Nestled among trees, Evergreen Lodge offers an organic retreat appreciated by many for its proximity to nature and parks. While the cabins provide a comfortable and spacious experience, some guests have noted a lack of air conditioning and furniture, as well as concerns over cleanliness. The atmosphere is praised for its down-to-earth vibe, but the value is questioned due to the costly tours and early closures. Service quality varies, with reports of both helpfulness and disorganization, and although the grounds are mostly well-maintained, the limited amenities, including towel drying options, have been called out by visitors.

We spent two nights here and had a good time in this very special location. There are no roads to Tortuguero, and this lodge, the other lodges in the area and the village of Tortuguero are all reached by water. The boat taking our tour group to the lodge, along with many other boats, leaves from a muddy riverbank about an hour’s journey down the river to the lodge. The luggage goes in a separate boat. The transit looks a bit chaotic, but seems to work very efficiently, with the luggage already our room when we arrived.

The cabins at the lodge are spread out over a large site. Ours had lots of room, and was comfortable. There is no air conditioning: instead, there is no glass in the windows, just insect screens. This does mean that it can be noisy: howler monkeys, frogs and other wildlife, and in our case, very heavy rain on the tin roof. However, I think this is acceptable, given all the benefits of staying in the rain forest. The bathroom was very old-fashioned, with an ancient shower, and no shelving: it really needs to be updated.

It’s not ‘gourmet’ food at lunch and dinner, with a limited choice, but it is not surprising given the remote location. While the food is plain, it has good quality ingredients, is well prepared, and very tasty. Breakfasts also have a limited choice, but again were good quality. The staff at the lodge were efficient and helpful.

The real benefit of being here is the closeness to nature - see the small crocodile in the stream in the lodge grounds!

We stayed here as part of a tour. The grounds of the property are very impressive and I was so excited when we saw lots of monkeys wondering around.

The rooms were basic but clean, the only thing I will point out is that you don’t have windows it is mesh, that said the bugs can’t get through it. However you will be awake early because of the wildlife which we didn’t mind as it’s all part of the experience staying in the rainforest.

The food wasn’t amazing and quite a few people become poorly whilst we stayed here which then put me off eating much. I understand it’s a remote place where all ingredients have to come via boat so I guess options are limited. The bar staff weren’t the friendliest we felt like we were an inconvenience to them when asking for a drink. We did love the bar overlooking the river.

We did a fantastic boat ride spotting wildlife and visited the village nearby. We did spend a few hours by the pool which was nice. There is also lots of wildlife around the grounds, I was fascinated by the land crabs.

Overall the experience of staying here was good being in the thick of the rainforest was quite special.

Had two nights at this lovely place. We arrived by boat which took an hour and a half. We were welcomed with a cold drink. Check in was surprising quick considering how many people arrived at the same time.

We had a lovely spacious lodge. We loved the fact that the room had no windows just mesh to keep the insects out. This allows you to hear the noises of the forest as you go to sleep.

We had a trip into Tortuguero and a canal trip whilst there. We also had a chance to use the swimming pool.

The meals were included and these were fine, especially the omelette for breakfast. Staff were all really friendly.

This is a really difficult place to review. There are definitely up and down aspects. It does appear the accomodation options are limited in Tortuguero so this may be amongst better of a mediocre bunch.
The good: Wildlife and Tortuguero National Park. There is so much to see, even within the hotel we saw capuchins, howlers, spider monkeys and toucans. The included boat tour was good for seeing even more.
The not so good: Food - choices are very limited, even more so for those with dietary restrictions. My wife is coeliac and was basically offered grilled fish for every meal. The staff really did try but very limited, and for the kids (and mine aren't picky) the choice wasnt great fir them. The food is also very basic. This is not entirely unexpected for a place not accessible by boat, however.
I would not describe it as family friendly either. There is no option to eat outside of proscribed meal times, which is difficult for kids too, drinks only available at the bars. Even the water is via slightly warm dispensers. There is nowhere else to buy anything at all. As there is not a lot to do other than tours, at certain times the pool is very crowded. This means plenty of disapproving tutting and muttering from octogenarians when the kids are trying to enjoy the pool, and then slightly drunk Americans at sundown.
The staff are very hit and miss, some are very helpful, some simply shrug and say they don't know, and general information is hard to come by. When we arrived we at 13.30 we were told there was a tour to the town at 14.45, which we declined to do as the kids were tired, and told reception a further time we would not be doing, but the guide hunted us down anyway and seemed surprised and slightly offended when we didn't want to go.
Rooms have no windows only a screen mesh, so howlers will wake you up early morning, which actually I don't mind, but I do mind the loud American next door having a phone conversation at 4.30am, or the couple having an arguement at 11pm. There is little privacy.
Environment is the watch word in Costa Rica, but they are still using plastic straws and our towels were washed daily (I know, worse things happen) despite us hanging them up to retain them for more than one day.
Overall tortuguero is fantastic, but go first as the accomodation is well below the standard of that which we have experienced in Costa Rica elsewhere (and that's fine, if you are expecting it) and I feel it would be something of an anticlimax if down towards the end of a trip.

The rooms are pretty basic lodge rooms,, en suite. They don't have air conditioning but neither do they havd windows (just mesh fly screens) so you're cool enough. The food is excellent and served by friendly staff, you will be seated on a shared table but that's how you meet lovely interesting people. The tours are fantastic we saw sl9th, spider monkeys, white faced monkeys, howlef monkeys countless differdnt spevies of birds a badilisk and iguanas! Cannot praise them enough.

We enjoyed two nights at the Evergreen Lodge, as part of a tour. The lodge is on the river, requiring a boat for most travel. Individual cabins were sparse and rustic but clean and comfortable, even with towel creatures each day. Cabins are connected by boardwalks over lush underlying growth (swampy in wet season?). There is no TV, radio, or phone--just wildlife, pool, dining/bars, and massage services. Total escape that forces you to wind down. The buffet food was good. Wifi was limited to the Reception area, i.e. in the middle of the grounds. Bring or request hair dryer. Monkeys and birds abound! Windows have screens but not glass, sometimes letting in sounds of early rising wildlife and late night partiers.

You must take a boat to reach this remote and beautiful property. Mini lodges are connected by paved sidewalks. This is the Costa Rica coastline and you should expect a warm and humid climate. The rooms have screened windows and ceiling fans. The food is traditional rice and beans, veggies, fish, and some yummy desserts. The pools are well kept, and one of my highlights was the Zip lining experience right on property. There are opportunities for day trips in the area to see the canals and Tortuguero.

Arriving by boat, this lodge is snuggled alongside the river. The rooms are linked by solid walkways and easy accessible. Our room was comfortable with two large beds, a well equipped bathroom. The room had one ceiling fan, which was fine this time of year, the windows are mesh are to the best of any breeze. The swimming pool area has a bar, all clean and tidy. The food was based on a buffet - Costa Rican food. It was ok, nothing out of the ordinary.
The reason you are there though is to enjoy the wildlife and surroundings. Both of which were exceptional and the tour guides from the lodge were very good. I would recommend a visit to the town which is small but interesting. Very enjoyable

The lodge has rooms nestled in the jungle. Very clean, with ceiling fans, get to wake up in the morning to birds and howler monkeys. The food at the restaurant was typical Costa Rican, but very good. Very nice swimming pools to cool off. Also, were a couple of paths through the jungle on concrete that you could walk by yourself and see birds, lizards, monkeys, etc.

Very good welcome at reception and very efficient check in. The room was spacious with a large bathroom. The windows have no glass but very efficient netting to prevent bugs getting in. The pool is lovely. Staff were polite and helpful. The location in the forest is wonderful and the tours were excellent.
Two negative points.
1. The lodge is in a forest . We expected high humidity but this meant that towels and damp clothes never dried out. It would be really good to have some means of drying towels.
2. The food was good but the meal service is terrible. The time is set for tourists from the USA. Tourists from Europe have to eat earlier than they would normally. The dining hall is like going back to school. You have to queue for your meal and cannot serve yourself. We did in fact share the dining hall with 30 school pupils from the USA. Their behaviour was really very good but it just added to the feeling of queuing for a school meal.
Theoretically dinner goes on until 8. However if you try to eat later you will have no choice of food so if you don’t like what is left- too bad. We arrived 40 minutes after the dinner time started and were given one choice only. There was no dessert presumably because previous diners had helped themselves to 2 desserts.
Breakfast is the same - a huge queue for cooked eggs.
This queuing is not typical of Costa Rica. Our other hotels and lodges have had different systems. They also replenish the dishes on offer so that all guests have a choice. I would therefore suggest to the resort manager that you need to think about the needs of your European guests.

Good morning Sally We hope you're doing well You'll need to drive to La Pavona, it's a local pier that we use to embark to Tortuguero. You just need to arrive before 10:00 am so you can join the tour group that will enter. You can park over there and pay their fee for parking, preferably in cash It's preferable to get there in a 4x4 car or an SUV since it's a gravel road. Thank you, hope you have a great day!

Is there a trip to see the turtles from this lodge?
Answer from NJ traveler0922
Haddon Heights, New Jersey21 contributions5 helpful votes
We didn’t see any turtles during our visit in February. They’re only active certain time of year, possibly July- October. As for currency, many places took either colones( Costa Rican currency) or US dollars. Don’t know about British currency being accepted. I usually use a credit card during travel to avoid accumulating unneeded foreign currency.
