we ask or wish for is easy handled by either one of them with a smile. Love it here. We will come to stay here whenever we are in San Jose. For travelling to and from Costa Rica la Posada is the best start and ending, the smoothest port entering or leaving La Pura Vida.

For my family‘s Christmas vacation, I had booked their best room via their own homepage already in January. When I contacted them in mid-December to let them know about our arrival time, I learnt by accident that they had given our room to someone else. They blamed the booking system (their own one…) but were not ready to correct the mistake although they admitted that the new reservation had reached them several months after ours. Instead they offered us a downgrade to their least attractive, simplest room. Well, mistakes can always happen, but these guys just didn’t bother, they did not even apologize. Very disappointing.

Response from Bjorn Hem, Owner at Posada El Quijote
Responded Jan 2, 2022
Please note this guest did not stay at the hotel. The reservation was cancelled prior to arrival. Thank you for your review. I deeply apologise for this experience. I have spoken with the staff to understand what happened in this case. Unfortunately there seems to have been a misunderstanding among our staff (in part linked to training of new staff at the time), however in any case, this case should have been escalated to me, and we should have offered you a better solution. We have gone through the case with the staff to make sure this does not happen again. We also have a more robust reservation system now that should help avoid this type of situations. Please note though that we did not offer you are cheapest/least attractive room, it was another of our rooms with more space (but with less view); which we offered at our lowest rate (in order to compensate you for the inconvenience). Again; I apologise for what happened, and hope you have a great stay in Costa Rica. And please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can help you with.

Would've given this place a higher rating if it wasn't for the bad experience we had on our last day. There was a miscommunication on breakfast times from the staff, although they made it seem it was our fault and like we were crazy. The bald guy that sits in the front has a horrible attitude and definitely gives off the vibe that he just doesn't want to be there. The way he treated us and spoke to us on the last day of our stay proves he should not be in hospitality/service and is the main reason for my low rating. The saving grace were the sweet ladies in the kitchen that went out of their way to ensure we left to the airport fed and tried their best to ammend the situation.
Overall, location is decent and for the price it makes sense. Place is outdated and there were lots of little bugs crawling in our room, including spiders. Breakfast is good but I hope after this incident they fire that bald guy and make some changes.
