The Pura Vida Hotel is located 4km north of the SJO International airport - we provide a free taxi pickup for international arrivals. Breakfast is included and an excellent dinner is available with reservations (or late meals for late arrivals). Touring services include car rentals delivered here, private vans and as much touring advice as you wish - we are experts on Costa Rica. We have arrangements with Alamo Car Rental for deals on car rentals. Our idea is simply that this is a place we would like to stay at when we travel.

We were looking for a small upscale hotel to collect ourselves after our flights to CR and to relax the night before leaving for home. Owner Berni was very helpful in our preps and the hotel delivered. He was unfortunately away when he visited but his associates looked after all our needs. It is an oasis of calm with extensive gardens, and the Rain Forest Casita was perfect for the 2 of us. Breakfast was excellent. It is convenient to the airport but perhaps not as close as others have suggested and it is not prominently signed. We had our own car and the hotel has private secure parking. With Berni gone there were no inhouse dinners, and we needed the car to get to restaurants. All in all......a great hotel and very good value.

Property's Favorite Review
Honestly, I was just looking for a place somewhat near the airport but something that wasn't a chain hotel and still gave us some more Costa Rica vibes on our last night. We stumbled upon Pura Vida Hotel and went for it. Since my wife and I were celebrating our 15 year anniversary, I went ahead and booked dinner at the property as well. Boy were we impressed all around! We were greeted by the owners' two amazing German Shepherds who hung with us the rest of the night and the next morning. Both Berni and Nhi greeted us warmly and showed us to our Rainforest Casita. We loved the room and the open air. In the room, there is perhaps the largest welcome book you will ever find. I urge you to read every page. Berni's writing style is like no other. My wife read the entire thing and then proceeded to read it back to me from memory over dinner and I could not stop laughing. There are so many touches like this throughout the gorgeous property. The plants and trees alone are absolutely amazing. If you are lucky, you will have a gorgeous view of Poas Volcano the morning you wake up like we did. It was even erupting steam just for us! However, let's get to the most important part. First off, we visited for one night in the off season and timed it perfectly between two group visits so we literally had the entire boutique resort to ourselves! Since we are huge dog people, Berni let the dogs hang with us when we were outside of our room. Since Berni and Nhi are warm and welcoming, it literally felt like we were staying at a friend's very fancy house. But wait, there's more. We booked the dinner knowing absolutely nothing going into it. H--o---l---y cow! Nhi is an absolute magician in the kitchen. Every single plate that was put in front of us was pure heaven. From the presentation to fresh ingredients to over-the-top flavor, we could not believe how great this meal was. She is an incredible chef! On top of that, the price was incredibly reasonable and far cheaper than grabbing an app, steak, and dessert through crummy room service at a Hilton! You owe it to yourself to book the dinner when you stay here. You absolutely won't regret it. Don't even get me started on the breakfast the next morning which is included in your rate. Just wow!!! So fresh and so delicious! I can't thank Berni and Nhi enough for a wonderful stay and wonderful food. Berni, thanks for the added stories and jokes throughout our stay as well!

Thank you Michael for the spiffing review! BTW I did not "let Bandito & Ziva hang with you" . . . they generally make their OWN call on who they really like :-)) It was a real pleasure to meet with you both and be a tiny part of your 15 great years together - there will be many more. Berni

Just a short ride from the airport, following the comical emailed instructions from Berni, the owner. A gorgeous, secluded small retreat with beautiful grounds and lots of flowers. The orchids are a special treat. I can't say enough about the food, there are no words for the fresh and creative meals prepared by Nhi. Be sure to reserve ahead. I've never, ever had such an amazing breakfast with fresh tropical fruit, yogurt, and a fresh baked sweet with local coffee. I can't imagine staying anywhere else near San Jose.

Enjoy this eco-friendly hotel as you settle in to the Costa Rica paradise. We typically head out to stay and explore the beautiful areas in Costa Rica but found this little treasure to be a great entry/exit point. I would imagine if you are exploring San Jose you could easily make this home base. We missed the afternoon visit to the market where fresh foods are selected for the evening meals. But no worries, the experience was not had but we were able to take advantage of the expertly prepared dishes that were served in the open air dining area. Really surprised at the quality and presentation of the food. DO NOT dine out. The breakfast was equally as good, starting with an assortment of locally sourced fruits, all of which were delicious and must be tried. But pace yourself as portions are quite large. The chef, her spouse and the entire staff were talented, happy and eager to please. Berni rounds it all out with his measured dish descriptions, antidotes, local (and not so local) history and humor. The rooms were very comfortable and clean and the pups were there to say hello, play and keep an eye on things. Will always be our place when entering or leaving CR. Thanks everyone who made the start of this years adventure in CR such a pleasure.

If you want a five star resort this place is not for you. If you are looking for a peaceful authentic spot to stay in Costa Rica then by all means stay at Pura Vida. We loved everything about PV. Berni is comical. The food was excellent. Great place for seeing orchids, fauna, and birds. Can be a tad noisy at night but not unusually in Costa Rica. Pura Vida was Pura Vida.
