Mother Dear is unique. It is not a fancy hotel. To us it was like living in a luxury treehouse. It was a perfect setting. The cottages were stunning with everything you would want. Kitchen, wonderful bathroom, king size bed, sitting room which opened up to a deck/porch that overlooked the most beautiful tropical garden and the Caribbean Sea. Every... More

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We love it when friends come with other friends and stay in both units, allowing for shared experiences & companionship, yet still enjoying the privacy and separation that the cottages allow. Thank you so very much! More

Debbie and Jimmy have built a private piece of paradise on Playa Negra just outside of Puerto Viejo. My wife and I and my sister and brother-in-law, (all in our 60's) arrived at dark. We were greeted at the gate by Deb and Jim. Each couple was given the tour of their own private cottage on stilts. These two small... More

Your review and your kind words are much appreciated, notably viewed through the eyes of a seasoned traveler (as I remember, you traveled in Colombia, Panama, and then the Pacific coast of Costa Rica before coming to the Caribbean). Muchas gracias, Jimmy More

We were fortunate to be able to spend 5 nights at Mother Dear in March, and loved it all. The cottages are so much more than you could ask for and the scenery and relaxing ocean sounds are to die for. It is like the owners tried to supply and create a vacation paradise that they themselves would love. Each... More

If you want a CLEAN SAFE and all around good place to stay this is the place. If you need room service you stayed in the wrong country. For those of you who want the adventure but a really good place to lay your head at the end of the day this is the spot. Jimmy and Debbie were excellent... More

Nice words...thanks. And thanks for all your design insights while you were here. Although you guys were only here 3 nights, I think you made it seemed longer. Again, we enjoyed meeting you and hope to see you again. More

We just returned from a 10 day stay at Mother Dear, and the cottage was like a dream. It was the perfect setting- nestled in a jungle-like garden that opened up onto the beautiful black sand beach. Every night we slept to the sounds of the surf. The cottage was even better than the photos on the website. Simply lovely.... More

Your kind words are much appreciated. 10 days can go by so quickly, but you guys appeared to have found a way to slow down time! Of course, having private massages on your porch helps a lot. Please come again when the Maine weather dictates and thanks for leaving us the Eric Clapton book. More

Every detail, no matter how small seemed to be addressed here. Snacks, beverages and drinking water were stocked, even fresh non tap water ice cubes were ready after a long journey. Room, bathroom and deck were much larger than the photos and there was storage everywhere. Great shower and water pressure and bed was large and comfy. We stayed at... More

Spent five days in cottage 1 in early February 2016. The cottage is very well designed and clean. Since there is no insulation in the walls, nifty shelves and rods have been inserted in all the right places. There is no AC but all of the windows and upper walls are completely screened so it is possible to get good... More

Thanks for your thoughtful & detailed review, and I totally empathize about the weather: when I worked in the US, it was guaranteed that while on my yearly vacation it would most assuredly rain! But we're glad you liked the cottage and the setting, and we especially loved the lean-to you guys erected on the beach, which, btw, was used... More

We arrived at Mother Dear after a long day of rafting. Jimmy and Debbie gave us a warm welcome and showed us around. We were so tired that we did not want to go anywhere. The fridge was filled with drinks, a couple of beers and snacks. There was coffee, milk, sugar and croissants for breakfast next morning. Perfect. The... More

We had such a fabulous stay at Mother Dear Cottages in October 2011 that we decided to go back in January 2015 - and this time we brought our friends. We (and they) were not disappointed! Mother Dear was the most perfect place for my husband and I to stay during our week in Puerto Viejo. Jimmy and Debbie, the owners, built the most fabulous cottages on the most beautiful piece of land in town. Mother Dear is one of the few properties I have seen in the area that is actually right on the beach... More

Two hand-crafted hardwood cottages by the sea. Built for maximum air circulation, the cottages are elevated, cooled by ocean breezes during the day and mountain backdrafts at night. Beach music and forest sounds help you rest, relax, and renew. Beautiful hardwood floors and custom furniture make for a warm and cozy nest.
