I visited Blue Osa for a one week yoga retreat. The staff was amazing- attentive, thoughtful and helpful. The food was delicious and fresh. I looked so forward to my morning granola and fruit. Their homemade hot fruit or ginger tea was available all day and amazing as well. The rooms were beautiful and beds amazingly comfortable The grounds are meticulously tended, gorgeousness all around.

Blue Osa exceeded all expectations! The staff, the grounds, the views, the animals, and the remote atmosphere were amazing. I traveled solo for the first time in years and it was the perfect week of rest and adventure, of quiet and connection. Thank you to the team for making it a special, unforgettable week.

We spent 5 days at Blue Osa in August. While there was a lot to like about it there were also a number of negatives. Positives; Staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The location is gorgeous. The food was incredible all week. While the bulk is vegetarian, for someone who is not a vegetarian, I enjoyed almost very meal. The chef was fantastic. The on-site yoga instructors were great and classes were enjoyable. Negatives: It is remote. You almost have to take a domestic flight in to the peninsula so prepare when planning. From San Jose there was one flight a day to Puerto Jimenez For the price, the room accommodations were a little less than ideal. The rooms are nice but could use some updating. It is off grid, so power is limited. You have a large fan in your room. They advise everyone to limit showers to 2 minutes. We had an issue partway through the week where all running water was off for a couple hours. We had some issues with our meals when we did excursions. A couple times the excursions had us away when meals were served. We had to ask multiple times if we could get food, or if some could be set aside for us so we weren’t constantly missing meals (that we paid for). Sometimes it was arranged, most times it wasn’t. This should have not even been an issue since excursions are part of the stay. The biggest issues we had were around communication and scheduling. There was a medium sized yoga group there the week we were. We booked early and were not aware. From the first yoga class the night we got there, things seemed odd and then we found out there was a full group having a retreat. There was not much delineation between the group and the rest of us, or as some from the group called us, “the misfits”. Admittedly we just decided to avoid the group throughout the week and do our own thing, but meals tended to be loud and obnoxious since it’s a shared area. Our room was also located near the pool, so they would often gather there and carry on loudly as well. This was not anticipated for a yoga retreat and often interrupted the quiet/relaxation. Often they would not observe the quiet time in the mornings. The last night was the worst when they had a karaoke session in the eating area. It was so loud that we could hear them over the movie we were watching in our room, across the resort. Much of this is because it is a small, intimate resort so when you have a larger group, it’s easy for them to just kind of take over, like they did the week we were at Blue Osa. The staff did notice after a couple days and offered classes in the afternoon for those outside of the other group. It would have been good for the staff to clearly delineate classes/ times, etc between the group and the rest of the customers. We did not necessarily sign up to be part of a yoga training/retreat. It was never actually mentioned by the staff and we just had to figure it out ourselves. Overall it was a nice week in a decent resort with a gorgeous location. Staff were super friendly, food was great but we left feeling less than thrilled. Would probably not return as there are many yoga places in Costa Rica, and some that we have gone to previously that we enjoyed more.

Response from Blue Osa Office, Owner at Blue Osa Yoga Retreat and Spa
Responded 3 weeks ago
Dear Jeremy, We appreciate your feedback which is very important for us. Guest comments and perspectives always help us improve. Thank you for expressing your praise and for sharing your experience with the friendly staff, great location, food, onsite Yoga instructors, and yoga classes. Please allow us to put a few of your comments in perspective. Per your comment about us being remote, we are a remote, yoga retreat, which is, one of the big selling points of coming to Blue Osa. People come to the Osa Peninsula because of its remoteness, and it is also one of the crown jewels of the world in terms of nature and biodiversity. Blue Osa is located in a remote part of Costa Rica. Guests have the opportunity to fly to the Osa Peninsula or to drive from San Jose. There are several daily flights from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez. Once you arrive in San Jose, Costa Rica, it is straightforward to get to us. (The capital.) We take pride in being an eco-resort leaving the smallest possible footprint. The practice of yoga instructs that we live more consciously and show tremendous respect to the earth and to our fellow humans. We aim to provide our guests with eco-friendly hospitality while protecting our breathtaking environment. Another aim is to teach our guests that off-grid living is possible. A visit to Blue Osa is an immersion into nature, and we pray that future generations will be able to enjoy this pristine environment because of the care our guests and we give it. Regarding the rooms, all rooms are equipped with a high-powered and eco-friendly ceiling fan, which most guests want to turn off at night because of the cool air provided by the fan. Additionally, we are currently renovating 4 of our rooms and installing AC in them. (The rooms will be available on September 23, 2022.) We are not shy about asking our guests to limit water usage. We have this clearly stated on our website and in preparational material we send out before our guests arrive. Including the check-in form you signed. Water is not an infinite resource. Water scarcity is a recognized global problem, with 97% of the water in the world salt water, around 2.1% in polar ice caps, meaning less than 1% is available as fresh water for human consumption! Due to the water scarcity and difficulty in collecting it, we are highly conscious of our water usage at Blue Osa. The water at Blue Osa comes from two wells. (Our water has been tested and is safe to drink.) Because water is precious, we ask our guests to be mindful of their water consumption while visiting Blue Osa. For example, when taking showers, we ask that our guests take two-minute showers, as a considerable amount of water is used during showers. Most standard showers give 2.5 gallons of water a minute. (Our shower heads give off 1.5 gallons of water a minute.) By just reducing the length of your shower by a few minutes, you will literally save GALLONS of water! Blue Osa aims to raise our guests' consciousness regarding consumption and how much we take from the earth. We are sad to see that you were not happy about this endeavor. Blue Osa Retreat often has yoga retreats throughout the year. An individual guest can join a group or come on a solo trip. Our web page lists all of the upcoming retreats at Blue Osa. Most of our guests enjoy mingling with other Blue Osa residents or guests taking part in a retreat or in a training. And if they don't, we offer several quiet spaces throughout our big property, including a 3-mile stretch of secluded jungle beach. The group you are referring to was a small one of 9 people. This group also had two world-renowned and experienced yoga teachers, one of whom was a senior yoga teacher trainer. We never knew that you were unhappy and did not want to enjoy learning from a prestigious teacher. Had we known sooner, we would have been more than happy to work on accommodating you with another yoga class and teacher. Additionally, our customer staff came to you several times to check how you were doing and were never informed that you were not pleased about the yoga being offered. In fairness to our staff, we can not give service to people who do not communicate with us. Even though we practice yoga, non of us have mastered the art of reading minds. 😁 In regards to missing lunch, we are sorry, but we really don't know what happened. When a person goes for a tour that overlaps a meal, we always ask the guest if they would like us to save them lunch. More often than not, many guests prefer to eat out for lunch. We are sorry if you felt confused or neglected. Lastly, you commented on the noise and Karaoke. We ask all of our guests to practice quiet time starting at 9:00 pm. Karaoke night was an activity offered during your week and ended at 8:25 pm, well before quiet time started. Again, we are sorry to hear that this joyous 45-minute community activity was a burden to you. Thank you very much for your feedback. We constantly work hard to improve our customer service and customer satisfaction. Henry

Wow, where do I even begin? Blue Osa is a very special place. The land is stunning and so vibrant with life. The Blue Osa staff is kind, caring, loving, and so helpful. The food is absolutely incredible and made with so much love that you can taste it! The excursions that are offered are worth every penny! I had the unlimited juice+smoothie package which was such a great addition to the already wonderful food. There are friendly dogs and cats on the property... I mean what more could you want? I attended the month-long 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training and was pleased with the entire experience. Yogi Aaron and Karina are incredible teachers and leaders who truly put their heart and soul into the entire training. I feel immense gratitude for my experience at Blue Osa. I would recommend Blue Osa to anyone, not just those looking to expand their yoga studies! Gracias (:

I received amazing service you will be taken care of beautifully. My room was clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated. The location is amazing while walking on the beach, which is accessed directly from the property, I daily saw beautiful parrots and other wildlife. The amenities include a spa that has 5 star service, a beautiful pool, amazing gardens, and the chef prepares incredible, tasteful and healthy meals. I love the caring staff and the feeling that my needs are important to them. I have travelled all over the world and the only location I have revisited is this property. It is a magical place.

I love EVERYTHING about Blue Osa! I recently completed my 300hr ytt training and it was absolutely magical and transformational. The trainings always exceeds my expectations. This training teaches the authentic Heart of Yoga and about stability of the body and mind through innovations like AYAMA (Applied Yoga Anatomy and Muscle Activation created by Yogi Aaron)! I love blue osa, the school and my teachers. Which is why I’ve returned 3 times. The food is absolutely out of this world too. I have Celiac disease and they are always so wonderful to prepare meals that are gluten free and delicious. The staff go above and beyond during your stay. I highly recommend staying at Blue Osa for a getaway and yoga training!!

I attended the yoga teacher training during the summer of 2022. The training was very beneficial. It was well-rounded and really prepared me to teach in a holistic manner. The location and facility on the Peninsula de Osa was amazing. I appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into everything at Blue Osa. There was a flow and consistency that was very comfortable. All the people who work at Blue Osa are amazing! They are competent and friendly. They go above and beyond to be of assistance. There was extreme attention to detail from artwork to flooring to lighting to ventilation to allowing space for people to come undone, then to have them rejuvenate. Thanks to all the people at Blue Osa for making the in-person experience so pleasurable.

Blue Osa will transform you. The yoga teacher training introduced me to people from all over the world who came as strangers, but left not only equipped with the best education, we also had become soul mates. The food, the accommodations, the staff, the jungle and the people who choose to come here should not be missed!

I treated myself and stayed for almost two weeks at the Blue Osa and felt like a new person when I left. The nature in and around the retreat, the morning silence, the slow pace, the super nice and attentive staff and volunteers all contributed to me having a truly wonderful experience. My room was well kept and very clean, the food was delicious and the yoga was gentle and loving. And the spa treatments were a dream! Thank you to everyone who made my time at the Blue Osa so nice.
