We travelled to Costa Rica in March of 2021, just as the covid restrictions were lifting and travel was beginning again. We decided to see Costa Rica in a different way, without constant travel. We stayed 9 full days at Rancho Naturalista. We worried that might be too much, but it was the right decision :) For those who are new to Costa Rica, start with the knowledge that Costa Rica is NOT a cheap country. Most first time visitors are surprised that the prices are very much like prices in the states. Rancho Naturalista follows that pattern. But that being said, the stay there was beyond wonderful. The lodge is warm and welcoming with rooms in both the main building and in the few casitas spread around the property. The lodge sits in a large piece of forest (which I called jungle). It is crisscrossed with trails and in one to two minutes of walking you are in another world. The lodge boasts a famous wildlife balcony where there is a never ending parade of birdlife and other animals. We love Hummingbirds. Trust us, you will get your fill of these magic birds without even leaving the balcony. All photos posted here are from the actual hotel grounds. Amazing. The food was great. The chef could easily be working in a big hotel restaurant but chooses to work in this small lodge. Each meal was a wonderful surprise. In a long 9 day stay, the evening meal never repeated. Breakfast was traditional and sumptuous. Lunch was always a new surprise. Because of Covid, the usual staff was reduced, and at times we had the run of the place. The servers and all around concierge guys were so much fun. Both named Carlos, we nicknamed them Emperor Carlos I and II. A young couple live on site and are formal birding guides. Harry and Mercedes amazed us with their keen eye and great explanations. We took several "light" field trips with them. Although they can take huge trips deep into the forests, they also accommodated our requests for easier trips. We would go out for half days and come back filled with great sightings and scenes. Our main host was Nikki who is part of the family that has owned Rancho Naturalista since the beginning long ago. She was as helpful as you could ever hope. She even arranged an emergency piece of dental work for me in the nearby town. It turned out very well. Though hopefully the Covid issue will be gone by the time you travel, please know that Rancho Naturalista did it right. Their precautions were all up to date and they were very conscientious. Yes, we recommend this place without hesitation or reservation. Plan in advance and get those reservations in order.

My husband and I decided to travel to Costa Rica for our 25th anniversary. We started our trip at Rancho Naturalista because I'm a birder and I loved it! The bird guides, Harry and Mercedes, were both friendly, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. There are many options for half-day and full-day bird tours. The upper deck of the lodge had amazing views of the surrounding valleys and volcanos, and a beautiful garden with bird feeding stations and an astounding number of hummingbirds which allowed for close views and excellent photography opportunities. The meals were served on the lower outdoor covered patio, and were delicious. The property has numerous paths and on one of our walks, we went to a built-in platform that overlooked a small stream at dusk. With a little patience, we then watched as multiple gorgeous hummingbirds came to the stream to bathe! It was a fantastic experience in nature! Very relaxing lodge for the nature lover. A special touch was they brought us a bottle of wine of our choice for our anniversary. Lastly, Nikki, the manager, was very helpful with communication before and after our trip--the airline had lost a piece of our luggage and Nikki helped us track it down and it eventually was returned to us! She also helped arrange transport from the airport to Rancho which was very helpful. Of note, this area is a tropical jungle with lots of rain, so be sure and pack rain gear. I hope to return some day!

Food was some of the best I've ever eaten anywhere. Staff was extraordinarily friendly, accomodating, covid-conscious (safe), and knowledgeable about where to go within and beyond Rancho to see our target birds. Wish I had time for a yoga class. Birds were truly incredible. Great sheltered birding from the upper deck of the lodge during the rain and extensive trails to hike in fair weather. Rooms were very nice, clean, spacious. Even if I hated birds I would love this place.

I absolutely loved my trip to Rancho Naturalista. Within two days of staying there, I saw around 70 species of birds. The trails are well maintained, the rooms are absolutely beautiful, and the birds are amazing. Harry and Mercedez were really understanding and absolutely excellent birders who made my trip even better. Have to say I was not expecting to get the number of birds that I did there. Thank you so much. Hope I can return.
