Tree Houses Hotel is a bed and breakfast hotel conveniently located off the main road that runs through La Fortuna and around the Arenal Volcano. We are a short 25 minute drive to the high tourist area. People seek us out with that in mind, to be away from it all but close enough to enjoy all the fun adventure the La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano area has to offer. We have just 7 tree houses (each very private) on 10 acres and we are surrounded by a 70 acre wildlife refuge with a waterfall, pools to swim and a beautiful river. Each tree house features A/C, warm water showers, refrigerators and safes. There are few hotels like this in the world and none other in Costa Rica. There is something so very exciting about spending the night high in the forest canopy, wildlife all around you, safe and cozy in a tree house hotel in Costa Rica.

We stayed at the Tree Houses Hotel the first week in March 2020 and absolutely loved it. It was our home base for our time in the La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area. Rae and her entire staff were amazing, from helping us to book some truly incredible experiences, to delicious breakfasts every morning, to pointing out sloths, monkeys, hummingbirds, and agouti on the property. We stayed in the Sloth House and my pre-teen daughters loved the loft space. The wraparound porch looking out into the rainforest was my favorite. We saw so many birds right from our deck, listened to the cicadas buzzing, and on our last morning, were awakened by a toucan knocking on the window! Each morning, we found thermoses of coffee, milk, and juice on the porch table so that we could caffeinate privately before we started our day. We then walked over to the breakfast space where we were treated to delicious hot breakfasts with Costa Rican flair. One morning, one of the staff called to us on the porch to come see a sloth climbing up in a nearby tree... so amazing. There is a bird/animal feeding station off to either side of the dining area and we saw oodles of hummingbirds, lots of tanagers, and a faithful agouti each morning. There is a river/swimming hole on the property, and if you ask for river towels at the reception house, the resident Tree Houses dogs might accompany you on your hike, which thrilled my daughters, who were missing their own dogs. The river is so pretty, cool, refreshing, and on our second hike, we heard and saw two howler monkeys calling to each other in the trees. The night hike was another huge perk. The guide showed us snakes, frogs, scorpions, lots of sleeping birds. The guide gave us so much information and it's definitely worth taking a hike as often as you can, because we saw lots of different animals on the two hikes that we took. The convenience of having our excursions booked through the Tree Houses with their vetted partners cannot be overstated. We ziplined twice with two different companies, both really amazing experiences, one going past La Fortuna Falls, and the other through the cloud forest and including a Superman experience. We rafted with Wave Expeditions, which was one of the best experiences we had on the trip. We had a guide (Juan Carlos) take us on a full-one-day-experience to the Mistico Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Falls, the Arenal Volcano, and the Paradise Hot Springs with stops for lunch and dinner. We volunteered for a morning at an animal sanctuary, Proyecto Asis. All of our experiences were absolutely perfect. We had a full and exhausting week, and it was so nice to have locally vetted outfitters so that we didn't have to worry about trying to read through the advertising to see whether the experience would be a good fit. Rae and her entire staff were always friendly and helpful and made our trip so much better. I can't imagine recommending another property with more enthusiasm... it was just a perfect stay!

We recently stayed here for more than a week and loved our stay. Everyone who works here was very friendly. It was wonderful to be able to sit on our deck and watch the birds and monkeys. We loved our 2 leather Costa Rican rocking chairs. The sturdy wooden table and bench seats on the deck were perfect for our picnics at lunch time. The treehouse had basic kitchen supplies like plates, glasses, mugs and cutlery which we used for our picnics. There was also a small fridge so we were able to stock some simple items like cheese and yogurt. At the large supermarket nearby, we were able to buy fresh bread, tomatoes, bananas and avocadoes every day. Because of the heat and humidity, we were grateful to have the air-conditioner. There were numerous small restaurants nearby that we really liked, particularly Happy Land and the Soda Santa Clara. Since there was no Wifi at the Treehouses (not even at Reception), it was important for us to get Wifi once a day at the various restaurants. It was handy to have a rental car to get around although the driving, particularly at night, was harrowing. Breakfasts at the Rancho were large and varied with fruit, juices, coffee & tea available. Either Rae or Stacey came to breakfast every day to talk to each family about their previous day and check on their plans for the current day. We went to the Rancho nearly every day to get tea and coffee. A kettle, cups, sugar, and a thermos of coffee were always available. There was a microwave to heat the coffee which was usually lukewarm. We also found a box of games and playing cards at the Rancho. We were surprised to find that there was no hot water at our bathroom sink, only in the shower but we were able to adapt quite easily. The treehouse lacked any cupboard space or place to hang things up so we ended up placing our suitcases on the empty beds and spreading out. We sent a laundry out twice and it was returned very quickly. We were able to borrow a hairdryer from Reception. We really enjoyed our walks on the grounds, particularly down to the river. We appreciated the benches along the way to rest and just enjoy the surroundings. We did the night walks twice and saw quite a variety of creatures. We also had a great time on some of the other tours recommended by Rae. The chocolate tour at Two Little Monkeys was fabulous as well as our morning of volunteering at Proyecto Asis. Do not miss these tours if you have the time. Rae suggested Paradise Hot Springs and we had a wonderful day there with no crowds. We did 2 hikes with Juan Carlos. The Rio Celeste was great although the trail was a little steeper and slipperier that we were expecting. There were no places to sit on the 3 hour hike! We also did the Juan Carlos Blanco hike on a very rainy day. Although we completed most of the 3-hr hike, it was really beyond our capabilities and very wet! We are still missing our morning coffee & tea on the deck before breakfast as well as our visits from the birds and monkey.s. Thank you for a wonderfully unique experience that we will long remember!

THIS IS A MUST STAY!! The rooms are so unique, clean and comfortable. The owner Rae and her staff went above and beyond making us feel right at home. The coffee delivered to your porch along with the food for the birds made waking up every morning a memorable experience. The home cooked breakfast was fresh and delicious. DO NOT miss out on the night walk with your the hotel guide, he's so much fun, knowledgeable and his English is good. There is also a well marked walking path down to a set of falls and river, I was solo and felt safe every step of the way. Rae and her rescue pups are the top of my list for our amazing adventure in Costa Rica.

The tree house hotel is a unique property. Our family of 4 stayed in the sloth tree house. The boys loved having their own loft up in the tree house to sleep in - such a cool feature. My husband and I loved the morning coffee delivery to our porch. The tree house was quaint, clean and had air conditioning. Breakfast was included and is very traditional. It would have been better if we had been told the breakfast before it was served. That way we could opt out of options we didn’t care to eat so food waste could be avoided. Our first night, we took the guided night hike. It started with a safety discussion including the mention that the most venomous snake in Costa Rica has been found on the property. After getting the scary safety stuff covered, we were given flashlights and led on an hour an a half tour of the grounds by an experienced and knowledgeable guide. We saw an active sloth, lizards, scorpions, a red eye frog and many bugs. Thankfully no snakes were spotted!

Response from Tree Houses Hotel Costa Rica Raeann MacInnes, Owner at Tree Houses Hotel Costa Rica

Thank you! We are so glad you had a great experience. Luckily snakes don't want to run in to us any more than we want to run in to them. Our staff has great eyes and if a venomous snake is found it is moved far away from Tree Houses. Plus, we keep our paths clean and they are very wide. I hope you will come visit again soon. Pura Vida

We had very little time in Arenal but Rae helped us make every second count. When we arrived after a long drive from Osa, she put us in a room with parking to save our carrying luggage a long distance. Thank you Rae. The room was beautiful, the bed was comfortable, everything was spotless. Rae helped us plan and schedule a great day and since we had to be out early the staff brought over delicious coffee and prepacked breakfasts. So wonderful. The second day we were able to eat the hotel breakfast and it was delicious and with the hearty breakfast and extra coffee the staff brought over because they knew I liked an early coffee, I had everything I needed to fortify me for the arduous. drive to Monteverde. Just wish we had had time for the free night walk tour on the property and the hike to the waterfall/river. We will look forward to that next time. This was by far the most expensive room we booked on our trip but it was well worth it.
