The location is quite far from the beach, but close to some nice restaurants and bars. The room itself was dirty and had a random collection of seemingly leftover furniture that hasn't been cared for in quite some time. The room was unprepared for our arrival (the fridge wasn't plugged in, there were no towels, etc.) and we had a... More

We stayed at Sol Y Mar for 3 nights. The location is pretty good, but is a long walk to the beach and main restaurant area, although it is all downhill. There is a public bus which is a cheap easy way to get back to the top of the hill and the hostel. The rooms were pretty basic with... More

I really don't know how i took the decision to stay there now that im reading again all the comments... Rooms are dirty, small, smells bad, bathroom is disgusting... There are no windows, so there is no light. Hostess are costarican people but unfriendly and the worst of all I find a bat over my bed... I really love animals... More

Sol y Mar was our favorite place we stayed during our Costa Rican adventure! The place was a perfect mixture of homey and adventurous. Monkeys and Tucans were visible from our breakfast table, Solanga, the owner, became our best friend, full of advice and conversation! The hostel is her home and she works hard to keep it clean and beautiful.... More

This is wonderful place with wonderful people. Don't let the neighbors confuse you, this is where you want to be.......Order out of Chaos, some neighbors are trying to place poor reviews because their properties are condemned and will be demolished, as they tried to build resorts without permits or any support from the community. Sol y Mar Backpackers is the... More

My husband and I stayed at Sol y Mar for one night only - and although the host was kind enough to give us a deal and offer us breakfast in the morning, we felt we had intruded on her quiet night and had somehow ripped her off. She even tried to change the price of the room once she... More

Wow ! As soon as we arrive in that place we knew by the lady Solangy that we would be at a good place. She cooked delicious french toast with a coffee and she is been so helpful with all our bad previous story (had our backpack stolen with passport) The room was clean and really good if you want... We spent 20 minutes trying to understand the extremely rude woman explaining the pricing of the room. The rooms were tiny, cramped, dirty, and dangerous. The communal room had random, unleashed Rottweilers barking and scaring our young children. Parking was locked, but so hazardous to enter and exit that would be impossible without a guide to assist in parking your... More

I looked through previous reviews and I am surprised about high expectations. "Sol y mar backpackers" is a hostel. Period. We paid 35$ per night and had everything we needed: hot shower, comfortable bed and air conditioner. If you want semi-luxury conditions do not stay at hostels at all. Why I graded this place as "excellent'? 1). It was very... More

half the stuff in the room didn't work -half the lights, half the plumbing. The bathroom smelt bad. I thought there might be towels provided and thought there would definitely be toilet paper -wrong. walked out and left them to it. Great place down the road (Backpackers Manuel Antonio) at half the price. How did this place get a recommendation... More
