We, two couples, stayed here for 3 nights as part of a tour organized by llamatours. As we found with all our locations in CR you have to move your own luggage. To get to Tortuguero you have to travel by boat and the transfer from the bus to the boat was a little tricky down a muddy slope. Just... More

First, we stayed here with our tour group arranged through Natural Expeditions, so I have no idea what else was available in the area. Overall, we loved Tortuguero, Mawamba Lodge, and the tours. It was one of our most favorite stops in Costa Rica. Stay at Mawamba two nights. Because it takes so long to reach Tortuguero with buses and... More

This is a great eco lodge where you will be able to experience Costa Rican rain forest at its best. The lodge offers very spacious and comfortable cabanas with one or two beds, safe box, full bathroom with good shower and hot water, ceiling ventilator and big windows protected with mosquito proof nets. Each cabana has a porch with a... More

Booked directly and arrived by charter plane. They stick you in with one of their 'groups' and you have no choice or flexibility from that point. We were 'assigned' to the group of Sebastian, who was bringing a tour group the next day. We had to eat all meals only with the people from that group, all strangers to us... More

I have just read a review from Jane G on tripAdviser and it is a great one. If you're looking for any kind of luxury do not come here, The room is very basic. One up from shack Nowhere to unpack or hang anything. The whole three nights we were here were disappointing mainly due to the very heavy thunder... More

I found the location of Mawamba Lodge was really special. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful and the facilities were great. The food was excellent, it was delicious and so fresh. The rooms were extremely hot, there is no air conditioning at the hotel just ceiling fans, which did very little other than push hot air around, aside from... More

Our visit to Mawamba began with our guide telling us that Mawamba is lodge and not a hotel. I think that was a great way to begin. If you are looking for a foo-foo upscale Costa Rica experience, this is not the place for you. Mawamba is a rustic lodge in the jungle with outstanding service and experiences. For reference,... Negatives Standard room very basic - taking the shack in the middle of the jungle a bit too far No drawers, no wardrobe just some basic shelves ( very basic) on the wall and hooks with a few hangers. Lighting so low it felt like you were almost blind - particularly in the bathroom. Also the pathways back to rooms... More

My wife and I visited Mawamba Lodge on the first stop of our Honeymoon in Costa Rica. We stayed for two nights in April 2016. We travelled from San Jose and it took around 3-4 hours, 2 by coach then 1.5 by boat. Its a long way but totally worth it! The lodge is beautiful! Nicely laid out. Beach one... More

Dear SimmoTripAdv, Thank you so much for your detailed, personal and interesting review about Mawamba Lodge and the visit to Tortuguero National Park. Yes, getting to Tortuguero is a whole adventure by itself! I was a little wary about coming here as I thought it would be very touristy. The journey here from San Jose took about 5 hours, partly because we were the first pick up and we drove around San Jose for an hour before transferring to the Mwamba Lodge coach. The coach is comfortable, you stop for breakfast on the... More
