I've stayed at Alajuela Backpackers twice. Both times was the night before my flight back home. The front desk staff are kind and considerate. The place is clean, tidy & comfortable. They have a free shuttle service to the airport with lots of options for times. The intimate rooftop bar is the best view! most of all, loved the disrupted... More

My husband and I had a 7:45 a.m. flight to catch at Juan Santamaria Airport just outside of San Jose, Costa Rica, and Alajuela Backpackers worked fine for this. We had made reservations online, very easily, a few days before. We got a private room with en suite bathroom. When we checked in, we signed up for the free shuttle... More

Decently priced hostel, convenient location - good for travellers coming/going to airport. The bus (~1 USD) stops right beside the hostel. Note - 535 colones to get to alajuela or San Jose on this bus. Taxi drivers will tell you there ARENT any busses to downtown alajuela but there are. Catch the bus on the main road right in front... Our stay at Alajuela Backpackers was the worst we have ever had. The service from the employees is horrible - they speak bad English, can't help you with any questions you might have, and are unfriendly and rude. The AC doesn't work, you have to pay extra for the towels, the airport shuttle is only at certain hours in the... More

The hostel itself was very clean and has a lovely rooftop bar which overlooked part of the town. The rooms were also very plain but very clean and felt comfortable sleeping there. I would only really stay here for one night, probably the first or last night of my travels because it just didn't have too much to offer but... More

Stayed Aug 2016. Avoid this Hostel at all cost. The management photos are of the previous hotel at this location and do not represent what you get. The facilities were filthy, uncleaned, and level 3 bio hazard. The staff didn't even try to provide service. Online reservations were not received or just not honored. Floors in rooms had dust bunnies... More

Didn't reserve befoo, got there and it was more expensive that I had seen online, but paid $17 for a 4 person dorm. Small room with its own bathroom, had air-conditioning and free shuttle to airport. Very close to airport, good place for one night. Apparently if you book your first and last night here, they give you a discount.... More

Pros: picked us up from airport as promised (was a little confused as two different people gave us rides), arrived late so was very happy to have a simple dinner at roof top patio, clean room, AC, hot shower (let it run for while first) Cons: our tour group would not pick us up from this location so we had... Fine if your 17 and happy to rough it. It wasn't clean and has seen better days. There are many other choices to stay for a similar price which are much better. The whole place needs an overhaul and a decent clean.

I was a little disappointed from this hostel compare to other ones of the same company. The beds are really uncomfortable very cheap beds. There is no hot water in shower and AC is set to a temp and only work from 7 pm to 7 am so you'll not want to stay during the day in the room. On... More
