Get Lost in the Beauty of Rio Perdido
A naturally beautiful property nestled seamlessly in a tropical canyon, with a variety of activities to do for everyone, and a 5-star staff to enhance your experience. My husband I stayed here for 6 nights in July. For the entire time, we felt like we were having the quintessential Costa Rican experience but with modern comforts provided. We saw packs of monkeys everyday, as well as an armadillo, lots of iguanas, and agutis outside of our room. There was so much beautiful green fauna to look at everywhere you turned. The bungalows were nicely designed to give you privacy and views of the lush landscape on the property, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the A/C was a huge relief from the humidity. Definitely agree with the other reviews about managing expectations while staying in nature (bring bug repellent and wear shoes), but we slept comfortably every night. The food was incredible. The menu was large and the food was high restaurant quality. Since the resort is small, food came out super quickly. The plating was gorgeous for every meal! Drinks were also delicious and they can do anything - take advantage of the fresh fruit juices. We loved all of the activities. Everything was super convenient since it was just a short walk from our bungalow, and the guides make you feel safe and are incredibly knowledgeable and easy to talk to. The spa is small, but I personally thought it was one of the best massages I’ve had in awhile. The three pools allowed for lots of swimming and lounging space. The swim up bar was never busy and the bartenders were happy to make you whatever drink you felt like having! The property is 1,500 acres, but feels intimate. A big reason for that is the amazing staff, who we got to know pretty well. The bar and waitstaff excelled in making us feel hospitable and were genuinely excited to see us for each meal and day. The front desk and gift shop staff were friendly and were able to answer any questions or concerns we had. As a total compliment to Rio Perdido, we fell in love with this beautiful country because of this resort, and can’t wait to explore more of it. And now, we know that we have one place along the way that we will be excited to stop and stay at whenever we return.
Wow. First of all, thank you for choosing Rio Perdido as your first place to visit in Costa Rica, and thank you for choosing our beautiful country as your vacation destination. We loved your review since we feel it reflects what we desire to achieve with every single guest that visits us. We are proud and thankful that we were able to meet your expectations and our goals providing an unforgettable experience. We hope this will be the first of many visits to Costa Rica and look forward to hosting you again.

Perfect Place to Unwind and enjoy Costa Rica’s Beautiful Nature
Staying in RP is an experience that will make you feel immersed in the wilderness, but with all the comfort and the most friendly and accommodating staff that will get you as relaxed as it gets. We stayed 3 nights in one of the Center Bungalows and we loved it. The architecture and details of the room are amazing; the dark interior drives your attention to the nature out of the door-to-ceiling windows. The outdoor showers will make you feel like you are in a waterfall. Sit down on the terrace and you are in for a treat, you’ll get to see a very diverse fauna. We had an Agouti (google it) visiting us every day. The thermal river is amazing, I was expecting a strong sulfur smell but I could barely notice it. They have volcanic mud for you to spread it on your body, but this one did have a strong odor which is not for me so I decided to skip it. We went white water tubbing, ziplining and hiking and I’d strongly recommend you do it as well (specially the zip line). The staff will make sure you have a fun time and feel save all the time. We tried the massages at the spa and I guarantee you that if you do it and then jump in one of the thermal pools you will forget all your problems. The hotel is very secluded and apart from civilization, so if you need anything in particular with you, I recommend you bring it in advance, the closest town is at a 20 min drive. Plus, once you are in the hotel you will not want to leave. I also recommend you to fly into Liberia airport which is 1hr away from the hotel. Cellphone reception is not good here, but they have a very good wifi service. The only downside of this place is that it will make you question the place you are living.
Hello andresm808, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Rio Perdido. We are very glad to see that we are accomplishing our goal of offering a relaxed, friendly, and comfortable way to enjoy a unique destination that allows enjoying nature, wellness, adventure, and amazing views. We hope you are able to return and maybe even consider moving from the place you live. Thank you!!

Luxurious without feeling pretentious - a relaxing get away...
Recently stayed at Rio Perdido for 3 nights as our first stop in Costa Rica. Had a wonderful and relaxing start to our vacation! It is easier to reach than anticipated from the airport and upon arrival and parking, you are greeted by one of the staff ready to take you via golf buggy to reception. The location is beautiful and it feels like you are tucked away in the treetops. The communal areas amongst the hotel are amazing; open air and feels very complementary to the natural surroundings. Luxurious without feeling pretentious. We stayed in an east bungalow and was very impressed with the modern decor, space and cleanliness. Your own terrace with hammocks are lovely to relax in. The rooms have beautiful views and you really feel like you a tucked away in a retreat. The food is very good - the appetisers and main courses are presented beautifully and taste delicious. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food served. Cocktails are great! The pool areas are beautiful and it is lovely to watch the wildlife (monkeys, lizards etc) around you as you sunbathe. We explored the thermal river and had a volcanic mud bath which was great fun. We didn’t try the other paid activities but heard they were good. We did the free yoga and organised walks which happen every morning - the yoga is on a beautiful open air platform and the walk takes you up to the helipad (we saw tarantula’s, termites and lizards!) If you’re after a complete get away, then this is your place. It is slow paced and chilled out. If I were to offer constructive feedback, I’d say that the hotel could offer ear plugs for the guests (or bring your own) as the wildlife can get very noisy as dawn breaks. The sounds are amazing but you may want to lie in one day with peace and quiet. Also, service is very polite and friendly but on occasion we had to remind the staff about a couple of items we had requested. This did not impact our stay but recognise that service is more chilled out and relaxed than you may be used to. Huge recognition goes out to Carlos who looked after us from the moment we checked in to the moment we left - he was brilliant! Also, Marial (I think that’s her name?) who worked in the restaurant was super friendly and attentive. Thank you to both for making our stay so enjoyable!
Hello Natalie, We've enjoyed reading your review, which nicely illustrates your stay exprience. Yes, Rio Perdido is a great place to disconnect, while actually connecting with the pristine setting and doing as many activities as you may desire. As mentioned, most of said activities are not subject to additional fees; these include some of the guided hikes, the best thermal soaking in the region, morning yoga on the cliff-side pods, volcanic mud body painting (with the real stuff), access to the mineral pools, etc. The signature activities, like the White Water Tubing, the Canyon Adventure, and TWA's mountain biking are subject to extra fees that generally start at $40pp. And indeed, they are fantastic... very different from activities that are available all over the country. We wish you a great week. PURA VIDA**

I'm from Colombia and live in Boston, i wanted to take my family to Costa Rica, I travel there 25 years ago. This time i wanted to really encounter deep nature, Rio perdido not only exceed our expectations, The CUISINE....mamamia is out of this world. They only buy food from the farmers that live in the area where this paradise is located. I can not describe the kindness from all the personal at the Hotel. Thank you Juan for help us with all my daughters food extravaganza. Now talking about activities, make sure you have the right clothing and be ready for the action. We did every activity that Rio Perdido offer, tubbing, Yoga, the hiking, mountain Bikes, the most eclectic zip lines, thank you Juan Diego, Oscar, Kevin and our photographer. Rooms are in the middle of Monkeys habitat, we see them every morning while we had coffee in our chair "amacas". We have a private transportation, we got there in 1 hours and we enjoy the trip very much!! If you asl me what i enjoy the most, i would said the termal waters form the River inside the Hotel, we just walk down few steps an we were in the most relax and enchanted place on earth.

This place is magical! We would recommend Rio Perdido to anyone looking to feel tucked away in beautiful, secluded nature while also getting amazing service from the staff. Everyone was extremely kind and eager to be helpful! There was so much to do on the property, we didn’t ever leave during our 4 night stay. The thermal pools were amazing! We spent some time each day at the pools and usually had lunch at the pool bar. The food was so good! We didn’t have anything we didn’t like! We walked down to the thermal rivers multiple times as well! So secluded and relaxing and beautiful! My husband and I went on multiple of the hiking trails on the property. Las Tumbas Hike will give you an amazing view as a reward for the hour long intermediate+ hike! We did see a few families, but definitely seems the perfect place for couples. We actually spent the last few days in Peninsula Papagayo at another resort, and we wished we had just stayed at Rio Perdido! A piece of our heart is definitely there!

2 people - stayed for 4 nights in late August 2023. Pre-arrival email and communication were excellent. Check in easy and quick with a yummy welcome drink. All of the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. We felt that 3-4 nights is the right amount of time. The river was lovely. The stairs to get down to the river could be difficult in spots so you have to be highly mobile to get there, but once you do - it’s totally worth it. Their pools have the hot water pumped in so if you need something easier to access those are available too. But if you are able, I recommend go to the hottest part of the river where the cold and hot water meet. It’s a very cool experience. There are two ways to get there - a staircase from the main road, or a path along the river from the lobby area. The hikes around the resort are great too and we saw a ton of animals throughout our stay. We had the larger bungalow which comes with an outdoor shower. The shower was really nice to use and felt private. The AC in the room worked great. Bed was comfortable. Shower water got hot and was good pressure. The rooms are painted black which is neat at first and wonderful at night, but found it difficult to feel open and bright when the sun was out - even with floor to ceiling windows. The smaller bungalows had hammocks in their patios where we only had a couple of chairs, however they didn’t seem to have outdoor shower. There is construction happening now for more bungalows being added but the noise and activity never bothered us at all. The food was excellent - higher quality and they did have different options each day. We drank their tap water - it was delicious. Really enjoyed our time there and would recommend.

Amazing, remote hotel - very special location with mineral springs and plush rainforest. Excellent food and cocktails. Great and accessible excursions. Highly recommend the Canyon Adventure and the off premise white water rafting (tubing was cancelled due to weather when we were supposed to do it so unfortunately can’t speak to that). We were two families traveling together with 4 children ages 9-12. The staff made the entire experience for our kids - they were attentive, fun and so warm. They made special drinks and always greeted us with warm smiles and conversation. Special shout out to Ronald and Carlos who were truly exceptional! We stayed 4 nights which felt a little too long for us - I’d probably recommend 2-3 nights for most families. But we also had 2+ days of heavy rain so wildlife was limited and tubing was cancelled. Overall very special experience and so glad we had it. Thank you Monica, Ronald, Carlos and the entire staff there. You made the difference.

Hello, Saliks! We are thrilled that you had a great experience and that you recognize and appreciate our amazing team-members. They very much appreciate being remembered... and named! Thank you. I felt compelled to share something with you: At its very beginning, about a decade ago, Rio Perdido quickly became known as an outdoor adventure destination. However, over time, many of our guests helped us shape our true raison d'etre, which is centered on a comprehensive wellness experience. So, while our Canyon Adventure and White Water Tubing are loved by so many (and will continue to be among the signature activities offered), the majority of our guests come to Rio Perdido to soak in the 100% natural warm river pools, within our thermal canyon... they come to explore our extensive network of trails that can take you to "casa vieja", the carbonated (medicinal) spring, several amazing lookouts, cascades, and fauna-spotting. Guests rent mountain bikes and flow over CR's best singletrack... they have private dinners under the stars... and some folks venture out of the property, on exciting excursions that we recommend... for longer stays. You see, we have guests that stay 2, 3, and even 4 weeks! It is true; the majority of these guests are couples. Some are families with teenagers. Perhaps the most flattering thing is that so many of our extended stay individuals speak of a "life-changing" experience. That is the magic of this unique spot... and that opportunity to brighten people's days / lives is what energizes us at the start of each day. Precisely because of the type of experience that has been gradually and organically formed as a reaction to visitor feedback (as well as our own consciousness), we made the decision to raise the minimum age from 8 to 12 years of age. So, starting in November of this year, Rio Perdido will be a 12+ property. We will continue to allow shorter stays, but will recommend at least 4 nights. Please know that these are not "business decisions", at all. This project has been a labour of love for us -- we want to make sure that every person that arrives at Rio Perdido truly has the opportunity to experience a stay with a lasting effect. Again, we thank you for having taken the time to share your words and thoughts! Warm regards from Guanacaste-- !!

From the time you walk down the gorgeous wooden entry pathway into the open and inviting reception / dining building, you can feel that this place is special. The resort itself is amazing, but what makes it truly exceptional is the staff. Without exception, they are kind, engaged and welcoming. Most addressed us by name when they saw us throughout our visit. The facilities are very nice. Three heated pools, a poolside bar with the nicest staff you can imagine, beautiful open dining area ( with great food). Since the resort is isolated, I was concerned that the food prices would be outrageous- they weren’t. Most menu items were between $10 to 25 USD. Very reasonable. Add in the complementary breakfast and dining is not a cost driver. The rooms (we had a center bungalow) were minimalist- but in a good way. And very clean. The outdoor shower was a surprise, but we found we liked it ( it is totally enclosed except the roof). The thermal river was quite unique and never felt crowded. I read the reviews about the roads being bad - they’re really not that bad. Some potholes, yes, but I’d be comfortable driving here in a sedan (no 4x4 needed). All around, a place you can relax and enjoy yourself.

Hi there, "many travels 500"! These are very flattering words... and moreover, from a contributor with that many helpful votes. We love that you address VALUE. Following the pandemic, so many hotels in the area (and around the world) raised rates and service prices... in many cases, to obscene levels. Colleagues recommended to us that we do the same. But we did not. Rio Perdido is a very special project for us and we hope to never welch on the concept of value. I'll share with you something that should be confidential... but, here goes: despite our comparatively high occupancy levels, Rio Perdido became profitable until very recently. We have ALWAYS chosen preserving high quality and value over improving our margins. As a final comment, I will take the opportunity to clarify that our pools are not "heated". Rather, they are naturally hot, as RP has a couple of very generous thermal wells, in a addition to having this amazing thermal river and its many natural hot springs, that emanate before your very eyes. This place is blessed with a surprising amount of nature's beautiful bounty. We wish you a great weekend. Regards, Gabriel

Wonderful, secluded beautiful hotel. We stayed at both smaller and the larger bungalows, both are great, beautiful design and surroundings. We had monkeys visit our balcony few times. The thermal river is awesome, with the highest temp. being around 45c just as it comes out of the ground. What makes this place stand out, is the staff: friendly, eager to help and kind. Alex and Ronald made exceptional cocktails. You’d be pleasantly surprised that all smoothies/ cocktails are made from fresh fruit!!! Breakfast was included, but since they bring fresh fruits and pastries before you order, we found that we were full, so opted to get some sides. You have to do the activities! They are all worth it, we did tubing, zip line and night walk. Monica went out of her way to help me out with a booking mistake I made, which I am grateful for. One thing: if you are staying more than three days and want to visit other places, rent a car from the airport, the hotel does have private transport, but having a car would have been great. the staff wore funny little white hats, if I was one of the staff, I probably would like wearing it.

Greetings from Rio Perdido, and thank you for taking the time to write a review. We were wearing funny little white hats since we were celebrating a Costa Rican holiday, :) We are also wearing them this month to celebrate our Independence. It's nice to see that you were able to experience the both room categories that we offer. Both are very different as you could see and both have a special charm. East bungalows are very popular due to the hammocks and the feeling that you are staying in a tree house, and the Center Bungalows fr the special and unique design with the floor to ceiling window and the black color to give protagonism to the green vegetation outside. We are glad that you enjoyed both,

A stay at Rio Perdido is a must. The grounds and buildings are beautiful. We enjoyed watching monkeys as we relaxed at our cabin. The food is delicious. I am gluten free and menu had many gluten free options. The thermal river is something special. The scenery is lovely and soaking in the thermal waters is relaxing. Our group of older teens and adults all had fun taking a guided night walk and zip line, joined the canyon adventure and the white water rafting. The adults also attended the morning yoga class or the guided walk and a hike. The activities themselves are excellent but the staff are outstanding. They make each activity especially fun.

We stayed 4 nights in a central bungalow (Fri - Mon) and found every aspect of the resort to be as advertised. Duration: 3-4 nights was ideal for our activity mix, since you are on property the entire time and far removed from anything local or nearby. This gave us plenty of downtime with 1-2 active options each day. Lodging: The bungalow was exceptional, well-designed, and kept in great condition every day. The outdoor showers were a delight. Staff: Great attention to detail and hospitality—including to-go breakfast and help with our luggage and car for a 4am departure. Everyone was helpful, warm, and more than willing to guide us through decisions and plans each day. Activities: • Morning yoga on the cliffside deck is extraordinary. • Tubing down the (Class II) Rio Perdido rapids is surprisingly fun (we enjoyed it as much as larger rafting on Class III and IV rapids). • The mild hike to Tumbas is rewarding for the view to surrounding volcanoes • The thermal pools are worth exploring and truly lead you into a secluded river canyon • The spa was simple and enjoyable for massages Food and Drink: Open-air dining at both the lodge and the pool bar with menu options that did not disappoint. Great ingredient mixes and variety. Bring your kids? The resort is tranquil and low on programming, so it feels more like an adult property than a family destination. We noticed several families though, and we did think that our teenage kids would have enjoyed the experience as well. The resort pools are just below the open-air spa, so it is designed to be a bit quieter than some families may prefer. My opinion is that older kids able to enjoy nature, hiking, leisure pool time, and a few thrills (ziplining, tubing) will love it.
