This hotel is well worth the expense just to enjoy the feeling of being nestled inside a tropical jungle with monkeys as your regular breakfast companions!
The architecture is incredible and perfectly complements the jaw dropping views through the dense jungle out to the private beach.
The resort clings to a fairly steep hill-side and subtly blends into the jungle foliage. A series of small roads connect the various buildings and a number of motorized golfcarts are available at a few minutes notice to run you anywhere you want to go.
The pool bar serves excellent cocktails and had a live DJ during happy hour which was quite magical, listening to music, sipping cocktails in the infinity pool and heated jacuzzi, and gazing out over the sea as sun set!
We ate in the restaurant one evening and it was good although expensive. We were a little disappointed that at $700 per night for our room that a cooked breakfast was not included in the room rate. It seemed petty to charge extra however the complimentary fresh fruit platter, juice and coffee were very nice and enough for us on most days.
Both the freshwater and salt water pools provided cold drinking water infused with tropical fruits, and complementary sunscreen and mosquito repellent for guests which was a nice touch, although surprisingly we did not find as many mosquitos as we had expected.
We booked a couples spa treatment one afternoon (the Signature Shanti package) which was incredible. We had the whole spa and private terrace to ourselves and for the first hour sipped on prosecco whilst enjoying the jacuzzi and sauna, then lounged in our robes on this beautiful private terrace suspended over the jungle. The spa treatments were excellent and the masseuses were definitely five-star quality.
The level of maintenance and cleanliness of the resort was not perfect and this was the only area where the hotel needs take care the ensure that they maintain their exclusive status.

Need improvements: - WiFi! Need to make it easier for the guest. This needs major attention. - Walk to the beach even after using the golf cart can be challenging for those who have bad knees. Not an issue for us but not recommended to those who have difficulty walking uphill. - When it’s raining, they don’t suggest for you to walk because the paths are steep but you really have to be careful and mindful on the shoes you are wearing.

POSITIVES: Having been regular guests at Los Altos as they also have a very nice Villas, we were initially drawn to Makanda by the Sea after noticing the thoughtful effort they put into designing their beach lounge. Even without a direct beachfront, they managed to elevate the experience beautifully. This attention to detail piqued our curiosity, and we found ourselves wondering what more they had to offer in terms of amenities and rooms. It wasn’t long before we decided to stay—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we've made.
The rooms are a masterpiece of creative and elegant design, each space curated with an eye for detail that exudes luxury and comfort. Whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner, every meal was a delight.
We did experience some hiccups here and there but they managed to turn it around. Service at Makanda is nothing short of exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect, taking the time to remember our names and personal preferences. Their attentiveness added a warm, personal touch to our experience, making us feel truly valued as guests. We LOVE the bar and restaurant team! Thank you thank you for taking care of us.
The facilities at Makanda are equally impressive. The pool area is stunning with breathtaking views. They have a great DJ on Friday and Saturday. It’s clear that the team here has poured their hearts into creating an environment that is both luxurious and in harmony with the nature around it.
We were so delighted with our experience that we returned just five days later—something we've never done before and we will do again! The level of care and attention to detail during both stays has convinced us that Makanda will now be our go-to destination in Quepos.
We are deeply grateful to the entire Makanda team for making our stays so memorable. This property has truly become our home away from home, and we look forward to many more visits in the future.

Kudos to whoever designed this hotel. Makanda is truly a stunning resort, our room was a Wow Loft and hands down was the best hotel room we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Every member of staff we came into contact with was extremely helpful and would go out of their way to give you 5 star service. Special shout out to Louis and Alfredo from the restaurant who were stand outs. Many reviewers have said the prices for food and drink were high, we found the prices to be in line with other establishments of the same quality in the area. We had lunch at the pool most days and had dinner twice at Arbol. The food was delicious and good quality and I would recommend. The hotel has lost a point on the breakfast. It really was dire!! The worst breakfast I have experienced anywhere in the world. A plate of fruit was plonked down in front of you with a glass of fruit juice…. No choice of juice, just whatever was on the menu that day. If you wanted water, tap water was available…. You had to pay extra for bottled water. The breakfast was made to order, but took an age and was always cold…. The breakfast was crying out for a small buffet with cereals, juices, cakes, croissants and yoghurts. This small addition would transform the hotel. Finally, no free water in the room. For a hotel of this price point, this was pretty disappointing. I nearly forgot to mention the wildlife which was amazing…. As others have said, we saw more wildlife on the property than at the National Park. To summarise, stunning property, amazing views, the best wildlife but something was missing to make it a 5 star experience.

From the moment we arrived at Makanda we were greeted with open arms. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to help us navigate our trip since it was our first time in Costa Rica. The room was Amazing and I mean AMAZING (we stayed in the WOW Suite). They thought of every detail to make your stay the most luxurious as possible. Food… the food was hands down delicious! The second night we ventured out because we wanted to try a restaurant at the marina… big mistake…it was gross and we spent $200 and took like 3 bites (that never happens we love to eat)! Highlight of our trip was that we got to meet the owners and hang out with them!! Super welcoming and generous couple!! I did a body scrub at the spa (which I’ve been to many spas not outside of the US) and it was the best treatment I have ever received!! Thank you to Andres, Roger, Byron, Judith, Louise, Milton and all the rest (I apologize if I left your name out). You were all Wonderful!! If you have been this resort…just book it…you won’t be disappointed!!

I stayed with my partner at Makanda hotel and it was a fantastic experience. We stayed in the penthouse, a suite with attention to every detail, a unique design, a very comfortable bed and a bathroom that left you speechless. There is also a private pool with an ocean view. The structure is surrounded by greenery, there are two swimming pools, two bars and a restaurant. There is the possibility of having an aperitif with live music, where you can drink excellent cocktails and food. The staff is courteous and always ready to help you. I recommend everyone to try this beautiful hotel, you won't regret it.

We booked two nights at Makanda to enjoy a few days (starting with my birthday) at the end of a very active and exhausting trip. From the moment we stepped into reception, every aspect of our stay there was the perfect combination of relaxing and magical. Halfway through the checkin process we were leaning towards rebooking our flights and adding another night, which we did as soon as we saw our room. We stayed in the WOW loft, and WOW is right. Usually online room photos exaggerate a room's merits. This time it didn't do them justice. The room was stunning. My only criticism was that I tripped over the decorative stones a few times. The monkeys and macaws outside our window more than made up for this. We saw more wildlife on the property than we did during the rest of our time in Costa Rica.
On our first day we decided to splurge for a spa package as it was my birthday. The package included private use of the facilities, a facial, and a massage. Not only was the spa beautiful and perfectly appointed, but the messages were incredible. 100% worth it.
The staff was incredible, welcoming and attentive. While the property is on a steep hillside, the hotel provides on-call golf cart chauffeur service. These carts can move and it's almost like being on a Jungle Book Disney ride. The pool areas are really lovely. I'm not normally a lounge by the pool type, but I couldn't get enough of them—both the main pool and the salt water pool are gorgeous and surrounded by wildlife. It would have been easy to just stay on the property the entire time, but 100% recommend doing a few excursions and it would be criminal to skip going to Manuel Antonio—definitely book a tour.
On our last day we had a late night flight out of San Jose. After we checked out we stayed by the pool as long as humanly possible (til around 5pm) before departing. This was relaxing enough to offset the insanity of the drive back in a rental car (a note on renting cars in Costa Rica, only do so if you are an extremely competent driver in both off-road and urban conditions). From the minute we landed in New York, we were already fantasizing about our next visit to Makanda.

Stayed with my husband for 3 days at Makanda by the Sea. Every meal was a 5 star experience. The hotel is so beautiful nestled in the side of the rainforest overlooking the ocean. Makanda was built with beauty in every aspect to detail for peace and relaxation. The rooms are comfortable and clean, I loved spending the mornings watching the waves break while sitting on our private patio. We didn't get a lot of sun as November is rainy season but we were able to enjoy relaxing in such a serine location and we know we will be back.

First impressions are everything and they blew us away! After a breezy check-in, we received yummy welcome drinks and the staff gave us a tour. They insisted on carrying all of our bags and took us around in a golf cart. It felt like we were getting the royal treatment.
As far as the room goes – the beauty of this hotel is in the details. There are Bose speakers and espresso makers in the main area of the room, makeup wipes and a Dyson hairdryer in the bathroom, yoga mats in the walk-in closet, and silk eye masks on the nightstand. There are a lot of mirrors and lights in the room – which is overlooked by so many other hotels. I love that there was an option for a bath and a shower. The shower space is huge and has a bench. Also, there are two shower head options (overhead rain and handheld.) The provided slippers and robe are cozy to get into afterward.
We stayed in the penthouse and it's EPIC. The personal pool area is heavenly, and the hotel staff served us brunch in the pool – which further elevated the experience. My friends stayed in another style room and it was also incredible.
Details were also not missed in the common areas. There are a ton of different types of seating options by the pool/hot tub area (lounge chairs, cabanas, etc..), the showers and bathrooms by the pool are aesthetically cool, and I loved that there was a hydration station with sunscreen and sanitizer.
We were here for a birthday and the staff ensured to make it extra special. They provided celebratory food and beverages, decorated my room with balloons, and left a card. Hotel Makanda made this an unforgettable birthday that my crew and I will never forget.
When you are traveling with a mix of people, you know it is a success when everyone in the group wants to come back to this hotel – some with their romantic partners and others for another girls trip.

This hotel is beautiful with excellent service from what seems to be typical of hospitality of Costa Rican people. They truly aim to please and go above and beyond. We highly recommend villa 2 honeymoon juniors suite with pool - it’s is much larger than the photos portray online. The room really is outstanding with many nice features. I do wish there was tea/coffee facilities in the room instead of just an Espresso machine that it is on offer and I wished for some sort of drying rack for wet bathers etc but this was not a huge problem. We were concerned one day with loud disco music by the pool which doesn’t match the luxury surroundings of a luxury traveller hotel that it seems to attract but we need not worry since as soon as we asked for the music to be tuned down/stopped they did it immediately and we never had to ask again. The menus for lunch and dinner are the same so the menus are quite limited but they were more than happy to accommodate my bespoke menu ideas - you just have to ask them and they will do their best to deliver. Overall the food is very good even though their menus may seem a little limited if you stay more than 3 days. This hotel has very steep access to most things - but they provide golf carts regularly and quickly when needed. Overall, a fantastic luxury hotel with great service and high standards. Absolutely Stunning 5-Star Hotel. Pure luxury from the smallest of details all the way up to the overall property design. Sky Penthouse was completely private, immaculately designed, with every amenity available. Walls are soundproof so no chance of disturbing other guests. Wrap around balcony with private pool and several seating options comes with breathtaking view. All the doors open facing towards the ocean so you can bath in the soaking tup, sleep in the bed, lay on the couches, or eat at the table....all with the breeze coming in from the fully collapsable walls/doors. Fully stocked mini bar with snacks, yoga mats, umbrellas, beach bag, all organic toiletries. Room, bathroom, and private pool were all spotless.
Food, whether eating at the restaurants or in-room was perfectly cooked with the highest quality ingredients and options for everyone. Every employee we encountered greeted us with a smile and helping attitude. Service was immediate and attentive, as you would expect from a property of this caliber. They always went above and beyond.
The pools/spas are clean, elegantly designed, and come with stellar panoramic views of the ocean. Drinks are absolutely delicious and made with the utmost of skill. Margaritas were the best we both had ever had.
Concierge promptly takes care of any reservations, arrangements, or activity bookings to ensure a completely stress free experience.
Makanda is the only choice for holiday if you are wanting the best of the best. We will not stay anywhere else, as it would only be inferior to the grandeur of Makanda.

I'm so sorry I'm just now seeing this!
I do not know if the hotel allows guests to use the pool. Yes there is a large refrigerator and full kitchen! We had ice in our freezer, it was never a problem.
HIGHLY recommend this hotel. It's far from the airport but worth it once you are there!
There are more places to choose from in the Manuel Antonio area.
