Surrounded by a network of the scenic canals, this Lodge is located in one of the most exotic regions of the world, characterized by its rich flora and fauna. This lovely lodge has 32 comfortable spacious bungalows with comfortable beds, private bathrooms, hot water and ceiling fans, also there is a beautiful swimming pool. Aninga Lodge has an excellent restaurant and bar service and we also offer bilingual guided tours throughout the Tortuguero area. While designing the place, our priority was to respect the environment, that's why 80% of the hotel is constructed 1.5 m (5 feet) above the ground. Restaurant, bungalows and walking trails are built on stilts, it allows not only to protect the natural habitat of animals but also lets you enjoy the panoramic view of the tropical rainforest. Moreover our determination to preserve the environment inspired us to create a Water Treatment Plant that prevents contamination of the waters in the area.
The grounds are beautiful and there’s a large turtle-shaped pool to cool off. There’s a bar by the pool for those who are so inclined. There’s a small gift shop with electrical converters, toothbrushes, souvenirs, etc. The rooms were very clean and the bathrooms appear to have been recently updated. The beds were comfortable. There is wifi and there are electrical outlets, but no USB outlets. No television. There are just screens on the windows and no AC, so plan accordingly. It can get very sticky and warm in the rooms even with the ceiling fan on. You will absolutely be awoken by the load roaring, croaking sound of howler monkeys just before 5 am. It is both hilarious and alarming. The water in the bungalow is not potable, but there are water dispensers near reception and the restaurant. I recommend having a refillable water bottle with you. We enjoyed the food served at the property. They had a mix of Costa Rican foods and American/European fare (ex. pasta, pancakes, cereal, yogurt). I’m gluten free and there were plenty of options for me. We did the 3-day, 2-night package. Transportation, food, and three guided tours/excursions were included. The only thing I paid for separately was admission to Tortuguero National Park ($15 for a nonresident adult, $5 for nonresident child). Be sure to bring plenty of cash for tipping your guide, the restaurant staff, drivers, and maids. There isn’t an ATM on site. We were picked up downtown around 6:30 am on Day 1. The lodge uses a large passenger bus with room for luggage underneath. If you are able to leave most of your luggage behind, however, that would definitely be easier. Guests at Aninga, Evergreen, and Pachira all travel together. We drove about an hour and a half through the Braulio Carillo National Park. We stopped at a restaurant called El Ceibo in Limón. They offered a buffet breakfast with traditional Costa Rican dishes. We spotted some sloths and frogs right outside the restaurant. We returned to the bus for another hour and a half, approximately. You drive through pineapple and banana plantations. We transferred to boats near Parismina around 11. Each lodge had its own boat. We departed just after 11:15 and arrived at the lodge around 1:00. We saw a handful of crocodiles and two spider monkeys en route. On arrival, we received our room assignments and information about the lodge, dropped our luggage and had lunch. They serve a buffet lunch daily from 12:30 to 2:00. Our first outing was day one at 2:30. We walked the grounds of the lodge and the neighboring Pachira Lodge. Our guide showed us the local flora and fauna. We saw more spider monkeys (much closer this time), birds, lizards, crabs, and many insects and arachnids. We had free time after the walking tour. Dinner is offered from 7 to 9 pm daily, so you can go at your convenience. The pool is also open until 9. There is coffee, tea, and chocolate available starting at 5:20 daily. So we were able to get drinks before our canal tour through Tortuguero National Park, which departed at 6:00 am. Breakfast was waiting upon our return. It is available from 7 to 9 am daily. We had free time again until 2:30 pm, which we used to swim. At 2:30, we took a boat ride a couple minutes away to Tortuguero Village. We started at the Sea Turtle Conservancy Center. We didn’t have an opportunity to go in, but our guide provided information about turtles and their reproductive habits. We then saw the black sand beaches were the turtles typically nest. As of mid-April, there were no turtles to be seen. Then, we had a little over an hour to explore Tortuguero Village (get a snack, souvenir shop, etc). We departed around 8:45 am the next morning. I’m not sure why they had us depart so early because we ended up waiting at the pier/port for approximately 2.5 hours before the bus showed up. We had a quick lunch at the same restaurant where breakfast was served on Day 1 (El Ceibo), then a slow drive back to San Jose. We reached our San Jose hotel (near the airport this time) around 6 pm. FYI - this did not happen to us, but the road to San Jose through Braulio Carillo NP is often closed in the afternoon due to inclement weather. The detour would add on several hours, so it is best to have flexible plans on Day 3 and have plenty of things to entertain yourself. I would have given this experience 5 stars if not for the long, taxing experience on Day 3.…

After a boat ride of one and a half hours, you get to the hotel, and realise that you are well away from main civilisation. There was a warm welcome and a drink, and then the walk to the stand alone chalets down the walkway. A simple room, but perfectly adequate, with a large bed and lovely shower. The restaurant is self service and the food was very good Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Wifi covers the whole site.

We spent two nights here on a recent trip to Costa Rica and had a wonderful time. The hotel has cabins and a main lodge for meals. Our cabin was very nice with a writing desk and a nice shower and bath. Everything was spotless and there were rockers on the porch. You really got a sense of the jungle surroundings on the property. Although some write-ups mention that there is no wifi at the property, we found wifi that worked well in our cabin and in the main lodge. Meals are provided and the food was quite good with several choices and wonderful salads and fruits. I would definitely stay here again if I visit Tortuguero again.

A lovely well appointed cabin midst a lot of greenery. The boat ride there was interesting, and it was also easy to go to the little town on the other side of the river. The room had a lovely little sit out. The beds were comfortable & room spacious. We had all our meals in the hotel. Buffets right thru. The nature walks & hike with Bernhad were interesting, and sighting blue crabs, squirrel & howlers monkeys, igunas, herons etc on the premises was nice. Particularly special was an active sloth - a rarity ! The boat trips thru the waterways was interesting as also the hike up the hill. Aninga was very comfortable & their staff very hospitable & helpful. Lovely place to stay.

Our journey by boat brought my husband and I, along with other passengers, to our remote destination during heavy tropical rains. We lodged within private, individual bungalows with screened windows (no glass to close), where we could appreciate the sounds of the heavy tropical rains and the forest awakening in the early morning hours. What I had thought were roars of a panther, were in fact Howler Monkeys establishing their daily territory. Rocking chairs on the front porch provided an enjoyable, restful lounging experience. Elevated, connecting boardwalks throughout the lodge grounds provided access to the pool and outside bar area, canal (river) dock and dining room facilities. Our “Gate 1 Tour” arranged for all of our delicious buffet style meals, as well as a daily boat tour. One day our boat tour cruised our group along the narrow tributaries feeding into the main canal (river), to view flora and fauna, including birds, monkeys and crocodiles; while another day we were ferried to the small, pedestrian-only city of Tortuguero on the Carribean at the mouth of the canal (river), where we observed local life and discovered evidence of previous green turtle nurseries. Another educational adventure was walking through the rainforest along the winding boardwalk, to a neighboring lodge under the canopy of dense trees. This area is highly esteemed as being the most exotic region within Costa Rica, with more sitings of tropical birds and monkeys than what we had viewed on a prior Amazon adventure. Our stay at Aninga was the absolute highlight of our entire Costa Rican experience and I would recommend a visit without hesitation.…

The lodge is one of the most serene places we have visited in Costa Rica. We saw so much wildlife constantly here. We did a canal boat ride, village tour and and walk around the grounds where we saw tons of wildlife and plants. The lodge is so relaxing and the staff is unbelievably accommodating. We stayed an extra night and the staff made sure we were well taken care of. I have read several reviews about the food being very repetitive but we did not feel that way. There were always several choices of entrees and sides to pick from. Would totally recommend this trip if you are going to Costa Rica. Not only a fabulous lodge but you get a boat ride to get to the lodge!

The hotel is located in the rainforest, accessible by boat and we were able to see some animals on the ground (monkeys, iguanas and birds). The bungalow is big and with a nice balcony. The food was ok and well-served.

Please beware that lots of construction going on right now. Starts at 8 and ends at 5 Pounding on metal roofs. The wild life isn't around either This is our second time visiting Aninga Lodge. Grounds and cabins are very nice. Big change in the food. Use to have fruit at lunch and dinner now just breakfast. People working in the dining area look very tired and not happy. Dessert if just one choice and not very good. Food is ok but not delicious like it was before. Coffee is still very good. Wouldn't plan on visiting this lodge until all the construction is over. Banging on metal roofs all day long is not a vacation.

You have your own private cabin isolated from others. All meals were included and were of very good quality. A little repetitious with respect to beans and rice and the vegetables though. Beautiful setting with good access to the National Park (by boat only). We didn't see a lot of animals but there were numerous birds.
