We stayed 3 nights and I found the ceiling fan and an open balcony door (closed screen door) made the temperature just right (and I overhear very easily). We didn’t have any problems with insects in the room. We weren’t in one of the two suites - as an aside, you have a 50:50 chance, overlooking the front gardens to a horse paddock beyond and the hills, or the car park side, which other people have mentioned - but our room was a decent size. The fittings do look somewhat dated, and there are small details like the drying line above the bath not having any string in it (we’re probably not the first people to unscrew it entirely, almost losing the end down the plug hole), but for me, as long as everything I need is functional (and it was), little quirks give a place character. The staff are very friendly, and Janna (sp.) is an enthusiastic manager. The food we had was all decent fayre, but it won’t blow you away. The path(s) around the property have a couple of really beautiful viewpoints, but I think there was supposed to be a waterfall, but several paths were blocked (by plastic tape) and we decided to behave. Not sure what that was about. We also ended up on the wrong side of the farm, following pink strips of ribbon that are tied intermittently along a path, ending up at a barbed wire fence. A very nice man cheerfully pointed us back the other way, but maybe the hotel could work on its signposting a bit :). The pool was nice for cooling down in after a day in the sun, but there are a few angular edges that caught me out - nothing sharp, but just worth looking out for. Oh yes, and I really like the sounds of nature surrounding the hotel, so *please* turn off the endless saxophone music.

The accommodation is very comfortable however, on our arrival, we were shown to our beautiful suite and I must stress, we could not fault the room however, it was very disappointing when we went out on to our lovely balcony to find we were right above the delivery area for the kitchens, and extremely noisy, droning machinery equipment room below us and we overlooked the car park and litter bins. The droning of the machinery reverberated through our room and as we were staying three nights, we did not feel we could put up with it especially as we did not want to sit out on the balcony amidst the delivery vehicles and visitors cars coming and going. We expressed our disappointment to the young lady on reception who was most helpful and accommodating and was able to move us to a far more pleasing room overlooking the front gardens. The only other criticism is the breakfast, for all it was tasty, it really is not good value considering the overall price for 'bed and breakfast'. Our first morning, having been up and out early bird watching for 4 hours, by the time we got back for breakfast, we were very hungry so only being able to order one chosen thing from the menu, we ordered a cooked breakfast but also ordered the granola and fruit which was 'extra'! I feel in this class of hotel, this is somewhat miserly. And be warned, the bowl of granola was very small so if you should choose this as your breakfast 'allowance', you will be hungry half an hour after you have left the table!

This hotel is in desperate need of upkeep. As an example, the once white bathroom door had not been cleaned in so long that the brass handle was sticky to the touch and the once white near the door handle was dirty brown from years of touching without cleaning or repainting. The furniture has not been recovered in decades, and the dark patterns no longer hide the wear and dirt. The only things that are new are the clean white sheets, the pillows, the high quality toilet paper, and the light fixtures over the bed, which although awkwardly placed allowed for easy reading. I was very thankful for these few features as they allowed us a decent night sleep and the opportunity to read given that viewing anything online was impossible due to the very weak internet. Other highlights include a pool table that allowed us hours of family fun and better than average albeit expensive food at dinner time. In contrast, the included breakfasts were very weak even though extensive (eg typical breakfast of eggs, rice, plantains, etc or pancakes or American breakfast of eggs, toast, bacon and hash browns). Most frustrating had to be the constant replaying of the same three acoustic songs. They started the music at 6 am and played it constantly through the day and evening so that you could not hear the birds or bugs. Prices were in US dollars and were too hope given the dilapidated state of the hotel. As other reviewers said, the rooms are very musty, and there are tons of mosquitos.

I was there a week ago, just for one night, as a stop from Cartago to Puerto Viejo, we just wanted a place to sleep, and we found this lovely and romantic big house. I wish there was a better way to describe it, it was way more than we expected. Big grounds to walk (a lot of insects by the way), the house has a lovely pool, it only has 12 bedrooms, but they are big and beautiful. Really good breakfast included. I was with my boyfriend, so we had a really good dinner at night, and the we went on to play some pool and foosball. It´s nice and quiet, great for a romantic getaway. The best attention from the waiter, I believe his name was Rafael.
