We stayed at the Beach Camp (in Playa Pelada) not the Rainforest Retreat. Stayed for a month in the converted school bus they have down there and loved it! Nice location close to the beach (5 mins to Pelada and 15 to the surf beach of Guiones), all the guys working there were super friendly and we had our own kitchen area and bathroom which got cleaned regularly, as well as fresh towels. There are bikes available to use which makes getting into town and shops really easy. Nice chilled atmosphere and a very friendly dog who came with us to the beach every day. Good wifi also. There are rooms and tents on offer as well as the bus. Would give an even higher rating if I could!
Thanks guys 🙏

The place we stayed last year was full, so our agent recommended Chilamate Rainforest Eco Lodge as an alternative. We were so pleased that she did. Chilamate was wonderful in so many ways and we hope to return next year. The owners, Meghan and Davis, are lovely and kind people who are matching their work to their values. The place is beautiful, family friendly and very ecologically minded and the staff are locals who are friendly, respectful and eager to provide exceptional customer service. The food was delicious and healthy. The dining area is large, with spaces for gathering with other guests and just hanging out. There is a bar, games area for children and adults, and a small shop with souvenirs, coffee and nice t-shirts and woodworking. Coffee, tea, snacks and a water cooler are available 24/7. The grounds are lovely, filled with beautiful flora and fauna. They work hard to maintain the facilities and the grounds, while always keeping the natural integrity of the rainforest. They offer numerous activities on site and in the community and we signed up for several: a cooking class with a local matriarch Dina who lived a short walk away, a medicinal/herbal botany experience also with a local neighbor, Jaime, and an early morning birding experience with Jainer who is well known for his amazing knowledge. We saw all kinds of birds and monkeys and iguanas on the property and enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks on our porch. This is rainforest so be prepared for the possibility of lots of rain, even multiple times a day. We were looking for a week away in the rainforest, with lots of trails and opportunities for birding and wildlife sighting and relaxing environment to read and walk. We got this for sure but so much more. Thank you Meghan and Davis and your entire crew including Hannah, Naomi and Samantha, for an authentic and wonderful experience.

My wife and I knew and loved Chilamate from our many previous visits. This time we brought our two grandsons (ages 7 and 4) and their parents. Together we stayed for a full week.

We love the comfortable, family atmosphere of the lodge. It is a great location for birding, swimming and rafting. We also took advantage of the local Chocolate Tour, the nocturnal walk and the early morning bird walk (so many, diverse and colorful birds!). And there was always time for late afternoon relaxation.

Our grandsons had never visited Cost Rica. They flourished here, even attempted speaking some Spanish

There is a real family atmosphere to Chilamate. Meghan and Davis promote the local community, and their care is evident in the conscientious friendliness of the staff. In addition, Meghan gave us great advice for local activities, and she facilitated scheduling and payment. We did not have to worry about prices or tips. She knows the community, and she took care of all the details for us.

My 7 year old and I really liked this family friendly, rustic rain forest retreat. Lots of delicious breakfast choices, great connections to tours that support the local community and a friendly multigenerational vibe. The morning alarm clock is the sound of howler monkeys and the night time nature sound of frogs and cicadas chirp you to sleep. We stayed in the family suite to have access to a kitchen, as the (delicious, but not included) dinner was our of our price range. This was a great space for us and included comfy beds, a hammock and a gigantic shower. It's nice to have the option of a screen-free vacation with no TV, but , if you need it, there's good wifi signal in common spaces. Staff and their family were super friendly.

We spent 2 lovely days at this eco resort. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. But more important, they take the initiative to make you feel part of the “ family “. We made several walks in the forest with local guides, included in the price of your stay. They are very passionate about conservation and are very knowledgeable. And have a good sense of humor.
The food was delicious and fresh and it’s served with a smile.

Had an amazing few days here with my 4 yr old daughter. Due to some building work, we got upgraded to the fantastic family suite, which had a special little room where we could observe jungle life. Meghan and her team (especially Roger) were super friendly, and always available for any question or booking. We went on 2 of the many tours they offer - many of which are partnerships with local people - trying to give employment to the local community - the river tour and the organic farm tour. I would highly recommend the organic farm tour. My 4 yr old was kept entertained by playing with Daniel's grandson and holding all the little piglets. Amazing free breakfast and dinner was great too (though a little pricey) . Would highly recommend this place as the owners are so committed to the local community and they are exemplary when it comes to community based tourism.

What a peaceful & serene place to stay. Meghan & Davis were extremely helpful & accommodating & the staff was very kind. The food for breakfast was delicious and for dinner we walked to a nearby soda for some good food as well. The walk in the rainforest afforded us a great deal of wildlife viewing and the swim hole in the river was the perfect way to cool off from our hike. This family-owned lodge is doing wonderful things for their community and we are happy to support their endeavors. Highly recommend this place!

Choosing Chilamate Eco Retreat exceeds a person's hope for a premier rainforest rejuvenation. Personal attention by staff matches the visitor's individual or group travel intention. If you want massage, a guided tour (ie bird, chocolate, coffee, etc), swimming, rafting, kayaking, zip line, hiking, assistance with taxi or bus, delicious food made with local ingredients and lovingly prepared, this is the place. Chilamate deeply connects to community by embracing the local talents and hand produced treasures as integral to retreat lifestyle.
Beyond service, the family who manages the accommodations, responds to land ecology needs. This attention has been going on for decades as one of the owners (and now his offspring) was born and has ground up in the region. Chilamate is sensitive to the needs of youth and participates in providing youth athletic groups, fun and educational visits to the rainforest, and more.
The grounds are meticulously kept, respecting natural order. Families with children come from around the world to this affordable, extremely sensitive environment.

A wonderful family run conservative lodge with extensive groups as the perfect end to our recent trip to Costa Rica. So much wildlife so close and it was wonderful just to relax and take it all in.

There is a delicious breakfast included and we opted to have the evening meal each night (for an additional US $20 which was great value). A highlight was the guided night tour with naturalist William who enthusiastically showed us many nocturnal creatures including the incredible red eyed from. Don’t miss it!

Chilamate was a highlight of our Costa Rica trip. It is tucked away in the rain forest which means heat, humidity, and lots of animals and bugs! Our party of 14 (6 adults, 8 kids) had a great stay. While the heat and humidity were high, we leaned into all the rainforest had to offer.

The staff is amazing and took very good care of us. We ate dinners at the Ecolodge given that it gets dark early and the walk to sodas was ~10mins. The buffet style was a hit with the kids.

We did the rainforest walk in the morning and then walked to the chocolate tour, which was also a highlight - highly recommend!

Overall a great stay and would highly recommend.

How do we get there from San Jose? We don't want to have to rent a car.
2 contributions4 helpful votes
Hello! From San Jose we can arrange for a private driver to pick you up. The cost is $130 door to door and you are welcome to stop along the way. The trip is 1.5-2 hours, depending on traffic. You can also take the public bus here from the Guapileños-Caribeños-Gran Caribe bus terminal directly to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui (not Talamanaca!). The bus ride is about 2-2.5 hours and is very inexpensive. Once you arrive at the terminal in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui you can catch another bus here to Chilamate and get off in front of the Chilamate School, cross the road and then the bridge over the Sarapiqui River and our place is on the right, down the path, along the rivers edge. You can also get a taxi from the terminal for $6-8 and they will take you directly to our walking entrance. Have our phone number handy incase they don't know where we are! (8992-1611). Pura Vida!!

We are coming to stay in 24th and 25th February. Would it be possible to have the bed fitted with a mosquito net?
2 contributions4 helpful votes
Hello! I am sorry, I just saw this message!! Our private rooms are all screened and we don't have problems with mosquitoes. In the Jungle House and hostal all of the beds have bug nets! I hope this is helpful to others, even if it is not relevant to you anymore. Pura Vida from Chilamate!
