Perfect stay from start to finish. The property is beautiful and unique. The staff was very attentive and extremely friendly. Everything felt very private and special. We stayed in Master Suite 19, which had an absolutely insane view. We ended up ordering room service most of the time because we the view here rivaled the restaurant and amphitheater, and there is a beautifully set table ready to be used on the terrace. Beyond eating and swimming in our pool, we really enjoyed exploring the property through the beautifully kept pathways. Walking through the jungle, seeing monkeys overhead, dart frogs, toucans, etc all on the property. Much to our surprise, the only thing we didn't see were bugs or mosquitos! Truly amazing. Before booking I saw mixed reviews on the food -- we absolutely didn't find this to be the case. The included breakfast was great. I really enjoyed the "Costa Rican" breakfast. We mostly ordered dinner to the room, but all the food was delicious. Chicken quesadilla and shrimp pasta was exceptional. We had lunch in the restaurant one day and it was just "OK" -- but all in the all the food is great. We took one day to walk down to the beach, which was quite a fun experience. It took us about an hour climbing slowly downhill but it was good exercise. The beach itself is was fantastic with great views. We got lunch and drinks from the super amazing host at the beach bar/restaurant. She also showed us their resident turtle and helped arrange for a ride back up the mountain when we were ready to leave. It's not a sand beach, which I honestly I found to be more pleasant. There were tables, cabanas, and lounge chairs. We were the only ones at the beach -- it was awesome. The only con I have is that the pool in Master Suite 19 is too deep. I'm 5'10 and had to be on my tippy toes/tread water to move around anywhere in the pool besides the stairs where you get in. This was very easy to overlook, but just be aware, or bring a float. The main hotel pool does not have this issue, so if you're feeling short like I did, head there. I would recommend this resort to you if you are looking for something authentic, historical, romantic, and unique. The setting is unparalleled and the service matches. It's not the newest, or the most technologically advanced, or any of that -- but that's not why you're here. If you want that experience, there are plenty of chain hotels that will give you the same experience in every country without anything special or unique.

We arrived April 6, after a three hour drive to the resort from SJO. Checkin was fast without any explanation we did arrive in big group for the wedding. The room we where given was a handicap room without a view. I was very disappointed by the room without a view. The food at the restaurant was okay not great . The wedding was beautiful. Would I return again probably not do to the room without a view.

Dear Friend, thank you very much for your review. It is true that the hotel offers 8 different categories of rooms ranging from our master suites with private pool, our villas with private balcony and our Standard room with a view on a little garden but not to the ocean. All our guests can see the difference and details by checking our website before making a reservation. We hope you will give us another opportunity. Have a great day. manager@villacaletas.com

This place is not what they advertise. The management is the worst and they lie to you about their rooms. Do not go there there are much better hostels in the area at much better prices. It is not what is is cracked up to be. By the way their beach sucks real bad.

A friend recommended this place to spend a few days at the end of quite an active holiday and it was everything we could have asked for. I was upgraded from a Standard room to a Standard Delux one, with a lovely balcony overlooking the bay, beautiful. You have to be fairly fit as there are many steps and steep hills to climb. The rooms are spacious, excellent bathroom with a lovely shower. The breakfast is included and you decide which one you want. The evening meal is a bit more expensive, 38$ plus tax for a me on dish and 38$ for a bottle of Chilean wine. The main pool is lovely, and an infinity pool. Towels are available at the pool including lunch and drinks

Hotel is “fine”, needs some renovations, the staff is good and warm. Location and views are amazing. My biggest complaint is about the food. We dine, breakfast and have a couple of snacks and the food is very poor in all means. Rooms are “ok” like I said before, renovations are urgent

Just a great hotel. You can stay there without ever wanting to leave the resort. Restaurant has marvellous food. Breakfast which is included is really good with lots of options. Infinity pool. Spa. Exercice area. Rooms are quiet and private. Caveats. Unless you have car, you cannot leave the resort except by taxi. It is at the top of a hill with a long windy road. The beach is at the bottom of the hill as well. There are shuttles 4WD every hour. You miss it you have a long steep walk. Not really a swimming or wading beach, but a good place to hang out and listen to the waves. Food and liquor available there. No ATM and they won’t change Canadian $$ Be prepared to climb. Certain rooms are a long climb to the pool and restaurant area.

We stayed 3 nights at the hotel for a wedding. The wedding was perfect and amazing but we got stolen dollars cash in our room. We left cash in our luggage and it was stolen. The hotel told us that they were going to check the security cams but they haven’t contacted us. It is not a safe hotel.

We spent 8 nights at the beautiful Villa Caletas Hotel! During every aspect of our visit, the staff was so kind and helpful. This included the front desk, concierge, and restaurant/bar staff. They were friendly, responsive, and even helped point out wildlife to our family. The hotel grounds are amazing, and the view is spectacular. You can see macaws, toucans, iguanas, frogs, monkeys and more right there on site! The infinity pool and private beach are also a wonderful spots to relax. Staying at the Villa Caletas Hotel is a luxurious Costa Rica experience!

Location, location, location. Villa Caletas has always had a five-star location, atop a ridge-line overlooking the blue Pacific. The rooms are individually unique, and all interestingly different. We've found all this to be the same, on multiple stays. But.... The dining room (and gorgeous terrace) have drop-dead views, but the food has always disappointed. Not bad, but simply inconsistent with all other aspects of the hotel. But this visit, something good happened. The meals were excellent! Wonderful local ingredients (we favor the local fish options), beautifully prepared, and well served. Service is friendly and attentive. We'll return again soon!

I have stayed in both the Villa Caletas side and the Palace side of this hotel on several different occasions. I booked a room at the Palace which was very interesting. Down almost like a tunnel to enter my room. Excellent room with a wonderful view of the ocean. There was a hot tub on the balcony and he TV was integrated into the dresser at the base of the bed. Could not ask for a more beautiful view. The other times I stayed on the Villa side which was very enjoyable as well. I was in Villa 11 which had a very nice view of the jungle and off to the left I could also see the ocean. I enjoyed the Villa even more than the Palace mainly because it was closer to the restaurant/bar area and easier accessible. The hotel is perched high up in the mountain and there isn't a lot to do, but that was my entire point. I needed a break from all the hustle and bustle of life and this place took my mind off everything. I also had a rental car, so if I wanted to drive and explore the area, that was not an issue. The pool area is very pretty as well. Never a lot of people and the workers were very friendly. Breakfast was a treat eating over looking the amphitheater. Many exotic birds and monkeys hanging out in the mornings. If your looking for a place to relax and you have a rental car, this is a must see hotel. The grounds are amazing just to explore for a few hours. I will be back again!
