Detailed Reviews
I stayed for 8 (then chose to return for another week) nights with my 4yr son and 61yr mom who was quite nervous to venture to Central America.
There are few people in this world that truly treat you like family on first meeting: Omar is a gem on this earth. To come to a foreign country, merely book a hotel based on the countless accolades then suddenly feel at home is rare, and I am a relatively experienced traveler.
Omar has a large heart and open arms to welcome and embrace introducing those of us far from savvy of Tico culture, to necessities and all that makes this country so special. He is also a pro chef (literally) and prepared a special surprise breakfast, obviously catered specifically to us (and the picky eating of my 4yr old son he affectionately called his little angel) in addition to the delicious market fruit, smoothies and café (Britt) each morning. Que delicioso.
I studied at a lovely Spanish Language School, Intercultra – 5min walk from Hotel Hojarascas. For a student that doesn’t want the house aspect of the homestay experience but desires a place to call home and can afford the hotel this would be THE place to stay. A huge treat for me was talking to Omar – he speaks extremely clearly and slowly – it like extra Spanish class!
The very minor (for me) inconveniences of the hotel (for example a little dust under the bed, a little noise- the windows are somewhat opened in connection throughout the place, proximity to church bells – also a navigational asset) are swiftly forgetten as one would in the home of a beloved relative.
He is quite proud of his greenery which gives this city property a charming tropical feel inside. It also feels extremely safe – doors always locked unless there is someone at the front desk, and key system quite functional.
My profession is one filled with a constant requirement to do evaluations, so I very rarely write one if not absolutely necessary. But this man, his family, and their endearing little hotel are more than worthy of a novel, and more than the hopefully generous enough tip I gave at the end of my stay.

There are plenty of places to stay in Heredia. The Hotel Hojarascas is absolutely worth the small price premium. If you need to stay in Heredia, look no further! I was absolutely delighted with my weeklong stay at this property.
The owners and their friendly staff took good care of me and provided every service with great diligence and pride.
Heredia is a noisy city. This hotel does a good job to minimize the noise and chaos of the city with clean, comfortable accommodations, a lot of plants and gardens, and small, friendly touches. The hotel feels clean and fresh, a nice oasis among the busy streets.
The daily breakfasts, prepared at whatever time I asked, were a highlight of every day. Plenty of fresh fruit, juices, coffee, and a variety of local main dishes. I could relax and read my book in silence or else have good breakfast conversation with the owners and other guests.
This wouldn’t be a realistic review if I didn’t provide at least a little constructive criticism. If I had to make any complaint, I would say I wished the hotel’s water system had hotter hot water. I could get a good warm shower but that’s about it.
The staff really makes this hotel a “home away from home” and they want you to be satisfied. I have stayed in many hotels around the world and have never had such personal care and attention. They are ready to answer any question with information about the city, buses, taxis, shopping, restaurants, churches, landmarks - anything! I am pleased to say the Hotel Hojarascas deserves it’s #1 rating!

My sister and I stayed one week at this hotel while we were studying Spanish at Intercultura school, a few blocks away. We had a very nice stay : clean and safe room, excellent home-made breakfasts, plenty of information from Omar, one of the owners, who made us feel at home. We had access to the kitchen, which added to the great pleasure of staying there.

I am somewhat perplexed at all the glowing reviews. I agree that the front desk hosts were quite friendly and very helpful, but that is truly the only good thing I can say about this hotel. It is located on a busy street in downtown Heredia but there are not a lot of great walking destinations nearby. We saw the churches and a couple of parks but by 6pm almost everything was shuttered.
The room was not luxurious but it was clean. The mattress was horrible; lots of dips and lumps and only two thin pillows. There is really not a communal or social area in this hotel besides a couple couches in narrow hallways, so since the town was shuttered and we couldn't think of anything else to do we basically sat on our bed and watched TV until it was time to go to sleep.
Breakfast was nice with one hot item, plenty of choice of toast, cheese, jams, drinks, etc.
Even with the free transfer to or from the airport for international flights and the free breakfast I think we paid way too much for what was really an upscale hostel experience. Would not consider returning and am perplexed by the many glowing reviews.

I stayed at Hotel Hojarascas for a week while I was studying Spanish at the Intercultura School. The hotel is family owned and operated and it doesn't take long for one to feel right at home. Omar, one of the owners and an accomplished cook in his own right, prepares a different Costa Rican specialty every morning (the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast) along with fresh local fruit and coffee from none other than Cafe Britt---the local coffee plantation. If your Spanish is not the best, as mine was, Omar will converse with you in slow Costa Rican Spanish. He has a gift for speaking clearly and slowly while emphasizing the right words so that the intermediate Spanish speaker can pick up the gist of what he is saying. Many of the hotel guests were Costa Rican, and they would often join in conversations at the breakfast table. As a result, I conversed about topics I never thought possible given my level. I learned a lot about Costa Rican culture and even picked up a little Costa Rican slang. :)
The rooms are comfortable and spacious. The water is filtered so you can fill up your water bottle right from the spigot. The WIFI signal is strong. They will even let you do your laundry for a small fee.
The next time I am in Heredia I would not hesitate to stay at Hotel Hojarascas again. The breakfast and conversation cannot be matched.

Really a great place. Perfect spotless rooms, great spreads for breakfast, and a super-friendly family, all in a town that is way nicer than San Jose. The price might seem steep if you are on a budget, but with all the perks (free internet, laundry, airport transfer, family atmosphere complete with grandma who kisses you before bed) it is a steal.
If you are having to spend a night or two in San Jose, my advice is just come here, 20 minutes from downtown by cheap bus, and closer to the int´l airport.

This hotel is right in the middle of Heredia downtown, so everything you need is near the hotel.
About the hotel, I have to say that the service was really great. The front desk guy was very kind and very polite.
The room was very clean and it was really nice. It had WIFI, and small TV and hot water for the shower. Also the hotel has a small kitchen where you can keep food if you want.
It does have a parking lot where you can leave your car but it's located about three blocks away from the hotel and it also has a reserved parking space right in the front of the hotel so you can park there while you check-in and check-out.

I stayed at Hotel Hojarascas for a week while studying at the Centro de Idiomas Intercultura. The hotel is centrally located in Heredia, close to the Central Market, Intercultura and the Universidad Nacional, and is only a 15 taxi ride from the San José airport. The rooms are clean and there is ample storage for clothing. The bathroom is spacious with hot water (which I heard is not always the norm in Costa Rica). There is free Wi-fi and the signal works all the time! The best part about my stay was the daily Costa Rican breakfast prepared by José Omar, one of the owners. Each morning I experienced a different Costa Rican dish, such as tortas de arracache or chorreadas de maíz, served with fresh coffee from the local Café Britt, a homemade fruit juice and an abundance of delicious and beautifully arranged fruits – papaya, pineapple, mango, strawberries, watermelon, and banana. I enjoyed eating this healthy breakfast while conversing with Omar in Spanish. He is a great conversationalist, very hospitable, and an excellent cook! Overall, I recommend staying at this hotel if you are traveling to Heredia or visiting nearby attractions.

My daughter who is studying at Ulatina in Heredia had a recommendation from her professor for me to stay at Hotel Hojarascas; excellent choice. José Omar is the best! He waited for me; I had a 1:35 am flight, was so professional, warm, welcoming and helpful. Anticipated my every need: wake up call, calling a taxi, local prices/money exchange/attempting to print my boarding pass, suggesting what to take on my excursion with my daughter and her college classmates etc. I was able to practice my Spanish! My room was clean, the bed was firm, just the way I like it! It was an informative experience as well. José shared about his beautiful country, the taxi drivers were also friendly and helpful; one helped me find my daughter's host family's home; houses nor streets were numbered or named! José is also a great cook, he prepared and served fresh local fruits and a typical special occasion breakfast; absolutely delicious. The juice is a puree of many fruits! I saw they had a laundry service, due to the warm weather the windows were opened; a welcomed change from the frigid north. Overall it was an excellent experience, I highly recommend Hojarascas. My only doubt was I never received a confirmation after reserving a room. I called to find out they were waiting with open arms! They also offer long stays; daughter's professor stays every year for the Winter Session. Can't wait to go back and definitely will stay at Hotel Hojarascas!

Bustling Heredia can be intimidating, but what a great comerece town. And the hotel located only a block from the municipal market and many other stores and restaurants made this business trip enjoyable. From the moment I checked in Omar made me feel like one of the family. Having to work late at night he would take care of parking the car from the front door when returning (after 10pm), Always asked what time I wanted breakfast so he would have the hot dish freshing waiting (and the fruit platters and fresh juice....mmm awesome). I always try to find small hotels for my business trips in latin america and this one really proved to me one that I will always come back to when in the area. Rooms are comfortable and clean, good hot water and WIFI. Also the use of the kitchen was an excellent bonus as I always like to refrigerate, warm up and sometimes bring my own food for storage.
