After a ride on the river to reach this lodge, We were given a warm welcome by the lady manager, and given an excellent welcome drink, the best we had in Costa Rica. Unfortunately we were disappointed with the accommodation. Very dark and dingy, no soft chairs in room, and very little in the way of storage or hooks. If you have noisy neighbours you are unlikely to get much sleep. We had two very loud ladies in the cabin next to ours, and they were also talking and their voices carried extremely well, as you do not have windows in the lodges, just netting to keep out the insects. Huge shower, with shower curtain. It reminded us of a backpackers accommodation. The food was mass produced, felt like school dinners, not always hot, which is always a worry when they are serving so many people. The good thing about breakfast was that they had an omelette station and you could choose your ingredients. The pool area was very pleasant, but could have been cleaner. The grounds were excellent for spotting wildlife, including capuchin monkeys, a huge variety of birds, iguanas and frogs. Staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. Didn't like their use of plastic considering how environmentally aware Costa Rica is, they could do much better by not using plastic straws and bottles.

The staff were lovely and the cabins were very comfortable. Just look along the paths to find Poison dart frogs, in the trees for monkeys and the streams for caymen. Lots of colourful birds sit in the trees.

Arriving at Evergreen Lodge to a refreshing cocktail after a day of travelling from San Jose was hugely welcoming! The boat trip to the hotel is about 1.5 hours, and is your first opportunity to spot wildlife. The hotel is riverside, so apart from walking around the gardens, you go on your tours by boat, which is pretty magical. There is wildlife everywhere - on our first trip we saw sloths, monkeys, iguanas, birds, caiman, frogs and snakes. The monkeys come into the hotel grounds and if you wake up early, make us of it by going wildlife watching in the gardens. The rooms are basic but comfortable. There is no aircon, but the fans work well and we weren't uncomfortable. Because there are no windows, just mozzie nets, you get to go to sleep and wake up to the sounds of the forest, which is absolutely amazing. The food served was always extremely tasty and you are seated with others, which means you get to know people travelling with you and we met some really fantastic people. It was great to catch up with them throughout the day and hear what we'd all been up to! The staff are absolutely fantastic - you are made to feel so welcome and because the hotel is so small, they remember you and make efforts to check in and see how your day is going. I would highly recommend Evergreen Lodge, the team are brilliant, the guides are fantastic and the location is outstanding.

We enjoyed two nights at the Evergreen Lodge, as part of a tour. The lodge is on the river, requiring a boat for most travel. Individual cabins were sparse and rustic but clean and comfortable, even with towel creatures each day. Cabins are connected by boardwalks over lush underlying growth (swampy in wet season?). There is no TV, radio, or phone--just wildlife, pool, dining/bars, and massage services. Total escape that forces you to wind down. The buffet food was good. Wifi was limited to the Reception area, i.e. in the middle of the grounds. Bring or request hair dryer. Monkeys and birds abound! Windows have screens but not glass, sometimes letting in sounds of early rising wildlife and late night partiers.

Actually the lodges work quite well and, in spirit, reminded me of the lodges in US park areas. Don't be put off by the lack of air con - the building design and a good ceiling fan were quite effective at keeping the room col enough for even a Brit to sleep. However, small things irritated, which was a shame: there were no chairs in the room, meals are served on a very tight schedule with staff very focused on getting completion, and on the one night we wanted a night cap, we discovered the bars all closed at 9pm! Suggest you check to see if other accommodation in the area has a more modern view of customer service.
