The Gaia Hotel & Nature Reserve offers a mixed bag of experiences. While the spacious rooms offer remarkable views, some travelers point out that they could benefit from a refresh in decor and comfort. Luxurious amenities such as personal concierge service and unique wildlife encounters are highly regarded, but guests have called out the pool area for improvement.
The hotel's cleanliness is universally applauded, contributing to the overall luxurious feel. Although service receives high marks for attentive and professional staff, opinions on value and atmosphere are divided, with concerns about the price point and a need for an atmosphere update. Its enviable location, however, garners unanimous praise for its balance of seclusion and access to local attractions.

Detailed Reviews
Staying at Gaia Reserve made my trip to Manuel Antonio extraordinary. The property is close to Quepos and the park, a short courtesy shuttle ride away, but it is so serene it really feels away from it all in the best possible way. It literally is above it all, situated as it is at a nice elevation that offers panoramic vistas. The property has modern, comfortable finishes that feel very private, with nice common spaces: great view from the dining room, and, cleverly terraced pools with waterfall features so that each one feels intimate – even now during high season with a full house, the pools were each quiet and only had a few people at a time in the pool or in the chaise lounges next to the pools. There is abundant shade for those of us who are less sun-seeking including an awing over one of the pool bars, and comfortable reclining floating lounges replete with cupholders. Every day at 3:30 there’s a guided walk through the reserve inside the property featuring the macaw reserve, it is worth participating at 3:30. The spa was fantastic – highly recommend the Thai massage and the hydro treatments, which I haven’t ever liked before but the engineering of their water feature was unique and more comfortable than others I’ve tried in past. Similarly, the shower in the room was the most versatile I’ve ever had a hotel and has probably inspired some home renovations. Must have been the same engineer/supplier as the spa hydro components! Food was very nice, especially the tuna. IMHO Gaia’s best feature was that the place is very accommodating for those of us traveling with furry friends; I was accompanied by my dog and she was treated with as much courtesy as I was, which was considerable. I found the staff all very professional from the prompt response to an important housekeeping request at 8pm (*NOT* related to my dog in case anyone was inaccurately connecting those dots…I have visions of people afraid of dogs reading my words about it being dog-friendly and freaking out – fear not the staff is careful to make sure dogs behave and are segregated from genpop and dogs are not allowed in common areas). But I digress, I wanted to continue complimenting the operations and professionalism and that includes the proactive assistance of the concierge, spa staff, and the wait staff and bartenders remembered and anticipated my likes and dislikes even on a very short stay. This was one of my favorite hotel stays over decades of travel – top 3 of all time. Simply fantastic – highly recommend Gaia it will elevate your trip to Manuel Antonio as it did mine.

We stayed at the Gaia resort for four nights and enjoyed every minute of it, The rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated. The resort itself is exclusive with only 20 accommodations. The hotel is on the top of a hill ie it is not really possible to walk from there but the hotel has a transfer service which is very reliable and always available. The restaurant not only serves fantastic food but has one of the best views in Manuel Antonio. We also used the spa and got great service, All the hotel staff are outstanding, very friendly and attentive. The arrangements we asked for were top-notch and very well organized, This is a great place for everybody who wants quiet and tranquility after exploring the beautiful Manuel Antonio area.

We stayed at this small (20 or so rooms) hotel for two nights while visiting the nearby National Park, and were very glad we did. The staff is incredibly nice and attentive and on check in they assign a staff member to serve as concierge to each guest. He/she checks in via text periodically (but not too much!!!) to make sure everything is going well. This became extremely important when my husband left his iPad in the room after we checked out. When we were about 20 mins away we got a text letting us know, and we were able to go back for it. (Thank you, Donald!). There were a couple of real highlights — watching the sun set over the pacific from their bar/dining area was incredible. And the food at their restaurant, Luna, was fresh, delicious, and fairly priced. The macaw reserve they maintain for these beautiful red scarlet birds is also amazing and worth the complimentary tour. On our final morning the owner stopped by to make sure we’d enjoyed our stay — a really nice touch. They also provide a free shuttle to and from the beach and the national park. It’s really hard not to enjoy yourself at Gaia!

Gaia was great! The property is beautiful and is connected to a nature reserve where you can take a tour and see all kinds of wildlife, including scarlet macaws and howler monkeys. Although the hotel is quite hilly, the staff is always ready to bring you up or down on a golf cart within a matter of minutes.
Eeveryone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. Chris at the front desk (also our personal concierge for our stay) made sure everything was taken care of for us and helped coordinate a private tour of Manuel Antonio National Park, as well as assisting with dinner recommendations and reservations for local restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, the restaurant in the hotel was great as well (we enjoyed breakfast every day and had some really nice dinners there as well) and the view of the sunset was incredible.
The room itself was lovely and spacious, with air conditioning that worked very well. We couldn't hear any noise from other guests and even though the hotel is surrounded by nature we really didn't have any problems with bugs. The room even came with a TV with Netflix (although we didn't turn it on since we were enjoying the sights so much!). There was a strong WiFi signal throughout the hotel as well.
The hotel shuttle to the public beach and Manuel Antonio National Park was also very convenient and ran hourly throughout the morning until late afternoon. The hotel also arranged for a beach chair and an umbrella rental when we wanted to go to the beach (around $5 per chair for the day - money well spent given how strong the sun is). At night we could get a taxi to some nearby restaurants for $6-$10.
All in all, Gaia was a lovely hotel with very nice amenities and friendly and welcoming employees. Well worth a look if you'll be in Manuel Antonio!

Our family of 4 (2 teens) stayed at the Gaia Hotel for several days. It is a beautiful property with lush grounds. However, what made it really stand out was the personal service and genuine warmth shown to us by each staff member. In particular, Gustavo was super friendly and always had the time to go the extra mile to make sure our needs were met (and then some!). We looked forward to our time on the golf cart with him! Everyone there works long hours and must have been tired, but you would be never know it from their positive outlook, their smiles, and their willingness to engage personally with the guests. The concierge Krishne was invaluable and made and rescheduled reservations for us to fit our unpredictable schedule. The companies he booked us with were all reputable and well-run, and he made great restaurant recommendations. We were grateful for the Gaia staff’s help with visiting the public beach. Though it’s only a 10 minute drive and not very crowded on the beach, there are an overwhelming number of men trying to get you to pay to park in their lot, rent their chairs, etc. and it is hard to know who is reputable. The Gaia driver took us on the shuttle and personally handed us over to the person they trust on the beach with rental chairs and he took very good care of us down to delivering drinks. The Gaia pool is lovely and was always serene. Lastly, we enjoyed the hot made to order breakfast and spa services! Thanks to all of the Gaia staff for taking such good care of us and ensuring that our vacation was perfect!

My partner and I had the absolute pleasure of returning to Gaia for the first time in 10 years.
Needless to say, Gaia delivered just as much if not more than they did the first time. Absolute first class service - the staff make you feel as though you are a friend and part of their family. Even the owner went out of his way to be approachable and friendly. The vibe at Gaia is so positive - you can tell by how happy the staff is.
Gaia not only invests much of their attention to the guest, but also the pristine and sensitive environment upon which the hotel resides. They are helping to rehabilitate the macaw, and actually helped bring the population back to Manuel Antonio. How cool is that? You can hike on the property and see these birds as well as monkeys, agouti, snakes, frogs, vegetation etc.
The breakfast at La Luna (restaurant on site) is delicious, and the dinner menu is second to none, which contains not only authentic Costa Rican family recipes, but also vegan and vegetarian dishes. We basically lived in La Luna (Hi Ricardo!).
Watching the sunset with a beverage in hand from the infinity pool every eve was priceless. We used to have to rush around to figure out where to watch the sunset. No more, since it can be done from the pool.
The spa was wonderful as ever. A very diverse menu of massage options after those awesome hikes on the reserve or Manuel Antonio national forest.
It definitely won't be another 10 years before I visit Gaia again. It is my home away from home! Thank you so very much Gaia friends! Pura vida!

This hotel is just brilliant. We stayed 3 nights in a studio room at the end of our trip and we so wish we could have stayed longer. The room was perfect and the housekeeping staff were really great. Our room had a nice terrace outside with table and chairs for morning coffee. The pools and seating areas around them are really lovely, allowing everyone the opportunity for privacy and their own little slice of paradise. The staff throughout the hotel were exceptionally good. Friendly, helpful, cheerful. I took them up on the complimentary reflexology session, not really a spa person, but this was a truly brilliant treatment. For a spa novice it was not at all overwhelming and I have a sense that although I am no expert, Marta may be the best of therapists. I left the spa floating and utterly relaxed. Thank you so much! The shuttle to the beach and park is great and the link with the beach chair team who can sort you out with drinks and food is just fab. This is a great hotel in a fantastic location and we have just the happiest memories of Costa Rica.

THE GROUND IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Forget the national park which is totally a tourist trap. What’s better than your own trail to walk around with macaws and mini pineapples!
Parking everybody’s car down the hill is an brilliant idea, keep the hotel quiet and tranquil. Also running down the slope is so much fun! Walking up is a great cardio exercise too!
Everybody at the hotel is super friendly and offered great advice and conversations, especially my concierge Danny, Alto and Marcos who brought me all the fruit skewers by the pool and served my breakfast and room service!
One thing I personally would like is a map and some printed info about the hotel in the room because who can remember the introduction by the concierge when you are looking at the best view in Manuel Antonio?
The reason I took one star off is the restaurant. Given it’s a 5 star restaurant and the price it charges, the dinner menu is really disappointing. I stayed here for 9 days, tried the restaurant for first night and 2 nights when I got a cold. For a whole week, had to get food delivery everyday which is cheaper and much much more delicious. Everything I ordered was really salty to my taste(mahi mahi and chicken soup) and I’ve drunk really salty ocean water for my surfing classes. ;) happy to pay the price if the food actually lives up to 5 star standard.

We stayed at Gaia for 4 nights and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the Manuel Antonio area. A few stand out things regarding the hotel: 1. Being assigned a personal concierge was amazing. If I messaged Carlos and Jon on Whatapp, they were very responsive no matter the time of day and got us whatever we needed: food, drinks, transportation, restaurant recommendations, etc. If we needed anything at all it was very nice to know we had direct communication with someone who could help, was a native spanish speaker, and knew the area. 2. There is free transportation to the Manuel Antonio beaches and the shuttle runs every hour. Once we got dropped at the beach, you can get two beach chairs and an umbrella to rent for the entire day for 10 USD. 3. I can't speak more highly about the restaurant at Gaia. They only have one restaurant, but the food is of superior quality. We ate dinner 3/4 nights there and it did not disappoint.

Lovely hotel with huge rooms, lots of wildlife roaming the trees and very friendly staff. The pool areas are also quite nice since they are infinity pools and nobody seems to use them so it felt very private.
They also have a dedicated reserve on site that gives free tours at 3:30pm and the naturalist shares all about the efforts to save the macaws. Out of the 10 acres, 9 is saved for the conservation efforts.
Tip: They have a free shuttle that makes hourly trips to the national park and the beach.

Again, I don’t smoke. However, there is definitely no smoking in the rooms.
Casual!!! It’s very much in nature and warm.
I thought they were medium. Not really hard or soft. I am an easy sleeper, so I am not the best person to answer this question. Sorry
Beautiful and sunny most of the day - maybe a little, refreshing afternoon or evening shower - but definitely a great time to explore Costa Rica and stay at GAIA.
We took the tour. He did bring the scope and also took pictures for us using the scope.
