Chilamate Rainforest retreat is a super family run venture. It has at its heart core values that deserve to make it successful. As one of the last guests to stay before Coronavirus forced its (I hope temporary) closure, I wish it every success when it reopens after things return to normal. It’s a lovely place that I cannot recommend enough. The owners and staff are so friendly, the environment lovely. The courtesy morning walk revealed a huge range of animals, and the night walk was fantastic. Go stay there!

Had an amazing few days here with my 4 yr old daughter. Due to some building work, we got upgraded to the fantastic family suite, which had a special little room where we could observe jungle life. Meghan and her team (especially Roger) were super friendly, and always available for any question or booking. We went on 2 of the many tours they offer - many of which are partnerships with local people - trying to give employment to the local community - the river tour and the organic farm tour. I would highly recommend the organic farm tour. My 4 yr old was kept entertained by playing with Daniel's grandson and holding all the little piglets. Amazing free breakfast and dinner was great too (though a little pricey) . Would highly recommend this place as the owners are so committed to the local community and they are exemplary when it comes to community based tourism.

Room was very comfortable. Bats sleeping outside on the veranda rafters. Did the night walk and day walk around the grounds and saw snakes, hummingbirds asleep in their nests, sloths. Their is a longer path into the grounds that is definitely jungle judging by the paw prints in the mud. Recommend checking about how much of path is open before setting out. Meghan and husband were charming and helpful. Food was top notch and varied. Walking distance to the nearby Chocolate tour. We should have booked for longer.

Room Tip: The monkeys wake you up in the morning so room location does not matter.

We stayed in the top floor of the Jungle Lodge with our 5 kids, and it was a great experience. The guided hike that came with our stay got my kids geared up to spot wildlife throughout our stay and they did! Colorful frogs, howler monkeys, iguanas, rhinoceros beetles and more. The staff were very warm and friendly, the variety of fresh fruit at breakfast was a big hit with my crew, and we came away happy to have had the chance to meet wonderful people doing great things for their community.

My husband and I, in our 80's, returned this year to Chilamate after a wonderful first visit last year. Everything about Chilamate is a great place to visit: attractive and comfortable accommodation in a wonderful setting bordering the Sarapiqui river (with a swimming hole); the commitment to preserving the rainforest; support for the local community - e.g.the local school, encouraging and marketing local organic food production; delicious fresh food; guided nature walks on the property; excursions nearby e.g. La Selva research station, nearby chocolate plantation, river trips, whitewater rafting; and most importantly a welcoming staff. During our visits there were several young and in some cases 3-generation families; small birding groups; and couples. Something for everyone.
