#6 of 119 Specialty lodging in Tamarindo
Travelers' Choice
Costa Rica’s most popular surf camp since 2001! It could be because of our location on one of the world’s most renowned and diverse surf spots, because of our professional ISA certified bilingual instructors, or because we simply know how to live the pura vida Costa Rica lifestyle. Nestled right on one of Guanacaste’s most pristine beaches at the corner of the Tamarindo Estuary, the wind and tidal conditions create separate and distinct wave breaks on one single stretch of shoreline. That is why we have access to waves for all surfing levels right in our front yard! Aside from Tamarindo beach, we are just a short boat or car ride away from a wide array of other types of surf breaks. Whether you are a family with three children of different ages that have never surfed before, or you are World Title holder looking for some fun and fast barrels, we’ve got you covered. WE HANDLE EVERYTHING! Our all inclusive surf packages include airport transportation, accommodations, surfing, surfboards, optional classroom seminars, daily breakfast, and so much more.

I spent a week at Witch's Rock Surf Camp last week with a girl friend. I am an over fifty woman in decent shape and a little surfing experience (no prior lessons). My girlfriend is over forty with no surfing experience. We had no idea what to expect and came with one goal .. catch some waves! There were lots of surfers at the camp and at different experience levels and there are programs for every level. We are beginners, so, of course, we were in the beginner program. The program is very well run and organized without at all taking away from the Pura Vida vibe of the surf camp experience. We had surf lessons with an instructor every day, two days with video analysis of your surfing and additional programs daily including surfing etiquette, proper paddling and strength and balance. Robert August (one of the surfers in Endless Summer) shapes surf boards and has a shop on site. We spent one evening watching Endless Summer with Robert August providing commentary. In between these scheduled activities you have free time to do as you please. There are excursions (we did not do any but some of our group did zip line and atv tours and had a blast), beach chairs for rent (private vendor .. dude on the beach .. who charges you $20 a day for two chairs and an umbrella), massage (which we did ... twice .. right out in front of the hotel under a tree on the beach .. HIGHLY recommend) and of course shopping/eating in the town of Tamarindo which is a short walk up the road from the surf camp. Both my friend and I had a blast learning to surf. She caught some rides and took them all the way to the beach. She paddled back out to the instructor and was looking like a real surfer by the end of the trip. I paddled out to the line up by the second day and managed to catch some of the "green waves" with a little encouragement from my instructor. I felt like a real surfer! We both improved dramatically over the week and I can say with certainty that if you are wondering if you can learn to surf, the answer is YES! You can learn and you don't have to be young and in great physical shape to do it. Plus, you will have a LOT of fun and make new friends. I think that that may have been the best part .. all of us beginners cheering each other on and hanging out in the pool or the restaurant after surfing. The accommodations are basic. Not rough, not the comforts of home. It's a true surf camp. The beds are comfortable. The bedding is adequate. No TV (you don't need one). No chairs in the room (which would have been nice, but you really don't spend much time in your room). Tile floors and a large shower. Everything gets damp and sandy quick and stays that way. But the rooms are big enough to accommodate your board and what else do you need? If you want a surf camp experience this is IT! If you want more luxurious accommodations, you can find them in Tamarindo, but I wouldn't have traded the surf camp experience for better sheets or lounge chairs by the pool. My only complaint is that they were very stingy with the towels. The towels are small and you need to dry off several times a day. Two towels for two people just wasn't enough. Yes, we asked for extra. Daily. And .. two towels. That's it. We gave up and made due. Decided that real surfers "don't need no stinking towels".. LOL. We said Pura Vida and moved on. Your stay at Witch's Rock Surf Camp includes daily breakfast which you can have any time of the day. We bought smoothies in the morning and had our breakfast as lunch after surfing. The smoothies are excellent, we had them every single day. The food at Eat At Joe's (the restaurant) is pretty good and perfect for after surf. You must try the nachos at least once .. they are advertised to be "bigger than your ass" .. and they did not not disappoint. We ate dinner in Tamarindo in the evenings. The Bamboo Sushi restaurant is the bomb .. they will up sell you and I recommend you just order the drinks and sushi that they recommend. It's fun and the drinks are great and the sushi is the best! Also, Patagonia, the Argentinian steak house, is phenomenal. We had filets and sangria .. both were amazing. Every place in Tamarindo accepts US dollars. You don't need to exchange dollars for colones. I also used my credit cards with no problem. The one thing I wish I had done, and recommend, is that you bring a lot of small bills for tips. The restaurants automatically add a 10% tip to your bill. If you want to add more tip you have to do it in cash. You can't add additional tip to your credit card charge. And speaking of tips. It is expected that you tip your surf instructor. We had no idea. Luckily other guests were talking about it. The advanced were tipping up to $20 a day and beginners $10 a day (per person .. not per instructor, so if your instructor has two people each person tips per day). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Witch's Rock Surf Camp. We'll be back .. until then Pura Vida!

I unexpectedly had a week free without my family and decided to do a bucket-list item: surf camp for grown-ups! I am not a yoga/fancy food person, I really just wanted to spend as much time as possible in warm water, improving my surf skills. The camp is exactly as all the reviews suggest: organized (airport pick ups and COVID test done in the camp). The classes were well -organized and my group has excellent instruction. Carlos was amazing!!! Even when some of the other coaches were having some fun and catching their own waves, he stuck with us--helped us paddle out when it was big, etc. For me. he focused on reading the waves, angling in learning to ride the face a little (I am a scaredy cat). I went with 3 friends, all of us are 45-50 yrs old, one complete beginner and otherwise all early learners. We all had a blast. Free breakfast is a nice perk. Rooms are clean and nice (could have used a few more wall hooks for wet suits and towels), A/C was great, wi-fi was just okay, but I wasn't there to be on a device anyway. If I had one complaint, one early session on camp logistics was done in a smallish AV room with way too many people, including the presenter, unmasked. After that, you had your debriefs with your own small group, or instruction was outdoors. I felt safe (re: COVID) almost all the time. I wish we had had one more class with Rafael. Strength and balance training was really good and he is a good instructor. Basically, what you read about is exactly what this place is--really nice people. great beginners beach, easy walk to lots of places to eat (very touristy though). Like most reviewers, I plan on returning (this time with the fam) as soon as possible!
