Asclepios (honoring the Greek God of Health) is located in Alajuela, Costa Rica and offers its guests 12 rooms which evoke the most important medical traditions of the world, together with a regulated ionized swimming pool, amphitheatre, fitness center, exercise pavilion, sauna, hammam, nature paths, 6 treatment lodges, a relaxation room and a Conference room.We are located on the edge of a tropical forest with views of the surrounding sugar cane and coffee plantations, mountains and volcanoes. We work with a team of selected holistic practitioners and highly skilled spa therapists. We have put together a great understanding and passion for physical, emotional and spiritual health resulting in great wellbeing.Asclepios also seeks to educate in environmental appreciation and conservation. It is built in siding and brick, two sustainable materials. We use thermal solar collectors and take advantage of natural ventilation and natural lighting. Wild life has been preserved and our primary and secondary forests have been untouched. Our quest is to restore the person’s whole being to its natural state of balance, by correcting such diverse factors as improper diet, sedentary lifestyle, lack of a correct oxygenation, negative thought patterns and their emotional impact, and the lack of rest or restorative sleep, among others. We do this by five Special Wellness Programs that include Detoxification and Revitalization Programs, Stress and Weight Management and the Spa Experience Program.A la carte: Naturopathy, Meditation, Pranayamas, Acupuntura, Floral Therapy, Vichy and Scottish Showers; Kneipp, Shiatsu, Shirodhara, Yoga, Reiki, Tai chi…And, as health also includes your palate: bioenergetic gastronomy, where you can rediscover the original flavors of vegetables, fruits and fish.

This wellness Spa is just that, a place to get away from it all. If you need internet and wi-fi 24/7 because you just cannot let it go or you have to keep a communication line with work, then this is not the place for you. Yes, the internet is pretty much non-existent in the rooms but for me it was such a detox moment to be able to have 2 days and nights without constantly looking at that darn screen. Mind you, I would check when I was by the pool or the main area/restaurant but it was good enough for me. Pluses: the silence, the massage wow!, the pool, the room, loved the soaps and shampoos they have there. And while due to Covid right now they have some rooms closed off, and there's less staff, it didn't bother me at all. The restaurant is also more limited right now again due to Covid, but we tried every option of main entrees and desserts and none disappointed. Negatives: the glass door to the shower needs serious maintenance (it kept getting stuck). My room was Aphrodite! Loved it really and only had. that issue. All the other rooms seem just as lovely. If you are traveling from out of town/country, its a short 15 min ride to Alajuela downtown. Plenty of everything there...restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, etc etc etc.

So, everything negative you read in reviews is true. This place lacks serious hospitality management, in a country where tourism is the majority of its income. The front desk did their best to accommodate, but it was clear that the rest were not managed or trained . Breakfast, as stated in other reviews, was minimal. The waitress completely messed up my coffee request, which took too long, and eventually brought me curdled milk for it. I later saw her cleaning my room, which explained a lot, but she didn’t do that very well either. The food at dinner was okay, but not as described on the menu, and the vegetables were overcooked and not fresh. I had a lot of trouble getting hot water in my shower on several occasions. The jacuzzi was fine since I asked well ahead to have it turned on. Yes, the pool was ice cold, but I liked that in the heat. The place was nearly empty, which I found very nice, but I can’t imagine how the staff could handle any more guests. Attention to detail is NOT a strength . Some reviewers ask why there are so few guests here; it’s pretty obvious that, while the place is beautiful and the rooms are nicely done, the service is hopeless. It is not cheap, but you are paying for the grounds and the rooms, and that’s it.

I wanted to share the highlights of my stay. Juan did a fabulous job of making sure my needs were met from arranging driver pick up times, scheduling massages, opening the yoga room and offering amenities to enhance my stay. He is new to the retreat and is a true asset. Gaby and Carol work in the kitchen and dining areas. They went out of their way to prepare delicious and nutritious meals while working around my dental issues. They care deeply about providing the best service and are very personable. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the retreat is enviro-friendly. The grounds are gorgeous and lush and the view of the coffee plantation is beautiful. I highly recommend spending time here to heal, reconnect or rest. You will be well taken care of :-)

Had some pretty major oral surgery at Dental Cosmetics in Alejuela (also excellent) and stayed here at Asclepios to rest and recuperate. I’ve been so blown away by the beauty of the hotel and grounds but mostly by the people who work here - Juan, Carol, Gabby, Marlene, David, Pablo, Raulio, Carol’s mom, Lucia, Sonia...everyone has been so accommodating, going out of their way every day to make sure we had what we needed. The food is clean and organic. Carol and the kitchen staff prepared all of our special requests (lots of soft food) with open-hearted smiles. I never felt like I was being a bother. Everything was really tasty. Both Lucia and Sonia were EXCELLENT (body wrap and massages). They are healers, not just massage therapists. The facilities are lovely - pools, steam room, jacuzzi, exercise room, etc. Also, a yoga room and a “relaxation suite.” They’ve really thought of everything. Asclepios would be a fantastic venue for a healing retreat - it’s small and easy to access from the San Jose airport. (There is a WiFi lounge in case you need it.) This place has felt like home (only better) and the people feel like family. I’m so grateful that the dental clinic hooked me up! 👍👍 Two thumbs up! Loved it. 💕

Juan welcomed us for our wellness stay after dental surgery. Juan was so very attentive and caring, animated and most of all....genuine! His pride in his job and his pride for the Asclepios Wellness Retreat was immediately apparent. We stayed nine days and Juan was always at the ready to answer our questions and make our stay most comfortable, accompanied by his beaming smile. Gaby and Carol cared for us in the dining room and comforted us with excellent food. We arrived as guests, we left as friends!!!

The grounds are beautiful with a breathtaking view of the mountains. A small resort means cozy, quiet and peaceful for anyone who wants to get away from it all and reenergize yourself. The food is all fresh and healthy options only. That can be a little limiting for a few but goes in hand with the philosophy of the resort.

We stayed in Asclepios at 2 different occasions at the beginning of October. Place is an absolute gem! Wonderfully decorated, huge rooms, with a fantastic and beautiful view over the mountains and Coffee estate. Staff is extremely efficient, friendly, helpful and they will do everything possible to make your stay even nicer. Restaurant serves good food and great wine.

My friend and I stayed with Asclepios for one night and felt that it was sufficient enough for our experience. The rooms were extremely spacious and the rounds were beautiful but specific wellness retreat qualities were lacking. The retreat was very quiet and peaceful and only two other couples were staying during the time of our stay, Unfortunately there are no programs or schedule for wellness during the day (yoga etc) and anything of this kind comes at an additional cost and must be booked at least a day in advance. It was disappointing to think we would be able to have access to many of the amenities on the grounds like the steam room outside but again - additional cost and must be booked. The pool was quite cold so we could not swim reardless of the heat. The dinner was well prepared but breakfast was a huge disappointment. Some small pieces of fruit, granola, and a piece of very dry handmade toast. You cannot order eggs etc so we ended up checking out extremely hungry. Again beautiful ambiance if you are looking to get away to experience the quieter side of costa rica, but you may be able to get more value somewhere closer to the city.

I have very recently stayed here (August 2018) for three nights and must say I really enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed my 3.5-week stay in beautiful Costa Rica. My room was spacious and clean, called 'Indra', had a nice bathroom and a breathtaking view - garden, volcano and coffee plantation - amazing. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food here is exquisite and made with love - delicious, fresh and full of flavour. I love the fact that the staff handpicks the herbs in the hotel's gardens. This is a very private and personal place where both singles and couples are treated very adequately. There are 12 unique rooms. I came here to relax and 'find myself', which is exactly what this place is for. The only place you can use wifi is on the guest terrace opposite the beautiful pool, which I find a very good idea. The spa is a very peaceful place and I enjoyed my facial as well as the relaxing massage I was given before leaving for the airport. I can only highly recommend this place and I do think it is worth every dollar/colon! Cannot wait to be back. Gracias por todo!
