The area of Tortuguero is rightfully called The Amazon of Costa Rica because access is only by boat on Jungle Rivers. Turtle Beach Lodge, 5 miles north of the town of Tortuguero, is a secluded resort spanning 175 acres with miles of jungle trails, a meandering private canal, and a half mile of beach adjoining still more isolated beaches. The lodge accommodates approximately 80 guests; assisted by a well trained staff and guides who ease you into an exciting jungle experience. Stay in the beautifully landscaped cabinas, swim in our turtle shaped pool, relax in the adjacent shady hammock hut with food and drink from the restaurant and bar.

We stayed two nights here at the end of July. We are a family of four, with two teenage boys. After a long flight and a transfer from San Jose, this was just what we needed. The rooms were simple but have everything needed including no TV! Bonus. The memory foam mattresses ensured a very good night's sleep. As it's 8 km from the village and only accessible by boat, the meals are provided and part of the package. The food was simple, local cuisine and cooked well. Our guide was Mervin who was full of enthusiasm for the flora and fauna around us. We got up early at 5.45 and went out on the boat to see the wildlife. We saw Caiman, crocodile, kingfishers, howler monkeys howling, spider monkeys, Jesus Christ lizard, and more. Early trips are so worth it. We then strolled back to a hot breakfast at 8 am. We also went to see a green turtle lay her eggs at night. We gazed up at a star-studded sky while she buried them, then saw her go back into the ocean. Nature is abundant in this part of Costa Rica and so is the rain! Come prepared with hiking shoes, waterproofed clothing, binoculars and an appreciation that it rains. We paddled in the sea, the rip tides prevent swimming safely, and swam in the pool. As our first taste of Costa Rica it was wonderful.

We stayed here for 3 nights in August. The lodge has a great vibe, the staff are lovely and the location fantastic. Our guide Roberto was great - very knowledgeable - and Christian in the office was super helpful- he was really great helping us out with a problem we had. All the staff were very caring. The rooms are quite basic but that’s all you need. The grounds are nice with monkeys spotted swinging in the trees. The trips on the river are great with the guide spotting all sorts of wildlife - we saw caiman, bats, monkeys, lizards and various birds. Apparently there was also a sloth in the grounds too. Lots of red frogs on the jungle walk. The high point for me was the evening turtle nesting trip - just fantastic! It was so wonderful to see these amazing turtles laying their eggs and returning to the sea. All in all a fab stay at Turtle Beach Lodge - I would definitely recommend.

Having booked this lodge at the last minute we were initially a little concerned at being so far from Tortuguero village, but this turned out to be a virtue. The boat transfer itself was an adventure through some narrow canals teeming with wildlife. The site was very atmospheric too, with direct access to rainforest and the beach. Our guide for the time we were there, Roberto, was brilliant - knowledgeable about the wildlife, generous with his time and good company.

The name may make you to believe that there is a beach with turtles close by. That’s wrong. It is far away and you have to book a trip. The hotel itself was good. Lots of hammocks. Monkeys in front of you. I booked a room and got included two trips and a all inclusive and transfer. The trips were good. One boat trip one walk through the rain forest. I felt good there. Also with the tours, the pool, the recreation time. Perfect for Me. Only one complaint. The mattress was very thin and used so it was like sleeping on the floor. Without carpet. Not nice.

I’m pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable stay at Turtle Beach Lodge. The lodge encompasses over 150 acres with almost a half mile of beachfront and is within the boundaries of Tortuguero National Reserve. This unique location allows us to be part of nature and enjoy the jungle and animals. Guests are very welcome to walk the beach, play in the surf and enjoy the ocean view. However, since we are surrounded by the reserve, we willingly comply with all restrictions to maintain this area as a nesting place for the sea turtles. The park requests that we not allow guests on the beach at night and that all Turtle tours be done in a controlled area in Tortuguero. Most of the tour money goes to the National Park and their local tour guides. We have begun the process of upgrading the guest rooms. All rooms currently have cool ceramic floors, native woods and breezy ceiling fans - we have started upgrading mattresses! Thank you for vacationing at Turtle Beach Lodge, we hope to see you again.

My wife & I have become frequent visitors to Costa Rica for vacations and Turtle Beach Lodge is a must on the list of our places to visit. It is our favourite place to stay in CR and our recent visit was our seventh. We enjoy it so much that we stay for five nights. The hotel pick up in the San Jose area works very conveniently and the driver Marco is excellent. We enjoyed the breakfast stop in Guapiles on the way to the port for the scenic boat trip, first to the village of Tortuguero and then on to the Lodge. Our guide, Fernando Cortes was outstanding. We have had the pleasure to have him as our guide several times now and his knowledge & experience are incredible. All the guides are outstanding. Maurice also did a great job as our boat captain, pointing out some of the amazing wildlife we saw along the way - including a crocodile! The staff are truel stars at this location - always friendly & courteous - including the restaurant servers, housekeepers, groundskeepers,& boat captains. A special thank you to Christian who manages the office & reception area and always tries to make everyone feel welcomed and enjoy their stay. The other stars of the Lodge are of course the wildlife. While on the property we observed & photographed Scarlet Macaws, many Great Green Macaws, Basilisk Lizards, Toucans, Green Heron, Montezuma Oropendolas, Howler monkeys, Spider monkeys, white-faced Capuchin monkeys, caiman, iguanas and more. We also saw many other creatures on the excellent boat tour. This is a magical place, more remote than the other lodges in the Tortuguero region. The cabins are clean & comfortable - no AC but we were quite comfortable with the ceiling fans doing a nice job at night. We also enjoyed the included breakfast, lunch & dinner buffet in the recently renovated dining area. As mentioned, this was our seventh visit and we can't wait to return next spring!
