The centerpiece of the 600-acre private reserve is a unique THERMAL RIVER that runs for over a mile along the base of a rocky gorge. Visitors access the hot river by descending stone stairwells and trails. There are a couple of dozen untouched river pools to swim in. The ARCHITECTURALLY AWARDED restaurant has sweeping terraces that afford views of the canyons, volcanoes and the Miravalles dwarf forest. There is a full-service spa, a bar/lounge, and 3 hot mineral pools with floating sun decks and wet bar. There are 15 miles of hiking and biking trails. Breakfast, wireless internet and guest parking are complimentary. The staff can provide 24 hours concierge services, tour/ticket assistance and wedding services.

The place is very very pricey, I believe we paid over $500/ night. The rooms are nice , but very very dark. There isn’t enough light to see much at all in the room. Opening the blinds to the full wall picture window is nice, but it’s woods so not much light comes in. The bathrooms were very dark, I didn’t like them at all. There wasn’t very good water pressure in the sinks . The shower is outside , which is cool , but there were mosquitos for sure biting me in the shower. I had to spend about 30 minutes trying to clean a mess of hair out of the shower drain before I could even shower . There was hairs out on the ground in the whole shower area, I couldn’t see them until I put my led light on the ground then I could actually see how dirty the shower was. I had to fill a trash can up with water and keep pouring water down the drain until the hair finally went down(gross!!) the shower drains are very poorly placed as the water doesn’t go down the drains, it just sits on the surface of the tile in puddles. This is why there was so much hair on the shower floors , cause they don’t drain well. Also there is no way to wash them down even as the shower head is fixed and quite very close to the wall , so you have to shower right up against the wall, really weird being that the shower is like 10’x 10’! The pressure was good in the shower though. I like how the place uses lots of repurposed items , but I expect much much more for the price!! The sink drains don’t drain well either so hair and stuff kind of just sits there unless you really try to wash it down the one side where the drain is. The food was just so-so it really was nothing memorable and was more American type food , not much in the way of local food and ingredients. Outside the restaurant there are’nt any hot pools .. lots of pools but all cold, not one hot springs pool. The river is the hot springs, but it’d be nice to have at least one hot springs pool around the restaurant area! I did mountain biking and my guide was very very good. The advanced trail is pretty tough, lots of extreme uphill, I had to get off my bike quite a bit. Bikes were pretty nice the first day. The second day I was given a different bike and not even 20 minutes into my full day of biking the bike seat kept sliding all the way down. Each time it happened going uphill and I’d have to get off and walk.So I had to spend the whole entire day not really getting a good biking trip cause of the problem with the seat . I was so far out there I couldn’t turn around though. So upon my return I was offered and given a different bike but it was already pretty late so I didn’t go back out. The trails were very poorly marked , I got lost quite a bit of time out there and had to wait to get directions. There was no digital map of the trails either so I wasted a good hour to two trying to figure out where to go. I came for the bike trails, but I’d recommend anyone coming for the biking , stay somewhere else and come for the day pass for biking. $500 for this place was like 2.5 x’s overpriced . Rio Perdido is worth about $200 a night tops! The front desk was extremely nice , my mother was extremely sick and they did their best to make her feel better . I was there for two nights and my parents only stayed the first night and had to leave early for medical emergency. Rio Perdido didn’t offer me any discount for them not being there 67% of the time . I won’t be back unless the price comes way way down and even then I’d need more light and a cleaner shower especially for $500/day.

You need to stay here!! This was an absolute highlight for my family. The resort and setting is like no other. The thermal river was so beautiful and serene. The 3 times we hiked down, there was not a sole around. 117 degree fresh water flowing into a cool river and being able to sit in both temps at the same time was so awesome. The hotel staff were all so friendly, the food was excellent (the Tropical Ceviche is to die for), including at the poolside bar and the Canyon Adventure zip line tour was a blast. We loved our comfortable accommodations with the outdoor showers and the monkeys everywhere!! Thank you for such a fantastic stay, we will definitely be back!! 5 stars!

My husband and I just spent an amazing week and a half at Rio Perdido. It was perfect for relaxing days by the pool and spa, adventurous days zip-lining and hiking, and the WiFi was strong enough to get a few hours of work done online every day. Even video meetings were not a problem from the bungalow or the lobby/restaurant area. The on-site activities were fun and challenging. My husband especially enjoyed his mountain bike rides with Oscar. We rented a car so we’re able to take a few excursions recommended by the staff. There were so many staff members that gave us exceptional service, I don’t want to name them for fear of missing someone. We are planning a return with more of our family - we already miss our friends at Rio Perdido!

I wish I could give this place 10 stars. It was such a wonderful stay. I am neither an outdoorsy person or an adventure seeker, but this was just such a cool place. Our family of 5 came here for 4 nights for the first half of our vacation. It was relaxing the moment we stepped out of our airport transfer van. We had two bungalows. They were a nice size. Beds were super comfortable and the shower was really nice. It was just so peaceful they way they were surrounded by trees. The monkeys visited us there a few times and we saw them many times throughout the resort. They leave bottled water in the room every day when they clean. The best part was they programmed all of our keys the same for both rooms. I don't know why everywhere doesn't do this. It was so nice not to have to search which key worked which room! The food is very good. We enjoyed eating lunch at the pool café. Because there is just one place to eat the selections can get a little monotonous. But they do little things to mix it up like having a different bread every night at dinner. They also always had a dinner special and dessert special. But the food was truly made well and quality. The service was exceptional. They were friendly and always there for whatever you needed. I have stayed at the Ritz or JW Marriott and, although this was 1/2 the price, the service was similar or even better. Just so accommodating. I really was so impressed to find that level of service in the middle of a rainforest. We did the zipline course. Again, AMAZING! The 3 guys who ran it were so friendly and professional. They acted together so seamlessly that I didn't even have time to get scared (because I am a big baby). I will say that I don't think they are clear enough that this is not easy. Besides the ziplines there are many places during the course you need to climb and pull yourself up. They do tell you and we were fine, but I don't know if some people realize you better be ready to work! Pools were wonderful and thermal river was great. It had signs to lead you there but then they just kind of drop off and you are going down these rock stairs and there is nothing to say where you are. Please add signage. We weren't sure we had gone to the right place and couldn't find the mud to paint ourselves with until we googled it and saw pictures of what the trowels looked like. The same with the hiking trails. There are great trail maps and they are very well marked if you know where to look, but no one told us at first. We were just given a map with a bunch of colored lines on them. Finally someone at the desk told us to go over the suspension bridge and then we found the map and trail markings! Yoga was good. The schedule said it was at 7 and 8:45 everyday, but when we tried a couple of times for the later slot they weren't having it. Finally we go into one class and the instructor told us it would only be 45 minutes because he needed to eat breakfast. The 45 minutes was fine, but it was just a weird thing to say. The instructor was very knowledgeable and led a good class. They weren't able to offer the tubing during our stay as it was unsafe because of all the rain. As they expand it might be nice to add a game room with some things to do when it is too stormy to swim or hike. Overall I highly recommend that you stay here. It is super quiet, in the middle of nowhere with not much to do at night so 2-4 nights are probably best unless you are looking for endless solitude. Because it isn't really near anything it is hard to find tours anywhere. The hotel offered a few, but they were far drives and $200 or so a person. We just waited until the 2nd half of our stay at the beach area to do those things. It's not really a place for little kids or someone who isn't in somewhat healthy shape. Our 3 kids are teens and it was great. They do have golf carts to drive you around the property, but you really need to walk to experience the wildlife and nature and there are steps, dirt and rocky paths. I don't remember being this relaxed in a long time. We left there so happy. Going to the Pacific coast for the 2nd half of our stay felt so loud and crazy after 5 days here.

Greetings from Rio Perdido, your positive notes, along with those of other reviewers are very flattering and they definitely inspire us to keep improving the whole guest experience. This is a very detailed review with a lot of feedback and we are thankful for that. We are glad to know that you enjoyed our service, the quietness, the rooms, surroundings, and meals. We do offer specials every night to add more diversity to our menu. Regarding the Canyon Adventure, it´s definitely an experience for the adventure seeker and anyone in good health conditions can participate. We are sorry to hear that you got kind of lost on the way to the thermal river. It's basically a single trail down that gets you along the river. We recently improved our trail signage so that our guests won't need maps to wander around. We offer offsite activities and recommend those that won't imply you having to spend half of your day seating in a car. These activities are offered on a private basis and include transportation, an entrance fee, a guide, and most of them include a meal. We also make sure that our third-party providers comply with all the insurance and quality of service up to our standards or quality. We agree with you. we are not a place for little kids and this is the reason why we are an 8 yrs+ property. We feel that children 8 years of age and older, along with their parents and family, can better enjoy the unique Rio Perdido. Thank you for your time and we hope to be able to host you again in the future.

Our family of 6, my husband and our 4 daughters ages 21, 20, 17 and 13 spent 4 nights here in June. The ride up to this place is very deceiving but it sets you up for the beauty of the property. It is absolutely stunning. Very tropical, very isolated and all activities onsite. The open air breakfast/ dinner area is beautiful with amazing views. All terrain vehicles take you from place to place with just a call. If you want to walk to the areas ( like we did most of the time) it is great exercise and not difficult. The was a menu for breakfast not a full buffet ( which we would have preferred because if you wanted more you had to pay , otherwise breakfast was included. The food was very good with fresh juices everyday. We sat by the pool area bar often ad ordered drinks for happy hour was well as delicious food. The patacones were one of our favorites!! Our girls had the cutest private bungalows(like tree houses) very simple and deep in the environment. They heard and saw monkeys daily. My husband and I had a center bungalow which was huge with the whole front with big glass windows. The shower was literally outside!! The only thing we did not like was the room was very dark! The walls were painted black. and the lighting was miniscule and very dim. I struggled to see what I was doing when getting dressed for the evening. I would have preferred much better lighting. The sun is not always bright and with all the trees it really did not get in. The week before we came there wa a lot of rain so many onsite activities were closed down. This was very disappointing. Fianlyy the last 2 days we got to hike down to the thermal river and it was a great hike. We also hiked to volcano lookout and talmus point. Great hikes and exercise!! The white water rafting was close until we left but we did get to do the ziplining and boy was it worth it. The ziplining crew were very

Thank you very much debbiegutch for having taken the time to write and post your review. Not sure why you mention the ride-up as deceiving. We are located just one hour drive from Liberia. The route is well paved with the exception of the last 4 km where there were recently some works on the road but it is totally accessible by any kind of vehicle. We serve all our meals a la carte. We are glad you enjoyed our food and the bungalows. Center Bungalows are black with a floor-to-ceiling window in order to give protagonism to the nature surrounding the bungalows and also to optimize the circadian rhythm and provide a good night sleep.

This is probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. I don't think there is honestly one bad thing I could say about this place. From check in to check out we loved it. The road is a bit bad for the last few kilometers, but the rest is fine and its easy to find if you follow the signs. I heard that in the dry season of November to April, it can be a bit dry and brown around the hotel, but they irrigate around the hotel during that time so it stays green. We went in June and it was green everywhere, although a bit humid of course. The thermal river and hike were amazing, beware, there are little fish that like to nip at you and can scare you if you don't know they are there. Hiking is great, mountain biking was fun, but beware, the beginner trail is not really for beginners and I would actually rate it intermediate. The canyon adventure was awesome going over the rivers, and the guides were fun and like to tease you a little bit. There was lots or rain right before we arrived so the tubing was closed for us. Restaurant! We loved every meal. Some said they got tired of the menu, but there are specials every day. I really enjoyed the curry chicken special, it was honestly one of the best curries I have had. Room- we stayed in the dark one, and we loved it. It is Moody! dark and cold and we loved it in there. If you don't like the dark, go with the white room. My only complaint is I wish the dark rooms had a roof and hammock like the white rooms. It would have been nice to sit outside and enjoy the rain in a hammock. Staff was amazing, always helpful and always willing to help. I wish we would have stayed one more day instead of 3 days. If you are on the fence about booking this place, book it! you won't regret it! We will for sure be back one day.

We spent two nights at Rio Perdido in May, We had a wonderful time and I thought it was great value. There are tons of interesting activities to do which you don't get in any standard hotel - hot rivers, great hikes, ziplining, mountain biking etc. I absolutely loved the open air balcony with great views across the jungle - when the rain is hammering down outside it's great to sit there with a drink and just watch. The food was tasty and good value, but with a fairly limited menu it might get a little same-y if you're there for a week. We really liked the cocktails. We really liked the rooms with the outdoor showers (although they are a little gloomy).
