RIO PERDIDO is in Guanacaste, 60 minutes southeast of Liberia's international airport, near the base of the Miravalles Volcano. Regional attractions include Rincon de la Vieja Volcano and Palo Verde National Park. The centerpiece of the 600-acre private reserve is a unique THERMAL RIVER that runs for over a mile along the base of a rocky gorge. Visitors access the hot river by descending stone stairwells and trails. There are a couple of dozen untouched river pools to swim in. The ARCHITECTURALLY AWARDED restaurant has sweeping terraces that afford views of the canyons, volcanoes and the Miravalles dwarf forest. There is a full-service spa, a bar/lounge, and 3 hot mineral pools with floating sun decks and wet bar. There are 15 miles of hiking and biking trails. Breakfast, wireless internet and guest parking are complimentary. The staff can provide 24 hours concierge services, tour/ticket assistance and wedding services.

Pretty sure they thought we were the advance scouts for Queen Elizabeth's visit. I never told them otherwise. From the moment we stepped onto the property, we were warmly greeted and thoroughly pampered. Welcome drink, in-depth explanation of amenities and routines, unhurried check in procedure followed by a golf cart ride to our bungalow above the river. The bungalow was comfortable to the max. Great AC, nice shower, luxury bedding, outside hammocks to listen to the river rushing below and watch nature. Bedside reading light was a complaint of mine...you have to complain about something, right? WIFI was great. We are an older couple (+/- 70) who feel our age (sometimes). We took our time on the steps (STEPS!) leading to the thermal river. I was glad we brought our walking sticks, but there was a secure rope handrail all the way down. The easiest entry to the water wasn't obvious. Caution was rewarded with a unique experience in a warm river despite the rainfall stirring the waters to an earthy tone. I expect the water level was higher than dry season and a swifter water flow, too. Your mileage may vary. Wait staff in the restaurant are to be cherished. They tolerated my terrible Spanish, correcting me and supplying words when my brain's Language Rolodex wouldn't. Breakfast was enormous, so we typically had a snack at the pool bar in the afternoon. Try a fruity drink at the pool bar. I can recommend passion fruit with basil, but go wild on your own. Dinner menu will have something for all tastes. For our visit, the chef was heavily into whole peppercorns...and I was not a fan. This is a personal note and not a complaint about food quality, which was excellent. There are plenty of activities for families and young adults. Hiking, biking, etc. My favorite here? The thermal pools. I don't know the technology behind these pristine waters, but of the 3 pools, there was always a Goldilocks temperature for me. Enjoy.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Rio perdido. It’s a beautiful location & the staff are helpful. PROS: - staff are very friendly and speak good English (and even put up with my attempt at Spanish) - the breakfast was good - the rooms are lovely and the bed very comfy - great showers and the hammocks outside the bungalows very nice touch - the thermal pools are great CONS: - you should really stay for more than 1 night as (in my opinion) the effort to get there is not worth it for one day, in addition we visited during rainy season (which we were well aware of at the time) and so it rained during majority of our stay which limited our ability to do things - this is our fault but is why I say stay more than 1 night . I understand the mgmt used to have a more than 1 night stay policy but it was lifted recently so something to consider - you need a car to get here, shuttles are extremely expensive due to the isolated location - the food at dinner and lunch is good but probably not on the same level as the architecture and surroundings of the property and could be improved given there’s only one option for eating We never got to use the thermal river as it rained a lot during our stay and hence the river was extremely fast flowing. This was a shame as others have rated it highly. This is beautiful location but more suited to people who have a car and are staying for at least 3 nights +

Each bungalow stands alone in the forest. Wake up to the sound of the Rio Perdido River, birds and howler monkeys. Hike around multiple hundreds of acres of forests and canyons. Relax in natural thermal pools in the Rio Perdido river. White water tube down the Naranjo (sic) River - We did and it was a blast! (PS I’m 73. Christian was awesome at keeping the ride safe but exciting. Restaurant offered incredible meal options. Fruit, exotic juices, great coffee and attentive service. The staff were great at carting us to and from our rooms when the rains popped up. All of our requests and needs were immediately attended to with “mucho gusto”!

My 18 year old grandson and I just spent 4 nights in Rio Perdido. What a wonderful experience. Plenty of activities to do both on the gorgeous property or outside. On the property we went zip lining, river tubing, on hikes, took yoga classes, bathed in the warm waters of a very scenic river and enjoyed their various thermal water pool. The food was fresh and delicious. The staff very friendly and highly accommodating. The cabin (our room) was spacious and comfortable, All made for a memorable stay.
